It was only a matter of time before entrepreneurial third parties started making their own creative New Nintendo 3DS cover plates, and this is a beauty. Taking inspiration from Nintendo's classic series of Game & Watch devices, the Retro Plate & Watch actually looks really cool.
While the LCD display doesn't appear to let you play a game (as if it could actually compete with your New 3DS anyway!), it does sport a clock, alarm, timer and even a thermometer.
Costing 2,970 Japanese Yen (£15.50 / $24), this might not be a cheapest import, but you'd surely be the envy of all your friends rocking this at your next StreetPass meet. The Retro Plate & Watch will be released on 30th September, will you be ordering one?

Wow that looks awesome. Definitely want one but how much is that in pounds? :/
That's the screen I've been waiting for on the Game pad since day 1. That and a digital photo frame. I still can't believe they released a tablet like Game pad w/ 2 stands - one for display, 1 for displaying while charging - yet they never released a single app to make use of it. I know they probably are saving us from having our Wii U on 24/7 but how much is a clock chip to run w/o the U? Those digital frames are pretty cheap now as well.
Oh well, still looks cool, in fact that's the same display as the wall clock I recently purchased for my living room, time, date, day, temp.
It's cool, but seems needlessly bulky and probably adds weight to the system too.
Aw...I want it .
@rjejr son of a b...... I never thought of a digital photo frame! That is a no brainier! It could even display in-game images that you've taken.... Arrgh! Nintendo R&D, (since you were listening to us, at least according to NL, about Devils Third) please be reading this and take note! perhaps a poll from all those loyalists that purchased a DDP WiiU about what kind of features they would like the next Gampad to utilize.
That is awesome! Watch it go out of stock instantly though. ;_;
Also it's not expensive at all if Google's accurate. It says it's just £15.53 which isn't much more than the normal price for faceplates. Remember, Yen is worth a lot less than the British Pound so when you see quadruple digits, don't just assume that means something's expensive.
Instabuy for me! Genius. Bring this to the UK, bet sales would be good
@rjejr I use the tablet stand when i play off-TV a lot, using a third controller. i also use it for netflix sometimes, and have it propped up. Its mostly older games that that works with
@Platypus101 @rjejr I think you could use the Wii Photo Channel as digital photo frame. Not sure I'd want to leave my Wii U running all the time for that though.
@chardir no, no, no. That simply will not do. The Gamepad should be a digital photo frame or timepiece without the need to turn on the WiiU... Just the Gamepad. At least then it would serve some form of real world purpose... Hey! Look, @Rjejr just invented the first QoL product for Nintendo using their already existing infrastructure!
Cool cover plate. Plus it gets released on my birthday!
@Platypus101 That would be nice, but I don't think the gamepad is capable of anything without the console supplying the input.
@chardir The console doesn't need to be on, just on standby, for the Gamepad to blink when notifications are recieved though so it could use something similar or just use what the old devices like Game & Watch and most other LCD games used for that stuff when it's powered off.
True, I never knew I wanted it. In fact, I still don't know if I want to smack a bulky clock onto my N3DS... no, scratch that, it looks way too ugly.
I was wondering why there hasn't been any Game & Watch cover plates or special edition systems, seeing as how the DS was inspired by the multi screen games, and that it would just look awesome! This looks cool, albeit really bulky, but I'd consider buying it if I had a New 3DS.
Cool, but adds bulk.
@AVahne I agree, but it's so cool I can forgive that.
@AVahne Yeah, it would be better if it was thinner. I'm also concerned about it getting wrecked because my Pokemon OR/AS faceplate which I bought the day after I got my New 3DS is literally covered in scratches even though I keep it in a slipcase with a velcro flap when I'm out and about and avoid lying it top down or putting anything on it any other times.
This is sooooooo cumbersome, unwieldily, ridiculous, and just plain weird. I need this!!!! (Why must I be a poor American with no Faceplate 3DS glory!?!??!)
This is an dumb idea. I have real game and watch items. Why do I need to glue one to an NDS/3dS which is poorly designed no matter which way.
Ohhh wellllll.
@RegalSin You don't need to... That's the beauty of it being a faceplate. It's just there to make it look pretty, nothing more (well and you kinda need the bottom one to protect all the stuff like the battery and Micro SD card but hey).
Also poorly designed in your opinion, a lot of people happen to disagree...
GUYS! I just discovered a problem! It can't be shipped outside Japan!
@rjejr the gamepad does have the internals to run independently from the Wii U. The remote works no matter what and years ago Nintendo showed a checkers hand running on the gamepad without the base station.
How can Nintendo NOT think of Game & Watch cover plate.....
Oh well, at least they respect it in Smash.
@DEAD Same.
Man, you guys from Europe are so lucky to have the smaller New 3ds! makes me want to settle in Europe.
Wow. That's amazing.... Nearly enough to make me regret getting the XL model over the standard
Meh, unless it let's you play a classic Game & Watch game, I don't see a reason to own this.
@Captain_Gonru - No faceplates for you.
So, is there a link where I can buy this and get posted to Ireland? Anyone?
@Platypus101 - "Nintendo R&D"
I'm sure they've seen it, and their thoughts are always the same:
"Oh no, not that rjejr guy again."
I'm also still waiting for an interactive board game - Connect 4, Battleship, Hangman, Tic Tac Toe, Checkers - w/ video chat for grandparents to play w/ their kids. Or even my kids w/ their cousins out of state. Should have launched w/ it instead of Ntinedo Land. I'm ok w/ vid chat reserved for "Friends" only. My parents and 2 sisters all own Wii, not 1 of them has considered a Wii U. And we used Wii Speak to send messages all the time - not live, just messages. I'm not even sure Wii U can do vid messages, though maybe it can, who knows?
@russellohh - " mostly older games"
I've been playing about 160 hours of Xenoblade Chronicles on my Wii U, I always just choose "TV only". If the overworld map worked on the Gamepad - like Pikmin 3 or the upcoming XCX - then I would certainly keep it on when I played.
@chardir - "Wii Photo Channel"
Does Wii U even have a Photo Channel to use on the Gamepad? They expected us to leave our Wii and TV on all the time for the photo channel but not the TV off and the Wii u on for a Gamepad photo channel? And the Gamepad supposedly cost $100, a clock chip and some internal RAM for photos would have cost them almost nothing. And I have a lo to fbig fmaily gatherings at my home - Thanksgiving, Christmas, Father's Day, I wouldn't mind having the Wii U on then for the Gmaepad photoframe, I have my PC on just for Pandora.
@Danrenfroe2016 "a checkers hand running on the gamepad without the base station."
I forgot about the infrared, I never use it as my tv remote also turns on the surround sound. By checkers hand do you mean a 2 player checker board? That would be cool too. Or solitaire would be even better. Tablet things.
Super cool, buuuut not something I'd buy. I wish we'd get cool faceplates outside of Japan. It seems they get all the cool stuff.
This looks amazing. Too bad the standard New 3DS isn't f*cking available in North America (yet...)
0________0 Importing this!!!
This is amazing! Thinking of buying this before I get my New Nintendo 3DS!
@westman98 why Nintendo
Thanks Reggie....
I like this. A lot. Too much. That red goes really well against the white. drool...
I would definetly buy one of these if i would have new 3ds... (I have my ambassador 3ds still and not gona buy new one for bigger screen or cover plates.)
Such a disappointment that we can't get these in the U.S. - They're crazy for not releasing this here.
I'll make sure to order one for my NA New 3DS...
OH WAIT
...but i haz anime bikini girls on my 3DS. o.o
I admit, that's very cool!
It's cool, I have it now, it looks really good when you put it on a standing charger, 'cause it looks like an actual alarm clock/ornament.
