Today's Nintendo Direct presentation included plenty of details, including the release date of Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition.
Releasing digitally on 11th May, a physical version will be released at a later date.

The game will include an exclusive Nintendo texture-pack which was included in the Wii U version of the game, where you'll be able to explore a blocky version of the infamous Mushroom Kingdom with you and your friends.
Nintendo also promised that various play controls and new multiplayer options would be available, which include eight players online or four players locally through various Switch setups.
Will you be picking up Minecraft for the Nintendo Switch?

Another Wii U port. Which in turn is a port of a port.
I've looked at this as an interesting creative toolkit from the start, but never found the platforms appealing.
Might be another port (of a port) but if the price is right, a Switch version would finally sell it to me.
Hey. I'm all for Minecraft on the Switch but if Wii U players don't get a discount then it's a pass for me.
So I've been playing the Xbox One version of minecraft a lot recently... and from watching footage of the switch version, I can already tell that the switch version is watered down. The worlds don't look as big, when I play the Xbox One version, I can see a lot in the distance and the mountains can get massive. I hope I am wrong, and they opted to make smaller terrains in that gameplay. But still, other than that, the graphics look more blurry.
If the switch version is same as Wii U version, I will be very disappointed... the map size in the Wii U version is only one map size! Too tiny.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Every Minecraft port is a port of a port of a Beta release.
Ill still buy it. The Android version controls poorly for me.
@Equinox Yep, I've played it
@Equinox We still don't know how much manufacturing costs are for the Switch carts so that might've been a deterrent. I believe the Wii U and some other platforms (Vita) were the same way as well with their releases.
I'll pass since I have the PC version.
Didn't take long for Microsoft to get on board the Switch.
Yes, it's an old game, and this is probably a port of the last Gen Wii U version, not the PS4 and X2 version, but that home console portability is a huge plus.
While watching the ND my kids and I agreed that like Netflix, having Mine craft won't sell a lot of Switch, but it's better to have it than not have it. And this is a lot sooner than I expected.
I haven't had much interest in getting Minecraft on consoles, PC has always been enough. The Switch, however, might tempt me. It's not the first portable Minecraft but the combination of home and handheld gaming is making the Switch more and more of the go to platform for multiplats like this.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
So WHAT with the ports ?!
Are you keep expecting EXCLUSIVE ONLY WII U games and HATE every single games that ported into Switch or other Nintendo machines ?!
Wake Up ! It still from Nintendo family !
Geez...
MS is like: "We love Nintendo!!!! It prints money for us too!"
@Equinox I think the Switch version looks better. But maybe today it's too early to give a final verdict on it.
if it retains the wii u's tiny world sizes ill have to pass
Hopefully Wii U owners can get a discount on this like the other platforms.
When I played Minecraft on the Xbox I completely zoned out to the point where I get home from work and start playing building my world and by the time I set the game down, is the next day and I have to be at work in an hour. How bad will I get once I'm able to pick up the game and take it with me.
If they offer a discount for Wii u owners then I might. Otherwise probably not
This will be the definitive console version of the game.
See, when Wii U never got Minecraft year after year, people were saying how that really contributed to the lack of appeal of the console. Remember people saying if it had got the game it's first year it could've helped drive interest.
Well, here we are, 2 months after launch and Minecraft will be on Switch. That's a good thing.
And really, being able to play the home console version of the game on a nice big Switch screen in high definition is the best way to play on the go. Having one save file between TV and on the go with instant switching between is really what's needed to incentivize me to play games like this both on the go and at home
Annoyed by the delayed retail release (again?!), but I'm keen on grabbing it when it arrives. I've given this and Story Mode a pass on Wii U in anticipation of this. Here's hoping that they will be budget-priced releases, just as they were on Wii U (~AU$40).
How much though??
Not exactly a massive fan, although I did play my fair share way back when, but this is really good news.
Anyone else here feel line Nintendo should get a Zelda BOTW mash up pack for minecraft wii u and switch? If there is any game perfectly fitted for a Minecraft than BOTW ill eat my hat
But how will voice chat work if the app isn't released? Will you have to buy those Zelda earbuds with a mic?
I'm on board right now! I am so happy that it is this quickly happening!
Weird coincidence: That is the day of my final project showcase!
@zeth Probably more than every other platform. Even digitally because they force the extra texture pack in
I wonder if it's still a port of the "small" console version, or if it will be a port of the "big" console version.
Will be getting for Switch because I don't see why not. Have it for Wii-U, PC (Windows 10 and Java version), Nvida Shield, Kindle Fire, so it will be a nice addition. Just sad that it comes on Eshop first, AGAIN!
@Menchi187 @zeth It will cost $29.99
http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/minecraft-switch-edition
@nobboysbro What a joke for $30/€30. Expected as much, was not disappointed.
@Menchi187 Xbox 360 Edition was $29.99 but lowered to $19.99, Xbox One Edition is $29.99, Ps3 was $29.99 but lowered to $19.99, Ps4 Edition is $29.99, and Wii-U edition is $29.99, so the same as every other console at launch besides PC which stays at $24.99 and Pocket which is $7.99.
@nobboysbro Pretty sure Minecraft was never that expensive on anything that wasn't a Nintendo platform. Can't 100% remember though since it has been many years since I bought them, unlike Nintendo which came way too late to the party for it.
@Menchi187 Just checked on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One store, and it is indeed $29.99. And I remember paying $29.99 for it on the Xbox 360.
Even though it's been out for years, Minecraft is still very popular. Having a version on the Switch is a good thing.
@nobboysbro The favourites pack is €30. Which isn't the same thing and is only about a year old. Minecraft is only €18.99 (looking at xbox) which fits close to what I remember paying for it on day 1, or at least the conversion because it was still microsoft points back then.
Portable minecraft ho!!!!
@Menchi187 360 or One?
If it's a good price then i will pick it up again. If not then my kids can keep playing the wii u version.
@nobboysbro It's €18.99 for the base game on either platform right now. Was 2100 MS points (about €21/23) on day of launch on Xbox 360
I don't suppose Wii U players would get a discount on the Switch version (not betting on it, but it'd be nice).
i guess this is switch's big may release then?! cause there's nothing else.
Good grief, I had no idea the console edition had limited world sizes. Even the larger 5120x5120 block size the PS4 and XBOX One versions have doesn't sound big enough to me, let alone 864x864... That's a deal breaker for me, I'll just stick to the PC version.
@manu0 Street Fighter 2 and Disgaea 5 would love to have a word with you.
Also, please don't be just one map like the WiiU version was. Please be like the PS4/Xbox One version with a world of 36 maps!
@LuckyPower Plan on it costing $29.99 just like the Wii U version. But like the Wii U version you do get quite a few skins and level packs for your money.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE you've now hit rock bottom with your moaning, did'nt see xbox players saying ''oh god a pc port on our console''.
@123akis Exactly, the Switch version hopefully is on par with the Xbox One version. I'll likely pick it up regardless as console quality Minecraft on the go is pretty appealing to me.
I've never played Minecraft. Being able to play on Switch might push me over the edge to actually try it.
@Menchi187 Went to Best Buy to get an Eshop card, and just saw Minecraft for Wii U, Ps4, and Xbox One each for $29.99 so I don't know, could be region differences or something I guess.
@BrizzoUK Wow, just get it, it doesn't seem like much at first until you start playing it. Then you get addicted. It's especially fun with friends and I would highly recommend it.
@chiefeagle02 Are Wii-U owners getting a discount on Just Dance 2017, Lego City Undercover, Mario Kart 8, Skylanders, World of Goo, Little Inferno? Nope. So don't count on it. At all. The only discount Minecraft has ever gave was giving MC Win 10 for free to MC Java users. I have had to buy this game many many times, so I think not.
@nobboysbro Thanks, I think I will. I was away from gaming when it hit initially and never hugely appealed, yet I just love playing games portably on Switch and to me this game appeals to me as a portable one.
@3dsgeek333 Nintendo has talked about voice chatting using a free Nintendo-made app during the Switch Presentation, but nothing else has been said about it.
I'm really excited about this game. I will however, be disappointed if the game is just the Wii U version. The Switch has more than enough RAM to enable bigger worlds.
@gardevoir7 Why should you get discount? i did not got discount on all my Ps1,2 and 3 games. Also i did not get any on my Xbox, Xbox 360, N64 and gamecube games.
If this makes the Switch sell better, OK.
Still never played Minecraft. This portable version may well be the one to drag me in, especially with Wario!
@BezBot To be fair, when Minecraft came out on PS4 and XBox One, Microsoft offered a temporary discount for previous generation owners. However, I understand the company is not obligated to offer a similar deal to Nintendo gamers.
I've only ever played the iPad version with touch controls. My little one likes it a lot....
....so with a decent price point this is a purchase for me. I love the idea of having it on a nice tv then fiddling with it using good controls on the go.
My interest in this title is building
@JaxonH after all the waiting, Minecraft only got released on WiiU after Microsoft bought out Mojang. So I'm wondering if Microsoft were behind it being released on WiiU in the first place.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Which in turn is a port of ANOTHER port. The game's been ported so many times.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I feel like everyone is misunderstanding this comment. I'm finding it humorous either way!
This better have an expanded world compared to WiiU or I will skip. Though portable minecraft with better controls is very enticing.
@BezBot Yes, but that app won't be out until the fall from what we've heard.
If it's not as good as the PS4 version (bigger worlds, more udates and features) then I'll pass, I will not touch the last gen version (Wii U/PS3/XB360/Vita etc) as the worlds and features are tiny in comparison to PS4/XB1.
What's the world size? :/ If it's identical to Wii U this would be a ridiculous thing to buy.
I skipped the Wii U version but have bought it multiple times in the past (PS3, PS4, Vita). Since my Vita has gone belly up I've been missing that portable Minecraft fix...so yes...day 1 digital pick up for me. Only problem is I'll probably need yet another controller (already have 2 sets of joycons) to play this 3 player local with my daughters (they love Minecraft). Unless theres some bizarre single joycon kind of control option. lol (Maybe motion camera for looking around?)
Good news for Switch, glad to see Nintendo's new system taking off.
I think people shouldn't be so offended by the Switch version being based off/ported from the last gen. The Switch is 2x the power of Wii U so it's probably easier for the already stretched developers to keep it in alignment for now. There's no way the Xbox One/ps4 edition could be ported intact.
There is nothing wrong with the last gen editions either, the Wii U technically could've supported larger world's than the PS3/360 versions too along with a touch screen inventory but that never happened...Don't forget Switch is a portable first and foremost.
Hurrah, another port!
@123akis The worlds are bigger than Wii U worlds but smaller than Xbox One and PS4 worlds. This is probably so it still runs smoothly in handheld mode.
