The former Wii U exclusive Lego City Undercover now has a release date for its Nintendo Switch debut: 4th April 2017. The trailer below is via the Kotaku channel.
The updated version also brings with it a couple of new additions, most notably the ability to play the whole game cooperatively with a friend. The trailer shows off a few seconds of split-screen gameplay, but fails to mention whether this can be done online too; we'd bet it's local only.
As well as teaming up with a buddy, the new footage highlights a couple of new costumes for Chase McCain to model as he fights crime throughout Lego City, and the Nintendo page for this updated edition confirms the return of the Nintendo cameos found in the original release.
The original 2013 title released to much critical praise, and this updated version gives future Switch owners another title to look forward to within the console's launch window. It joins Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as the second retail game with a solid release date in April.

Will take a crack at this for sure. Co-op is a nice addition.
Hmm...i've also seen a trailer with April 7th at the end, so is that for a different region, or other systems or what?
Presumably this is the same time the PS4/One ports are coming out?
Not double dipping unless I some load screens. Because if they are forever long again then I won't even bother...
2 player is nice, but $60 is insane, it's a 4 year old port that is currently available on Wii U for MSRP $20. Should have been $40.

Fun game... completed it on Wii U ages ago... don't really see any reason for me to get it again though.
This game was pure joy from start to finish. I doubt I'd play it again, but I'll certainly pick it up so my kids (who were a bit too young for the Wii U version) can play the co-op mode.
I'll buy it again when it's cheaper. Can't justify spending €120 on one game. Its release date is 4th April by the way.
I'm totally done with LEGO games. I had a good time with the Star Wars ones like 10 years ago, but I have no desire to ever play one again.
U know, this is the one game that has had the most play on my wii u, both myself & my daughter have hammered it!
Is it another buy? I'm not so sure?
When i heard about a re-release on PS4 i thought yes definitely as it'll run better/smoother on that machine.
If it ends up improved on Switch, then I'll go for that👍
As much as I really enjoyed this 1st time around, I won't be picking it up again! I've put 80 odd hours into it, that's me done with Lego city
Will play it again later one 😁 One of my favourite Lego games behind Batman 2 and Dimensions.
Hope we'll get a sequel eventually
Puyo Puyo Tetris is a retail game with a solid release date in April
I'm actually in the middle of my first play-through on the Wii U right now. I took advantage of that $20 price tag. I will not buy it again on Switch.
Lack of co-op was THE REASON I never bought it on the Wii U. Now that it has co-op I just might buy it on Switch
One of the best game available on Wii U. I don't think I'll double dip but those who haven't played it should definitely go for it!
Awesome I'll definitely get it again.
Since people are telling me that this a good Lego game, I guess I'll try this out when I do get the Switch. Is there a price on it yet? Because I was planning on getting Tetris as well. (which is $30)
Looking forward to it! Especially because i didn't play it on Wii U (i have to admit on purpose, to play it on Switch because i read of huge loading times on Wii U)
Nope played the hell out of this on WiiU and this is just cashing in on an old game. The dual player mode and a few new Lego costumes doesn't justify purchasing this again. Even though I've sold my WiiU and all the games.
I'm so glad they're re-releasing this. It didn't get the love it deserved on the Wii U, so hoping its success on other platforms will warrant a sequel. I REALLY want it to get a sequel.
Why is no one asking if the prequel 3ds game is worked into this new updated version? Any word on this? If it is I'll buy day one as I never played the prequel.
@readyletsgo I've been wondering this too, as I never got around to picking it up. To be honest that was largely because I heard it wasn't as good as the main title, which I can believe as the portable Lego titles I've played perform poorly compared to their home console counterparts (though Shadow of ronin is decent). Another thing I'm wondering is if the Dlc mission you got from inputting the code on a Lego city model is present here too, presumably unlocked through in-game play as the actual Lego set is no longer available. Anyone know the answer to this?
What? Co-op? This is my favorite Lego game, but I was always upset this feature was left out. There goes another game I'll buy again.
I always wanted to try this, but ended up never getting it for one reason or another...I'll definitely pick this up on Switch, although I might wait for a price drop first - £44.99 is a little too much for a port of a game that's almost 4 years old.
@rjejr I was waiting for a price on it, but I knew deep down they'd be charging full price for a four-year-old port. This is Nintendo: it still wants me to pay $40 for Star Fox 64 3D, a six-year-old port of a 20-year-old game.
Guess I'll be downloading it for my Wii U then.
I played it on WiiU and liked it. I'm not big into the lego games, but this was done really well. The load times were beyond awful though.
Charging 59.99 is ridiculous. I wouldn't encourage companies to charge full price for old games.
@JohnnyC I've heard the 3ds game is pretty good, just the long load times all the time killed it for people I guess.
I enjoyed the Wii u version but the title screen took so long to load it put me off getting to far in.
Wii U 2.0
hopefully this version drops in price soon as i already got the wii u version when it dropped to $20. not worth full price but it's fun and i'd maybe drop $30 on it since it has co-op
Not worth the double dip for me.. It's a fun game but didn't play it enough to even consider a second purchase..
Will get this if the load times are gone (or at least significantly reduced)
I never got round to purchasing this on Wii. U so will definitely get involved this time
@bezerker99 it can't even be called Wii U 2.0. Wii U at least had a browser and streaming apps on day 1.
Never played it on the wii u so will pick this one up
Great game but I'll leave it on the Wii u for the kids to play.
I will definitely pick this up again when it's cheaper! So so fun.
@burninmylight "This is Nintendo"
If this was only on Switch I'd be less surprised, but on PS4 it looks a little expensive. I suppose PS4 owners are used to all of those ports of PS3 games though, Skyrim Remastered was $60 too. 4 months later and even that's selling for $35, this will be $20 or $30 by Christmas.
You don't have to put effort into creating games if you just re-release games you've already made.jpg
@leo13 Same reason I didn't buy it. You can't have a LEGO game without co-op! I will be getting this for sure now.
Speaking of LEGO games, I will sure miss how all the Wii U ones let you use the GamePad as a separate screen. It made it much easier compared to the split screen.
I bought it day one on WiiU. I did my part. I'll be looking forward to new games on the switch. Injustice 2 please with access to all dlc?
2 PLAYER?! My life is complete. Day one buy.
@rjejr It is pretty crazy. And this doesn't look like a case of bias towards one console either. Even the PS4 and Xbox One versions cost this much.
Maybe Time Warner is trying to milk as much profit as possible from the popularity of the LEGO movies?
Co-op!
I'll buy it again just for the GameStop preorder
I'm totally getting this! and Sofa co-opping with my lady!
Is it eshop only or do we get retail?
Co-op is a very welcome update. The only other concern I have are the load times, which I would assume are almost non-existent compared to the minute long waits between the overworld and the bounded levels.
I still have my Wii U version and will likely hold onto it, but I do plan to double dip on this title in the near future as it is one of my all time favorite LEGO games. I even have the PRIMA strategy guide for this game so I could 100% unlock everything.
@rjejr The Wii U version is currently $320 for most people.
More seriously, I'm betting they never made their money back on the original. It was a serious departure from previous LEGO games and probably took a lot of engineering, especially since it targeted Wii U. It was the right game at the right time to step up the LEGO game franchise, it was just made for a platform that never grew a big user base.
From a consumer perspective most should wait until the price comes down, for sure. Publishers are quite predictable that way, but it does no good to the perception of value. The two reasons to lower the price are that a game isn't interesting enough to sell at a higher price (low demand) or a game already made its money back as a huge seller and it can sweep in a whole other round of income at half the price (high demand). The thing is, the game is the same game.
I've played some decades old games again lately. They are just as fun and valuable to me, just with less novelty. The value is still there. Without all the market pressures and discounting the value of sharing experience with peers, a good game should be just as fun 4 or 10 years later. Same value.
We are talking about game prices being cut in half in less than a year which is actually absurd to me and has the feel of a practice that is unsustainable.
As a consumer I can't play all the games I already own. I'm wising up and buying less. When it gets to a certain large number of gamers that have the realization that games will go half price later in the year or next, it will be time for another shift in marketing. It helps explain the digital games costing the same or more than physical. Publishers are looking for ways to squeeze out money from every preference of consumers: "I want it now", "I want it convenient", "I want it at low cost", "I want more", "I want an advantage over others", "I want customization", "I want memorabilia".
I'm not criticizing publishers for doing this either. Consumers demand bigger and bigger games but won't budge on how much they'll pay for it. DLC, micro-transactions, season passes are all about targeting different points in different gamers to get the return on investment.
I got off track, but I don't see "it's old" having any meaning whatsoever to the price that should be paid for this game in particular. It was an exclusive to a small platform and it has the look and production of just about any LEGO game old or new — and it's unique in the franchise to boot. Your mileage may (likely) vary.
I've played this and can say that it is truly a super fun game. The only bad thing about it was the abysmal loading times.
Hopefully they fixed or at least shortened the loading in this glorified port.
Also co-op? YEAHHHHH!
(I don't think I'll buy this though, maybe if the price got lowered)
Lucky I got it on Wii u. Kids enjoyed it. Can't justify buying again
Really enjoyed this game, not planning on paying full price for it again, though. The addition of co-op is a great idea, too... I wonder if it could just use one Joy-con per player? That would be nice, but I also remember fumbling with many buttons so not sure about that.
It's a good time to be a LEGO game with the LEGO Batman movie having so much success.
I never picked this up for my WiiU because of the lack of off-tv play. Now this won't be an issue. Will still probably wait for a sale, though.
I really hope they get a lot of new games out for the switch and slow down on Wii u ports for the switch.
Mario kart 8 deluxe
Lego city undercover
Smash 4 Delux
Mario maker Delux
Yoshi and poochi Delux
Captain toad treasure Delux
I have played the 3ds version and it's a quite good game. Never played the WiiU version, is the city layout the same as the 3ds version or are there different locations in this game?
Loved this onWiiU. Still have Dimensions to get through though, so my Lego fix is sated for.. as long as they see money to be made in expansions, I suppose. Might pick up Undercover for the Switch if it drops in price. I had more fun with that than Dimensions; I buy and sell the sets, but the cost overall is probably not worth it. I'm a sucker for nostalgia though, year 2 franchises too irresistible.
...sshhh...I think you blew their cover...
..missed em' the first time, so I'll probably grab some backup and check out the scene..
@Ernest_The_Crab Hadn't really thought about the movies popularity being a factor but it could be. There is also a Lego Dimensions play set of Chase and a helicopter and that will probably sell for $25 so I suppose this looks good for $60. Doesn't hurt anyone, except maybe the feelings of the people who buy it days before the inevitable price drop which will likely come quick. Sony dropped the price of their big years in the making PS4 exclusive The Last Guardian from $60 to $40 just months after release.
The co op part will make me buy this. I never got to play it on WiiU so its basically a new game for me.
Ummm isn't Tetris-Puyo Puyo also been confirmed for 28th of April? Same date as Mario Kart?
As long as its ported over perfectly, and hopefully with reduced load screens, I'm double dipping.
£44.99 [£42.99 Prime] on Amazon. PS4 and Xbox are both £50.
Local co-op is what sold it to me. This is the perfect game to play with my daughter.
@KirbyTheVampire This is the best Lego game of all, I'd recommend trying a demo if you can.
@aaronsullivan "it was just made for a platform that never grew a big user base."
I'm not sure I agree with this, for LCU or any Wii U game. How many copies do most Lego games sell? I know Lego Hobbit must have sold poorly due to them never releasing the part 3 DLC, but Lego Batman must have sold well, they made 2 sequels. But how many? Looks like the average for Lego games is about 5 million. Wii U sold over 13 million, more than enough for anybody who really wanted to play it. Yes Wii U sold poorly compared to other consoles, but most video games sell less than 13 million copies.
People are excited for Zelda BOTW on Switch b/c Wii U sold so poorly. But Skyward Sword sold only 4 million on the 100 million install base Wii. People will buy Switch for Zelda on the go, but is Zelda going to sell more than 13 million copies? Was the Wii U install base going to hinder Zelda sales that much? Those 13 million Wii U were sold to the Zelda base. Is BotW going to outsell OoT?
http://www.zeldainformer.com/zelda-sales-numbers-in-context/
I had a conversation on here with someone excited about how full the Splatoon 2 lobby would be on the great selling Switch b/c Wii U sold so poorly. Wii U had over a 10 million install base when Splatoon released, there won't be 10 million Switch sold until at least Christmas b/c I don't think Nintendo will make that many. So yes, Wii U sold poorly, but great Switch sales aren't going to give Splatoon 2 a larger install base this summer.
So I don't really think the "small" Wii U install base limited LCU sales. I'd bet even after releasing on 3 more consoles it's total sales won't be over the 13.4 million Wii U sales. Being a Wii U exclusive limited it, PS and Xboxen owners couldn't get it, but there were more than enough Wii U sold to meet demand if people really wanted to buy LCU.
As for declining prices, I think that's built in these days to publisher's thinking. Free-to-start is being replaced by $60-to-start. DLC and season passes for so many games. So when I see a game drop in price a few months after launch my first thought it - How much does the DLC cost? Unless it's a Lego game, then I think - Which new Lego game is coming out now? They had quite a run there for a few years, 2 or 3 a year with Batman and Marvel, and now there is the never ending Lego Dimensions $50 story packs and $30 levels.
So this game will be $40 soon. I think they could have made more money selling it for $40 from the start and keeping it there for awhile rather than getting the $60 from early adopters, waiting for sales to dry up, and then lowering it. At least release at $50. TPHD released at $50 and that came with a $15 amiibo.
Maybe if like the Wii U at $300 LCU was still at $50 or $60 I'd feel better about this, but when a Wii U game is $20 the past year it is looks very wrong on any console at $60. Like you said, a 10 year old game can still be as good as a 4 year old game or a new game so you'd pay the same price. But a $50 game 20 years ago I'm not paying $150 now, triple the price, when I can buy it for $10 on PSN or VC. LCU is $20 now, it shouldn't be $60 on other consoles even with co-op. (I probably should have opened with this paragraph, hope you got this far.)
Co-op.
Excelent. Guess not getting it on the wii u was a good idea in the end.
Never finished the game. I'll get when it's cheap, co-op will be great.
Omg...
Early April 2017 !
Wanna double dip again.
I hope there are some differences inside, from Chase's outfits, Nintendo reference for Switch version (Mario hat, Invincible Star, Piranha plant, etc), more disguise part to be used (I Really Really Really hope there are a Boxing glove hand part that can be used so I can create my Boxer Lego swarming around Lego City and I hope TT Fushion Color Palette to change hair color, skin color, outfits color, etc) more Mini games and many more.
@Yorumi
I take it you didn't buy on Wii U?
This is the only LEGO game that ever interested me (until LEGO Worlds- that looks like what they should have done to begin with) The gamepad integration was solid, but the load times were hoooorendous on the U.
If they fix the load times I'm in... eh, who am I kidding, I'll buy it anyways since I never played it more than once, but I won't be 😊 unless the load times are cut in half.
Kill the long load times guys!! Really slowed the game down! Thx
Any word on improvements, graphical or otherwise? The loading was horrendous.
One biggest thing to be realized about LEGO CITY Undercover is.... Nintendo reference inside this game. There are Mario Hat, Invincible Star, Piranha Plants, Green Pipe, etc that represent Nintendo franchises on Wii U version. So, what will happen to PS4 / xbox1 / PC / Steam version ? Will Nintendo stuffs not included on those machines due to Nintendo licence. What about Green Pipe that connected LEGO City with Liberty Island ? Will TT Fushion change it with different portal, no Green Pipe anymore ?
Guys, I think it will have MAJOR differences between Wii U version and Switch/ps4/xbox1/pc/steam version.
I never bought it because I'm kind of beyond caring to waste time in a sandbox type title, but the ultimate put off was the endless amount of long drawn out loading screens the WiiU release had. Will this one just load on the fly or do we have more stop and go to expect?
@Guovssohas
Hello.
3DS version was much smaller than Wii U version. Wii U version has Larger city and there are a LOT of places that you can't find on 3DS version. So basically Wii U version offers :
1. More new places, bigger map, more dynamic camera angle.
2. More flexible disguise custom. Also, Chase's looking in different disguise shown on Top Left + you can edit his name.
3. More missions to be finished.
4. You can ride helicopter on Wii U version. 3DS version just only transfer you to go different places.
5. The world fulfilled with so many peoples and cars on Wii U version. 3DS version looked so empty.
6. You need 3 times hit to destroy Lego objects for 3DS version, but only Once for Wii U version. Also, you can destroy the cars on Wii U version while 3DS version you can't destroy the cars.
I can say LEGO CITY Undercover Wii U version is Much Much better than 3DS version. So, you can try Switch version if you want to play on the go. I'm sure you will like it.
This was a great game. But the load times absolutely killed the joy of playing it. For me at least.
If they fix the load times, the addition of co-op will entice me to buy it. One of the biggest joys of my life is playing Lego games with my 4 1/2 and 7 year old boys.
Best lego game by far, I bought a few of the others on sale that came afterwards. Not even close to Lego City.
Will local co-op between multiple Switches be possible as well?
Will get this for my new switch because I want to play this on the go, but will be saddened knowing people playing on the other consoles will be getting trophies or achievements. I really hope there on switch, but I don't think they will be.
I never did get around to playing this.
It would sell much better if it was cheaper....
Already played it so I'm not bothered about getting it again.
@rjejr Lego games tend to come down in value very quickly. It will be $40 before Christmas.
I had a chance to play the original on Wii U once and I think the biggest advantage to playing on Switch would be reduced load times. The loads were atrocious on Wii U.
I played the hell out of the Wii U version, unlocking everything, and finding all the secrets. So, if co-op is really the only addition, I'm going to pass.
Another port to add to the growing list of old ports. Sigh where's the new games
I hope that they won't price it at full retail but keep the current Wii U price point. I haven't played this game yet and it looks like fun.
