We've seen many revisions of the Game Boy hardware over the years, but the Visteon Dockable Entertainment System has to rank as one of the most obscure. Produced in 2006 under licence from Nintendo, this portable DVD player was designed to make those long car trips a little more enjoyable, but had the added bonus of playing Game Boy Advance cartridges. It even came with its own (rather odd-looking) joypad.
The system has faded into obscurity over the years and is now very rare, but those resourceful chaps over at My Life in Gaming have gotten their hands on one and have been putting it through its paces to see if it's worth seeking out should you be looking for the best way to play GBA games.

To cut a long story short, it's probably not worth the effort - but this nevertheless remains a fascinating off-shoot of the Game Boy line, and by far and away the largest portable version of the system.

I'd never heard of this thing before today. It was $1,300???!!! No wonder it's so rare.
I actually remember Nintendo Power advertising this, and I had always wanted one after looking at the ad.
...Of course I never got it. It is a shame because I thought it would be cool using a DVD player as a GBA w/ controller
Fantastic for wannabe Nintendo collectors.
Nice throwback! Completely forgot about this.
I have never heard of this before. Cool, but very expensive!
Never heard of it. thought this article was gonna be some fan custom thing. a real licensed product? whoa!
Wait. . . . I didn't realise this was some official product you'd been randomly posting about over the last few weeks/months (or however long it's been).
Note: This is the same thing you've been posting shots and stuff of on Twitter recently, right?
thanks for this, nlife. i luv watching these gaming channels. this is a new one to follow!
Never heard of it but pretty cool
How is this news? This was talked about many, many years ago.
Cool article, I had never heard of one before I think I'm gonna go find one to buy..
@NTELLIGENTMAN
It's news because some weren't around years and years ago. So it's news to them.
Hey I knew about this. Not that I ever had one though.
I had heard about this before but had completely forgot about it. It reminds me of the Dreamcast that has a monitor attached and the X-Eye Gen/SegaCD player.
The Mario on the thumbnail is so creepy, something is very off with him.
This reminds me of the Amstrad Mega PC which could play Mega Drive games. But I love these oddities.
I have a complete unit with dock and headphones if anyone is interested
