
As many of you are no doubt aware, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse is a day away from releasing in North America. The hotly anticipated RPG released in Japan months ago, and Atlus has been busy over the past year getting the game ready for Western audiences. In a rare oversight, though, it seems that the localization team accidentally left in some Japanese text, and it'll be in the game when it releases later this week.
So here's what happened. The Japanese text shows up twice, both times in a very specific context during a certain boss fight at the end of the game. The text is only found if you happen to have your partner knocked out at the moment the boss initiates dialogue. Rather amusingly, the text didn't get caught because everyone on the QA team was too good at the game and never found themselves in a scenario where their partner fell unconscious during the fight. A fix is being looked into, but it's currently unknown when or if the text will ever be fixed. You can find the official apology here on Atlus' blog.

Maybe it's not a translation error, maybe the boss knows Japanese, and is speaking the language at that one part.
Also, it's swell Atlus, thanks for the free SMTIV:A 3DS theme (as well as the free KoF14 gals theme on PS4).

@Sanicranfast That's the only part that's confusing me, it seems like a simple fix but they're kinda implying otherwise. Maybe it's just a matter of resources?

@blackice85 they did say their translation resources are all tied up with Persona 5 and other projects.
For two lines or something, I'll let it slide. Better they work double time on Persona 5.

Considering the method that triggers this is one that most players won't even encounter, it's incredibly easy to forgive Altus for not only being too good at the game, but for this small overlook in text. Not a big deal at all as far as I see it.
Love how fans quickly called Atlus USA a terrible company. The rarity of this issue meant i didn't experience it on my playthough just like the playtesters.
The game is working perfectly on day one, so I guess they had to complain about something right.
Well, testers being 'too good' isn't a great excuse - as game testers are supposed to be thorough and they should have purposefully played themselves into the scenario where the glitch could have happened. Unfortunate, but Atlus did the right thing by getting ahead of it and apologizing for the mistake right away.
I think there was a similar thing in Devil Survivor where one of the endgame bosses' lines was left untranslated.
Atlus apologized and explained the reason the issue is present the moment they became aware of it. That says volumes about the integrity of their localization team, imo. At least when Nintendo isn't looking over their shoulder.

Huh, it seems like they are implying they can't do a quick patch to change it? I don't know squat about this stuff, though it does seem like a simple thing that would take all of ten minutes to recode.
Ugh.... they have totally messed this up, thanks Nintendo. First you take away my bathing suits from Fire Emblem Fates, then the bikinis from my Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, then you don't make everything in Japanese so I can't read it at all in Shim Megami Tensei IV Part 2: Apocalypse. The world is ending.

@Hey-Cha-La it's literally 2 dialogue options that you most likely wouldn't have seen or known about it prior to what was found days ago. And they inherently wouldn't have ruined your experience since they're found at the end of the game. Why this was even an issue is beyond me.
Now, they just need to apolgise for Tokyo Mirage Sessions censorship. I'm joking! Nintendo are the ones responsible for that apology.

They should get me to test the game. No one will ever accuse me of being too good. I don't think I've ever beaten an RPG in a time close to the average on howlongtobeat.com.
@Randomname19 Yeah I would have expected that too, all the software I develop has a separate language file that we give to translators and they just translate the strings in there to the language needed.
I would guess in this case either someone hard coded some text into the game instead of using the language file, or there's some sort of bug in the code where it's not looking in the right place for the line of text and then defaults back to the Japanese language file.

this by no means stops SMT:A from being one of my most anticipated titles this year. this and DQ7 rule the world (regardless of japanese text) no biggie
@NicolausCamp I hope they leave it in. Some quirks are just fun. You would probably change 'All your base are belong to us' too.

huh. I always thought the translators received a huuuuge batch file or something that contained every spoken line and description in the game and they just translated that instead of having to play through all of it.
how annoying and inefficient to have to play the game over and over to catch all of the lines. Oh well, it sucks, but I wasn't planning on getting it anyways (don't really like the designs). Hope Persona 5 is better (and not censored) because that's the one I'm excited for. (^_^ )/

They never patched the untranslated lines in soul hackers so I'm not counting on this being fixed.
now that reminded me that there was also a single japanese text on devil survivor overclocked, it was the final battle on yuzu's route with bel .... atlus why you do this

This is not QA's fault for being "too good". It's localisation. They mark all the text in the game and are given every string ID to check. So they knew that text about being KO'd existed, but yet it was not seen in-game (somehow). Just so you all know.
Well, maybe they will fix it for the European release since that is still long time before it's released.
