Nintendo of America has confirmed that there's plenty of Pokémon goodness on the way in this week's Download Update on 23rd June; three releases are coming to the Wii U Virtual Console.
The three games due will give Pokémon spin-off fans plenty to do, with a mix of GBA and DS gaming on the home console:
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
The first two are already available in Europe, but it seems North America is getting DS title Explorers of Sky first.
Are any of you in North America planning to pick these up?
With thanks to Ryan Millar for the heads up.

omggg... RIP Wallet buying all 3.
wheres explorers of darkness/time?
gotta have all 5!
Does EU/JP already have sky even?
@Uberchu But red and blue rescue team have the same story...
@Kimyonaakuma but they don't all have the same pokemon...
plus one is GBA and the other is DS. so they play a little differently.
I own Red some where, never had blue and have sky.
I will buy all the pokemon/Game Freak VC games. nobody will stop me
Never played a Pokemon game. R they good? What's the wordy?
meh
I always wanted to play the original games of this series. Guess it's time to buy another eShop card!
@mrchills yeah they are, but there not the traditional style of game.
there mystery dungeon style... out of the 3 here, sky is def the best. if you need more info freel free to ask.
you play as a pokemon in these games.
I've been waiting for NoA to get their heads out of their reer forever so I can get Pokemon VC, and drill dozer. seems like We might even be getting better VC than EU/JP since I don't think they have sky yet could be wrong.
I'll probally just go pick up an eShop card tomorrow if I can, maybe 2 cards. make sure I have enough for both plus next thursday since I see no time/darkness on this list.
I started with Explorers of Darkness, so I never got to play the originals. I hear they're very hard as they don't have the conveniences that later games introduced.
Explorers of Sky was my first Mystery Dungeon game, and damn was that a trip. It was a huge adventure, with simple but lovable characters, and a compelling story. The first game to genuinely bring a tear to my eye (hey, I was still a kid)
@RealPoketendoNL I always wish the names of the attacks were on teh bottom screen, and the top screen was just the characters in the map. Holding L or R and having half the top screen covered in text really broke the immersion of being a pokemon for me...
@Detective_TeeJay well I only had red, but you are 100% correct. those games are so hard compared to super MD and the newer ones.
I'm getting red because GBA and my MD game
Blue because I've never played/owned it and would like to try the OG DS MD game.
Sky because its the best...
who am I kidding? Hardcore Pokefan here buying all 3 because pokemon! EEEEEEE so happy.
Would of thought they'd milk Time and Darkness before added the "improved" 3rd version, but I guess they'll do it later then.
Also according to Serebi.net, NOA will be releasing a summer of Pokemon VC titles, hopefully one of em will be Snap I hope... T.T
@Uberchu EU has on Wii U:
Pinball Ruby & Sapphire
Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team
Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team
Ranger
Ranger Guardian Signs
Ranger Shadows of Almia
PokePark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure
Don't know about Japan but definitely know they have Snap.
Eh, pass. I love the occasional Pokemon spinoff, but the grinding and luck-based recruiting system in Blue Rescue Team eventually made me swear off this spinoff series.
@Uberchu ok you go for it! My wallet will pray for you
Omg I was waiting for explorers of sky, I love that title!!
Too bad I live in Europe tho... I have to be patient... :s
@Uberchu thank you
@Grumblevolcano Since youre 'one of the few people I know w/ a sense of humour around here...
Nintnedo NoA is having a "Nintnedo 3DS Summer Vacation sweepstakes" and giving away a ... 2DS. Well I suppose it's less funny than a Mario & Sonic 3DS demo on the day the Wii U game comes out, but funny nonetheless.

You feel like covering this @ThomasBW84 or have you sent all emails from me to your spam folder? Can't say that I blame you.
This is cool to see. My old friend use to love these games and told me to try them... I never did though. I think I was turned off from the series due to the controversy of the 3DS entries. I might give Blue Rescue Team and Explorers of Sky a go.
@rjejr I'm not purposefully ignoring any emails, chances are I've just missed it. Last week was pretty gruelling hours-wise for me, so some tips etc have fallen through the cracks in all likelihood. Thanks though
I'll give em a whirl
Oh, god, Nintendo, stop! First the E3 sale, now this... You're killing my wallet!
I'll get Red Rescue Team. I've been waiting for that one to grace the VC.
@wiggleronacid was super mystery dungeon controversial? I thought people liked it about as much as the ds ones for the most part, and that people only had an issue with gates
interested in trying out Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, i watch the special base on it waaay back in (2004?). i hope they bring Pokemon Conquest, that look interesting for a Fire Emblem and Pokemon Crossover. ALSO, Nintendo
Please
Bring
Pokemon
Stadium
to
Wii U
eShop!
I never played these. I still have to get Pokemon Yellow! Yikes!
(Don't worry I'm slowly revisiting my childhood as I crawl through Red and I'm loving it)
Oh, supreme! the PMD games and I go fairly far back, when I got Red Rescue for GBA. I liked it, but never beat it as a kid. Later when Gates to Infinity came out, I tried the demo, but it didn't seem like anything special. Then when Super Mystery Dungeon came out, I heard a lot of great things about it near launch, and I wanted to give the series another shot. I ended up falling in love with Super Mystery Dungeon, I think it's easily one of the best 3DS games available (as well as one of the best 3DS soundtracks). It made me buy Explorers of Sky and Gates to Infinity as soon as I beat it and also go back to finish Red Rescue. Although, I still haven't played Explorers or Gates with my already massive backlog, so I won't be picking up these on VC. It's awesome they're available though, because Explorers of Sky can be fairly pricey.
I highly recommend the MD games to Pokemon fans who wish the mainline games had better story. I also recommend the series to RPG fans who like to actually self-insert themselves onto the main character, and to those who love video game music.
@Jacadamia
SMD's story has gotten its fair share of criticism from what I've seen online. I loved it, however I have to admit I totally see where people's complaints come from. They're valid complaints, but it just depends on the kind of person you are. The ending just sort of... Does its own thing. In my opinion, I think it was a pretty great effort, because it at least tries to shake things up a bit. Aside from that, diehard Explorers fans are unable to believe that anything can reach Sky's height, so they'll say all sorts of things. I haven't played Sky yet (I'm eager, though!) but I get the feeling there's some nostalgic bias going on there.
It's very hard for me not to become a hater anytime I read about portable VC games not coming to the portable.
...
Okay, managed control it for now.
It's still dumb though.
Explorers of Sky, here I come. I found a used physical version at GameStop for $20, but I will get the VC version for $10.
@ThomasBW84 Just a joke TW, I don't think you can send emails from me to your spam folder since they all come from NL.
Saw your tweet, sad news about PX. I hope you guys aren't in any trouble. The thought has crossed my mind a few times, particularly when Nintendo said NX in March 17 but no NX at E3. That's 9 months of covering Paper Mario. Good thing 3DS has a good game every month. You guys ever decide to change your name to "3DS Life" I'd completely understand.
best Pokemon spin-off. the games are so fun and the stories are very compelling and interesting.
@abbyhitter Explorers of the sky is the best one.
getting all three but probably explorers of sky first. loved that game. Haven't finished Super MD yet. But it will give me my Pokemon fix until Sun & Moon come out
@Uberchu Then enjoy getting a Japanese Wii and getting the shoddy PMD Wiiware games....other than that I agreed. I love PMD Red and Sky.
Still confused why most of the reviewers that reviewed the games hated the genre and gave the games far too low ratings. I am looking at you too Nintendolife!
Just a quick look at Metacritic on PMD Sky shows this, with the user ratings very positive..compared to reviewers giving the game around a 6.5 rating...
@RealPoketendoNL Same. The ending of the story's first part and the side mission in the future brought tears to my eyes when I was a kid.
I would love for the GBA/DS main series Pokémon games to be released on Wii U, even if they lack multiplayer (though it would be nice if they make up for this by allowing Pokémon to be transferred to Pokémon Bank or any of the 3DS games).
@Tsurii I feel like I made PMD Red waay too easy for myself when I was a kid...I took my Charizard and went to an area with a Mystery Box (not going to spoil) and just grinded there. Once I reached lv 100, nothing could withstand my Heat Wave.
You haven't lived until you see 9999 damage done to Shedinja!
@Gorlokk Oh yeah, I loved it personally, but yeah, I can definitely pick out some things that felt a bit... weird. The second half felt pretty rushed compared to the beginning. Storywise I'd say it was great but definitely not perfect, but I really digged the gameplay of SMD, it felt a lot more fun, but was actually still challenging. I'm not entirely sure why... but it was for me
Not getting any, because none of them are coming to the 3DS.
Sky is the best in the series I have played but I don't know if I could stomach playing the whole game again on a home console. I play my copy all the time on my 3DS and I have Red Rescue team emulated on my phone for my breaks at work.
Oh man, hype. I'll definitely give Explorers of Sky a shot - been meaning to play that one for a long time.
Really Sky is a DS game it cannot be on the 3ds? Is the 3ds inferior to the DS? Come on. No excuses for this not to be available on 3ds plenty of ds games are on the 3ds Jewel Quest games, Puzzle Quest, etc.
@mrchills Mystery Dungeon is a spin-off series. Not a core game series. For a spin-off, MD are good. If you like 99F labirynts filled with traps with some story between venturing, you may find it interesting. A bit repetitive but not too shabby.
@Eisenbolan I think they will not release the game as DSiWare. Keep in mind that the 3DS has limited memory alocated for DSiWare tittles. I'm not sure how much space they left for DSiwares on the system and how much memory takes a DS MD game. If the game exceed the limit, emulating is the other way. But we all know that Nintendo did not release an emulator for DS tittles on 3DS.
Of course, they could release the game as a standalone retail tittle on eShop, but as far as I know, none of the DS retail tittles were released that way, while not being labelled as DSiWare.
@KTT thank you
@JaxonH Just like how you gave Super Mystery Dungeon a whirl?
Why not on the 3ds? I'd play the heck out of these games on my system.
@Jacadamia From what I have seen, especially from fans of the entire series, the story is very lacking and the beginning of the game is way too tedious. I heard it is much better than Gates to Infinity, though.
But like I said, this is just from what I have heard. I never played any game in the series yet, but I'll be sure to soon!
@Tsurii Good to hear! I'll be sure to play through Explorers of Sky sometime within the next week or two. It's a shame the past two entries haven't been up to par with the earlier games (from what I have heard).
@Grumblevolcano I have pinball (DL and GBA cart) and both poke parks on disk since u can do Wii on Wii U no need for digital on pokeparks.
but yeah it seems like we just need the 3 ranger games and time/darkness, oh and snap and Pokemon puzzle challenge.
I would 90001/10 rebuy pinball on 3DS if they let me or even the GB pinball. (never played GB)
With this announcement I assume it means no time/darkness DS VC
@TeeJay
In all likelihood, exactly like that
I'll get Explorers of Sky because I've never played it, and I might replay the first game.
Come on, Shibata! Give us Explorers of Sky!
Now it's our turn to play catchup, I guess. My American friends, I hope you have a blast with the Mystery Dungeon games.
Is this also going to be released on 3DS XL eshop?
