We know, movie tie-ins for Nintendo consoles don't normally get the pulse racing. Yet based on the number of them that grace the big N's hardware they're evidently popular, and we must say that Cars 3: Driven to Win might turn out rather well.
That's not necessarily a surprise, as Avalanche Studios has produced it - that team previously delivered the rather impressive Disney Infinity before the toys-to-life series got cancelled. Now an updated gameplay trailer shows off this Cars 3 game; it's coming to both Switch and Wii U alongside other systems, though the Wii U version won't have the 4-player co-op mode that's briefly showcased.
There's also been a press release with some details.
6 Thrilling Game Modes:
- Race: Players can hop onto the tracks and race against Lightning McQueen and the gang to rev up for the ultimate challenge.
- Stunt Showcase: Players can race off of ramps to catch air and perform as many tricks as possible before time runs out, earning points for successful tricks and safe landings.
- Best Lap Challenge: Players can race against their own best time, as they attempt to set a new track record.
- Playground: An area where players can go racing, perform stunts and engage in challenges, or simply drive around for fun at their own pace. There are no rules!
- Takedown: Collect and use a variety of power-ups to eliminate as many crash karts as possible, and when time runs out, the player with the most points wins.
- Battle Race: Players are able to collect and use power-ups, putting their cars to the test in races against family and friends to become the Ultimate Champion.4 Master-Level Events, versus Mater the Greater, Miss Fritter, Chick Hicks & Jackson Storm.
It looks like it could be a fun game, especially for younger gamers - even us older gamers have licensed games in our retro collections that, really, are only there because of the brand. By those standards Cars 3 seems to have potential.
Do you think this one is looking good?

Wii U version .
Can't wait to pick it up! Loved the Cars 2 game and I'm glad to see the same framework being used again for new tracks and modes.
This is about as close to Twisted Metal as you get on Nintendo I guess.
Does it have online gameplay?
Meh...would have preferred a regular oval track with the characters in it. Then again I like to watch Nascar...I'm boring like that.
Actually, it doesn't look too bad. It's not going to outshine Mario Kart any time soon but this has the look of a decent kart racer.
That doesn't surprise me! The original Cars was one of my favorite early Wii games. They are fun cartoon racers, what's not to love?
Thinkin it reminds me of excite truck or excite bots on the wii!?
This... looks surprisingly decent. Most definitely not a game I'll be getting, but you can colour me surprised. Wonder how it'll fare in the reviews.
Once my 3 year old gets a glimpse of this, it's all I'm going to hear about. Might as well preorder it now.
Wait, the Wii U version is missing features?!
Initial D(isney-Pixar).
I think the Wii U version could outsell the Switch version based on install base (about 10 million more) and Switch just got MK8D.
Every mode in the game the cars looked a little slow to me, even if they had boosters on. Could just be me, or it could be they slowed the game down for kids. I know I hated driving all of the vehicles in Disney Infinity so maybe they just took it slow here?
Looks actually decent. The older Cars games were a good time on the PS3 from what I remember, will definitely pick this up when price comes down. Seems like a perfect black Friday purchase.
@rjejr
The same thing could'vebeen said with Zelda, but it didn't. Switch version outsold the Wii U version by more than double despite the Wii U having a larger base. That just shows the Wii U is even more of a failure.
@RainbowGazelle Only missing 4 player split screen. Just like the ps3 version
Isn't "decent" just a nicer way to say "mediocre"?
@KoopaTheGamer But give it to a 5 to 9 year old and they are going to think it's the greatest thing ever. Games like this arent aimed at older kids/adults
@Moms-Meowth Yeah, I know. However, that isn't an excuse to make a mediocre game. There are games suited for children that are actually good. I'm sure the developers could have made Cars 3 into something special.
Then again, I haven't played this game. Maybe it's actually good.
Which platform is the game running on in that footage? I have to agree that it does look surprisingly good. If it wasn't branded as Disney's Cars I would perhaps like it more. It might be worth picking up from a bargain bin a couple years down the line for some multiplayer fun, but I certainly will not be buying this brand new.
Why is 4 player co-op not available on the WII u version?
@Nintendoforlife They probably couldn't optimise it well enough for the Wii U and PS3.
Meh. Also, why is this trailer not a 60FPS? Does that mean the game only runs at 30?
@MrGamerClock64 @Hikingguy Zelda was the reason, and really only reason, to buy a Switch, so of course everyone who bought a Switch bought Zelda, so that meant more sales on Switch than on Wii U.
But Zelda is Zelda, a game you buy a system for, Cars 3 is a licensed game marketed mostly at kids. Kids don't buy new consoles at launch, they get games like this on older systems.
Just Dance 2017 sold better on Wii than Wii U for example. And on any other console as well.

Cars 3 comes out next month, 3 days before ARMS, people will still be playing MK8D on Switch and buying ARMS. What else will be on sale on Wii U besides Cars 3? This seems like a good game for parents to pick up for kids on the Wii U they have. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 is the highest selling version.
@KoopaTheGamer I played Cars 2 on the 360 and it's not actually bad at all to be fair.
@David_Dudeney The graphics don't look all that intensive, and really not that different from Cars 2. If Mario Kart 8 could run on the Wii u I doubt they couldn't get this running on it properly.
It reminds me of Excite Truck in a way. And that could be a good thing.
@Hikingguy "for the Wii over the PS3"
I have no idea why anybody would do that. Though I did buy Skylanders Superchargers on Wii b/c it had a free download on Wii U so my kid could play in his room on Wii while my other kid played on Wii U in the basement, and we also brought it to my parents to play on their Wii. So I'm sure you had a reason. Price is as good a reason as any.
maybee a on sale buy down the line. But its going against MK8D is a tough sell
Who does the school bus bring to school if there are no humans in this universe?
@Spoony_Tech well, Vigilante 8 games should map pretty close to it as well, and they came out on Nintendo platforms before.
@Aurumonado Asking the important questions
@nhSnork Ahh, nostalgia
@Hikingguy hey man, I don't know if it was recent or not but regardless, I'm so sorry for your loss
@nhSnork Did it, I don't remember? It was so long ago and now that I think about it, it was on the N64 wasn't it. Still we are talking what 15 years ago?
@Spoony_Tech N64 and even Gameboy Color, yes. And game age is of little concern to me, but it was even more than 15 years ago. 15 years ago is actually when I got a Sega Mega Drive. XD
@Nintendoforlife I don't think it's a matter of whether or not they could, but whether they would. They probably have time restraints that make mean that less time can be spent on optimisation.
@Hikingguy I'm a Father of two myself, my son turned six in April & my daughter is 8. When I read your comment my stomach lurched, I felt like I could cry for you, and anyone who has lost a child. I cannot imagine your pain. We love Nintendo too, Wii U & 2DS have brought us so much joy, my son is mad to get a Switch but... maybe a little bit closer to Christmas lol. I'm a hardcore MJ fan but my kids are mad about him too, especially Earth Song & Heal the World, & I haven't forced that on them which probably most people assume. You take care man, there will always be tears but I truly hope memories of your time with him will bring joy & a smile to your face too.
It's 2017 and companies are still churning out games with graphics like this on modern games consoles? Jeez...
@Hikingguy very good advice, thank you, and I do genuinely tell my kids every day without fail I love them, and my wife, it's very simple but very important. Take care pal.
I'm sensing a bit of a Vigilante 8 vibe here. . .lol - Jolted me when the character said "Crazy 8!"
Glad Avalanche came back to bring us some quality licensed games
Looks like a fun time, will get it on Switch!
@Anti-Matter TAKUMIIIIIII!!!!!
@Moms-Meowth Exactly! My son is 5 and he loves CARS and his Wii U and his most played games are MK8 and Sonic Racing Transformed, so he is absolutely getting this for his Birthday. He will no doubt be bursting with happiness playing it for weeks on end, so whoever took the decision to bring this out on Wii U has made at least me and my boy happy.
It might just not be to everyone's liking, but there is definitely an audience for games like this.
The first two Cars games actually were surprisingly decent games. I'd buy this if the price is right some day.
@skwiddly Funny. I thought the same thing. All those balloons in the air. The ramp and pop mechanic is straight from Excitebots.
@hikingguy first time posting here in years but I wanted to also express my condolences! My heart breaks reading your story. I'm a father of 2 boys, eldest is only 3 and a half and I simply can't imagine what your family has been through! I can tell you that my son absolutely LOVES Zelda BOTW, so can empathise with you that you didn't get to share the joy of that game with your son. Sounds like you are an incredible father so keep on keeping on and look after that daughter of yours, my heart goes out to you 💚
@AlexOlney and this, folks, is what happens when you're deprived of consistent 3rd party support.
@Hikingguy I wouldn't mind taking a look at your sons story, if you wouldn't mind posting the link again?
Well at least this trailer looked a bit better, where the graphics weren't a blurry mess.
Now it actually looked like a decent game, but it all depends on how smooth the driving controls are. As driving controls can literally make or brake this game!
But maybe this trailer is the PS4/XBOne version and we get served the NBA playgrounds treatment with this game on the Switch, with downgraded graphics ( read quick lazy port ).
@Hikingguy I'd love to read his story actually, it means a lot you're open to sharing it with others.
@Hikingguy that was an incredible read, thank you for sharing. You and your family are unbelievable, and your son... I have no words to do little Derek justice. I'm so happy you have your Faith, and that you were blessed by the love and prayers of so many incredible people throughout your journey. I wish you all peace and love, look after each other, take care.
I try not to be a graphics fanboy, but jeez. That looks like an upscaled Wii game or something.
