THQ Nordic - the company formally known as Nordic Games - has confirmed that it has a pair of Nintendo Switch titles in development.
CEO Lars Wingefors revealed the news during an announcement regarding the company's latest IP acquisitions. THQ Nordic now owns the rights to Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, War Leaders: Clash of Nations and Legends of War.
Wingefors said:
These are not financially material acquisitions, but due to our love for these types of games they were natural acquisition targets that add up to our portfolio. Moreover, we also got a lot of messages from fans that encouraged us to add them. Among these titles, Sphinx (and the Cursed Mummy) is very well suited for the Nintendo audience – which we love to support.
We are excited for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo's new platform, and already have two other projects in development for it.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy originally released on the PS2, Xbox and GameCube back in 2003, and was developed by Eurocom and published by the original THQ. War Leaders: Clash of Nations is a PC-based real-time tactics game, while Legends of War is a turn-based strategy which has been released on PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, PC and PS Vita.
Thanks to SLIGEACH_EIRE for the tip.

Safe bet that one of the two games is probably a port of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, and is most likely why the Wii U edition has been delayed.
I really dislike the perception of "Nintendo audience". If the higher ups think this is what we like, we can kiss third parties goodbye. Why? You may ask. Simple, we won't buy enough of these games to warrant them making anymore games. I'm not beyond playing ANY game if it's good. Sadly Mario constantly outshines any and all platformers, making other cartoony platformers almost irrelevant.I'm purely talking about platformers released on a Nintendo console. Not to mention plenty of the Nintendo crowd want something more than E-rated games. So if all we get is this we will not buy enough leading to no mas third party support. I've bought most games worth my money regardless of publisher or rating, but if we as a "Nintendo audience" can't change the perception of "us" only buying kiddie games we are in for a bad ride......again.
Ya, Sphinx and The Cursed Mummy was a terrific game. I'd love to see a sequel.
@DragonEleven
I certainly hope not. We shouldn't be getting these old tired games at launch. The only exception should be Skyrim. The reason being that we have never received any games from Bethesda. This would be an ideal time to prove any game will sell on a Nintendo console.
Sphinx and The Cursed Mummy. Game had it's flaws,but it's pretty damn good in my opinion.
@Tsurii Perfect icon with the perfect comment.
Darksiders 3 would be awesome.
Hmm. I forgot about sphinx. I need to pick up a gamecube version. (although I do find it odd that they are now relegating it to a nintendo audience game when it was a multiplat. how about making the same game for each platform and let people buy it on the platform they like best? Insane, I know.)
Never heard of that IP... This is the dev behind Darksiders?
If so, most likely we'll get the port of the first game.
Not ideal, but at This point in time, all (Not shovelware) third party support is welcome.
@whanvee I agree with your point to an extent, but I would also mention that the state of the platformer has all but dried up save for Mario (and now 2d indies), so no wonder he is the most popular, he never left our mind's eye. I can barely think of a platformer on other current consoles (that are not indies).
There is this current resurgences of the SNES/N64/GC heyday of the platformer, so I expect that we will see more, eg. Yooka Laylee, HD Crash, and tons of other 2d platformers.
That's cool, but i'd still like to know who owns Aidyn Chronicles... and who I have to see about getting a sequel.
@whanvee I agree with you to some extent but I have no issue with being part of the "Nintendo audience". IMO we, the audience, like quality, innovative and most importantly fun games that can be targeted at any demographic. If THQ Nordic make such a game, market it correctly/generate a little hype then it will sell regardless of the platform it's on and what audience it's perceived to be for. But it all starts with making a good game.
Good to hear, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy was a great game on the GameCube, and it certainly looked pretty good too, especially considering the year of its release and the platforms it was on (also on PS2 and Xbox), so if they are going to make a sequel to that or an HD reboot, then I would certainly not disagree, in fact I would be all for it.
For all you curious people that have never played it:

A HD remaster of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy from the ground up like Crash Bandicoot N'Sane Trilogy would be a very logical decision for THQ Nordic to revitalise the franchise again.
@Tsurii I take it more as a child friendly crowd. Which is the way we as nintendo fans or "audience" are perceived. It's an image neither nintendo nor us it's fans have been able to shake off.
THQ Nordic have been loyal to Nintendo fans and have supported the Wii U even when other third parties have abandoned it, so they definitely have my support. Also, everybody who has played Sphinx has nothing but good things to say about it so I'm game for a sequel or reboot.
Darksiders 1 and 2?
Hey I'm down if done right especially since I can play the game anywhere I please 🙂.
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy on Switch sounds perfect. Great game
"Nintendo Audience" Well im not going to assume what he meant but, ill take that as a compliment. Besides if it was an insult, I'd just eat em whole! I am a predator after all.
OMG Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy!!!! THQ Nordic! COME THROUUUUUUGH!
I had this game on PS2 back in the day hopefully THQ Nordic is going to remaster it for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. Also hopefully they make a new one also, it really is a great game.
Sphinx was a decent game, not great IMO. However, I loved the gauntlet trials. Those were awesome.
That's great to hear. I'd love to hear some news of Darksiders' Wii U release, though.
War Leaders: Clash of Nations? I never thought I'd see that game again.
I loved it, but it crashed too much to ever get into.
Here's to a sequel or a patch!
@pennylessz Uhhh... Don't you mean "Sequel"?
@whanvee
"if we as a "Nintendo audience" can't change the perception of "us" only buying kiddie games we are in for a bad ride......again"
Before we can change that perception, first we need to actually change that reality. Take a look at the top 100 selling Wii U games on VGchartz and just see how well all the 3rd party multiplats and AAA games did...
It's not perception we need to worry about, it's reality.
That's interesting. I was under the impression that THQ wasn't around anymore.
@JaxonH
I didn't even know there was 100 games on the Wii U. 😂😂😂😂
Seriously though we got close to zero multiplatform games on wii u. Most that we got were close to launch, and they were pretty lacking ports. I know during the wii, we got lots of M rated games. Most weren't bought at all.
@Tempestryke
They're not. But THQ Nordic is. Nordic Games bought a lot of THQ's IP during the auction and renamed their studio under the THQ banner. They're the ones who released the Darksiders and Darksiders 2 Remastered titles which dropped this past year. Rumor has it they're working on Darksiders 3 and trying to build interest in the franchise again.
@JaxonH
Ah. Thank you for clearing that up. ^^
@GrooveManyula
Yeah, that was auto correct, sorry.
@DragonEleven You mean cancelled
@Fazermint Delaying it so close to release means it would have been almost finished, so they'd only lose money if they cancelled it completely... they'd most likely just go with a digital-only release simultaneously with a Switch release.
I would LOVE to see a Port of "Ori and the Blind Forest" on the Nintendo SWITCH and maybe They're preparing to release a Port of Darksiders, Titled along the lines of: "Darksiders: Hack and Slash 2 DEATH" that includes 1 and 2!
