It's Japanese Media Create chart results time again, and after a sustained spell of ruling the roost the 3DS and its games take a backseat this week, though that was always on the cards.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Hideo Kojima's final entry in the series and with Konami, has naturally taken the two top spots with PS4 and PS3 versions, therefore pushing Dragon Quest VIII down a couple of places. Nevertheless key evergreen releases on 3DS and Wii U are still progressing well, with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer likely to be just one week from hitting one million retail sales. The software results, with lifetime sales in brackets, are below.
- [PS4] Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami, 09/02/15) – 293,652 (New)
- [PS3] Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami, 09/02/15) – 117,547 (New)
- [3DS] Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (Square Enix, 08/27/15) – 106,823 (691,539)
- [3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters: Red Cat Team / White Dog Squad (Nintendo, 07/11/15) – 49,542 (1,450,344)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (Nintendo, 07/30/15) – 30,840 (989,889)
- [Wii U] Splatoon (Nintendo, 05/28/15) – 18,826 (626,497)
- [3DS] Rhythm Tengoku: The Best+ (Nintendo, 06/11/15) – 9,293 (455,284)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SCE, 03/19/15) – 8,355 (317,041)

- [PS4] Dragon's Dogma Online Limited Edition (Capcom, 08/27/15) – 3,660 (32,976)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf (Nintendo, 11/08/12) – 3,422 (4,038,451)
- [3DS] Super Robot Wars BX (Bandai Namco, 08/20/15) – 3,189 (114,978)
- [PS3] Infinite Stratos 2: Love and Purge (5pb., 09/03/15) – 2,973 (New)
- [PS4] Until Dawn (SCE, 08/27/15) – 2,829 (20,301)
- [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (Pokemon, 11/21/14) – 2,807 (2,692,914)
- [3DS] Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright / Conquest (Nintendo, 06/25/15) – 2,563 (415,150)
- [PSV] Taiko Drum Master: V Version (Bandai Namco, 07/09/15) – 2,446 (92,993)
The hardware results being a major boost for the PS4, and with the 3DS models falling due to the absence of equivalent new releases that means Sony's system securing top spot. Wii U sales also declined this week, albeit while staying in five figures; the results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- PlayStation 4 – 54,494 (18,539)
- New 3DS LL – 26,976 (38,498)
- PlayStation Vita – 11,099 (12,125)
- Wii U – 10,232 (11,781)
- New 3DS – 5,179 (7,089)
- PlayStation 3 – 2,817 (2,571)
- 3DS – 1,692 (2,216)
- 3DS LL – 909 (1,116)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 609 (567)
- Xbox One – 180 (168)
Next week's results will include sales for Super Mario Maker, which will be interesting to see.

Next week will be very interesting, Snake vs Mario!
I'm pretty sure Super Mario Maker is going to do numbers. I'm predicting 100000+ units sold. Maybe even far more.
To be fair, Dragon Quest sold about 600,000 in it's first week.
Anyone else expecting a high level of arrogance from a certain other site?
I don't think it is that surprising Metal Gear Solid V is selling as much as it Is and giving the PS4 a huge bump really :+).
Still it would be nice if it happened that SMTxFE would help the Wii U as much, I am fairly sure SMTxFE wouldn't help the Wii U that much unfortunately ;^^. (Still you can hope I guess .).
And after playing MGSV, i have no idea why :/
Pretty much my biggest disappointments this year.
Nintendo and Playstation games almost even split in terms of quantity in the top 20.
I think Super Mario Maker will do well in Japan, but maybe not as well as people think. Mario seems to sell better in America anymore than Japan, but maybe being able to create levels will change that.
Hm, was Metal Gear Solid really that popular in japan? I thought it was one of these franchises that were far more popular in the west. Oh well, I'm somewhat happy that Kojima's farewell flag is going strong. Makes the bitter pill all that much harder for Konami to swallow!
@Einherjar I barely ever dealt much with the MGS franchise, so I wouldn't know, anyway, but is it really that disappointing? The hype makes it difficult to see what impressions are relatable and what is just fangasm...
Metal Gear Solid V and Super Mario Maker are both genre defining hammer smashing anvils. I finally got Phantom Pain in the mail yesterday (NEVER preorder a game online through Gamestop a week before Labor Day, or any game that releases around a federal holiday.) Even though mine is PS3. Its a masterpiece. The only thing thatll keep me from playing it is Super Mario Maker.
Congrats to mgs but a new game versus an old port (even if it is DQ) those are lower numbers than I expected for Kojima's swan song.
@Kaze_Memaryu Its hard to explain really.
Even though you never dealt with it, youve probably heard people mocking it as "Its a movie that is interupted by short game sequences".
And thats the main appeal really. Its an action movie with a few but really solid gameplay sequences. A Recording of MGS4s cutscenes back-to-back clocks in at about 8 Hours. 8 hours of pure story sequences.
So, as a fan of the series, i kinda expected the same. Especially since this is teh grand finale of the prequel miniseries.
And....so far, it could very well be a Call of Duty title with infinitly better gameplay. The story, especially in comparison to the rest of the series is paper thin. Just an ordinary war plot.
And your team ? The series was praised for its cast time and time again. This time, you have exactly 2 characters who do the taking, your field team consists of your silent protagonist (Yup, they got rid of David Hayter, hired Kifer Sutherland just so Snake can stay silent...), a horse, a dog and a sniper who cant talk....The best mix for the series trademark conversations...
The gameplay on the other hand is top notch. But doing the same type of mission (Kill X, Rescue Y, Blow up Z) over and over again without any story purposes other than "Hey, were Mercs, they hired us, lets do it" gets rather tedious after a while.
It deserves its high ratings, especially for newcomers. But for veterans, who expected the same kind of movie like experience, its rather disappointing.
Dude, Metal Gear Solid V is a masterpiece. Can't blame people for buying that game- it really is that good.
It's definitely my new fave on PS4, without a doubt. And the thing is, I am SO horrible at stealth, and despite owning MGS Twin Snakes on GC, MGS2 and MGS3 on Vita in the HD Collection (plus MGS3 on 3DS), MGS Peacewalker on Vita, and Ground Zeroes on PS4 (and used to own MGS4 on PS3), I could never get past the first few hours of the game on any of them, save MGS Ground Zeroes (I did beat that one). I'm THAT bad lol.
In fact, Splinter Cell Blacklist was the first stealth game I got in to. And it took well over an hour to even beat the tutorial on easy. But once it clicked, I really had a good time with it.
But this game is different. Maybe it's more accessible, maybe it's all my practice over the years while failing, maybe it's Ground Zeroes and Splinter Cell Blacklist's preparation, but whatever the reason, I'm actually doing pretty well in MGSV. And I love it.
Impressive PS4 numbers. Sony has to be happy to see that kind of a bump.....pretty much a whole month sales in 1 week.
Can't wait to see what next week brings for Nintendo
@JaxonH See, thats the reason i dont really think its that good ^^
For me, its almost routine at this point.
So far, no kills and 1 alert tops per (long) mission. For a 10 minutes mission, you could say that 6 minutes are survailance, 2 mins in, 2 mins out.
Over and over and over again.
Its the first MGS game i havent finished in "one sitting" (meaning without other games in between) because the story itself just crawls at a snails pace with the gameplay becomming more and more routine.
I even quit side ops all together or else i would have quit the game for good.
DQ8 sold 173,517 more on their first week on one platform than mg5 did on two platforms....sooooo......yeh
FE......why can't you sell more? WE WANT MORE NUMBERS SO WE CAN GET MORE FE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aside that, pretty much expected this to happen. But seeing as how MGSV is multiplat, I'm curious as how the PS4 one sold better.......
@Artwark How is almost 500k ONLY IN JAPAN, not good?
@Artwark Im pretty sure its due to brand loyalty, since MGS has always been a PlayStation title. And MGS4 is still a PS exclusive title.
V > VIII ?
What a logic!!
XD
Great to see MGSV on top, while I never played any title of it, but I would be happy to see a game like this succeed and slap Konami face. Poor Xbox version however... didn't chart and no boost whatsoever.
Nothing really stand out for 3DS and Wii U this week, it just had continuing good numbers. SMM next week will be interesting, it might be another surprise like Splatoon, with decent legs and drive Wii U's 5-digits number until the next game. Good job Splatoon for carrying Wii U basically alone for this long.
I have a wiiu and an Xbox one, it's a shame the poor thing hardly exists! Still I have a feeling Wii U will get a nice boost when Mario maker comes out!
@Volcanox
Pushsquare sucks talking about charts, they never mention Nintendo no matter the results.
@Frank90 It's less of that and more....the charts do change, and it is a positive thing, but unless they can be arrogant about PS4 success they don't want to hear it.
Which is odd...because other wider fanbases tend to be positive, unless it goes really tits up (See Nintendo and UK)
I can't believe Happy Home Designer is going to outsell Mario Kart 8 - I mean COME ON PEOPLE!
@Einherjar Sounds like a lot of missed potential, especially since the crazy characters in MGS are the thing that I always think of right after stealth gameplay, too. Thanks for the explanation, that actually gave me a good middle ground to orientate with. ^_^
@Kaze_Memaryu Yup, thats pretty much what i missed the most.
The talks between the team members, the goofy chit chats about Snakes weird hobbys etc.
Now its basically just Millers news about the current war situation and thats it.
If youre in for a pure mission based stealth game, you can hardly find anything better. But if you want a story driven game, youll definitly wont find it there.
First time in awhile to my knowledge that the 3ds models put together did not get top spot.
@Artwark Like others have said. The MGS series is known for being on PlayStation consoles. Naturally it's gonna sell more on PlayStation consoles. Same as the Tomb Raider series and/or Final Fantasy. It would be the same for Monster Hunter being on platforms (which it is), but it's best on Nintendo consoles or gamers feel more at home with playing MH on Nintendo consoles.
Good to see Dragon Quest 8 put up some good numbers. I need so much Dragon Quest in my life, 7, 8 and 11, and I cannot wait for Fire Emblem to come West.
Well deserved. Nice to see something that's not weird anime crap at the top of the charts for a change!
MGSV did well and certainly pushed a ton of PS4 hardware. This will likely be the single biggest week of PS4 sales until late December.
Also, this is the first time Splatoon's weekly sales have dropped below 20,000, though selling 18,000 is still exceptionally good.
@Ichiban Not saying MSGIV doesn't deserve this (not to mention to think a port is going to top Kojima's Kingdom Hearts 3 us remarkable stupid) , but are you really taking a stab at Dragon Quest only because of you not being to open to it art style?
For 2nd week numbers, 106k and 3rd place seems like a pretty good result, considering the newness of the competition (and the fact the Kojima is done doesn't hurt the game's sales either).
How long has it been since a game sold over a hundred thousand copies and still hit just 3rd place??
It's got to have been a while.
@Chaoz not at all. I have respect for Dragon Quest, & absolutely love the Tales series. But I don't consider them weird, stuff like that Miku dance rubbish & that recent 3DS fighting game with the boobs I sure as heck do though.
And I have no idea what you mean regarding Kingdom Hearts 3 lol (another one of my all time fav series)
@Ichiban Weird anime stuff doesn't really sell that well for the most part since it is marketed toward otaku. Perhaps the only one in the top 20 is Infinite Stratos.
First of all...X-box doesn't sell good at all in Japan...next up, PS4 is going to dominate, so I don't get why it'll always be a shocker. 3DS and Wii U are still going good over there, with Wii U doing better there than in the US here. Other than that, there was a lot of hype and advertising that was going on for Metal Gear Solid V, and I didn't really see too much about Dragon Quest VIII as much. Super Mario Maker comes out soon, and I'm sure that will push the top spot for a while. I still love how Animal Crossing City Folk is still on the list...everyone in Japan should already have a copy of that!!!!
