It's the week after Golden Week in Japan, which typically brings a drop-off in sales as the public holiday becomes a fading memory. With that in mind, and in the absence of new releases, the latest Media Create sales for the country bring positives for Nintendo.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition stays on top for a second week, comfortably taking the number one spot. Girls Mode 3 (Style Savvy 3) hold second place, while Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U falls back in sales yet hangs onto fourth place, likely just one week away from passing 100,000 retail sales. In fact the top 20 is dominated by games on 3DS and Wii U - only Minecraft on Vita is an exception - with three titles for the home console in the top 10. While sales numbers are generally modest, the big N will no doubt be delighted by the trend; results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition (GungHo Online Entertainment, 04/30/15) – 38,914 (218,839)
- [3DS] Girls Mode 3: Kirakira Code (Nintendo, 04/16/15) – 21,784 (120,791)

- [3DS] Assassination Classroom: Grand Siege on Koro-sensei (Bandai Namco, 03/12/15) – 3,767 (67,581)
- [3DS] Future Card Buddy Fight: Yuujou no Bakunetsu Fight! (FuRyu, 04/16/15) – 3,654 (26,948)
- [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (Nintendo, 02/14/15) – 3,608 (427,697)
- [3DS] Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 12/01/11) – 3,559 (2,502,286)
- [3DS] Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (Nintendo, 04/02/15) – 3,511 (82,403)
- [3DS] LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (Nintendo, 03/05/15) – 3,372 (46,056)
Sales are generally down or steady in hardware, with the New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) back on top. The bump that Wii U enjoyed last week has fallen away, though the system did at least stay in five figures; the results are below, with last week's sales in brackets.
- New 3DS LL – 17,875 (17,062)
- PlayStation Vita – 17,273 (17,748)
- PlayStation 4 – 15,992 (19,782)
- Wii U – 11,137 (22,898)
- New 3DS – 5,446 (5,901)
- PlayStation 3 – 4,351 (3,956)
- 3DS – 1,413 (1,520)
- 3DS LL – 1,358 (1,465)
- PlayStation Vita TV – 665 (687)
- Xbox One – 187 (341)
Some pleasing results and trends for Nintendo, and the company will no doubt hope that its marketing campaign for Splatoon in its homeland will bring more success at the end of this month.

Interesting Week for Nintendo
At this rate, Mario Kart 8 will reach 1 million in 2 weeks!
Wow. Software was Minecraft for Vita and otherwise all Nintendo.
It's great to see when Nintendo does well. Here is to their continued success!
A surprising week for Nintendo. Seriously, Mario Kart 7? Really?
AND the Wii u is headed back to dying numbers.
@Vineleaf
I just noticed that.... that is so weird....
None of those sales numbers look particularly good. But it is fascinating to see Nintendo hold all but one of the top 20 software positions.
@ikki5 I wouldn't say they are back down to dying numbers. All of the home consoles are struggling in Japan. In the last half and quarter of 2014, PS4 and Wii U were neck and neck in weekly sales figures - both hovering well below 10,000/week with Wii U even outselling PS4 a good share of that time. PS4 had a huge sales burst for about a month but it seems to have died down and both are heading to low numbers again.
Wow, beautiful dominance by Wii U and 3DS titles. Only one non Nintendo console title in the top 20. That's amazing.
@ikki5 You are joking right?
"Xbox One – 187 (341)" - THAT IS A DYING NUMBER
@Quorthon What's wrong with mario kart 7?
@ericwithcheese2 Last week was the first time Wii U was ahead of PS4 since the last but one week in December. Not exactly neck and neck. PS4 has sold 405,000 units in 2015 in Japan compared to Wii U's 180,00.
Surprising that Animal Crossing: New Leaf is still going strong. I haven't checked on my town in ages.
This game is really good "I never expected something like that" I still playing the demo over and over again
@Peach64 I was not referring to 2015, I was talking about the low numbers both systems had in the latter half of 2014. Both spent many weeks sub-10,000, and during that time frame, they were indeed very close in sales.
I didn't even notice old titles like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 7 on there. Haha. That's strange, but those are titles that can sell in small, reliable numbers well past their launch.
If a Nintendo console had gotten Minecraft Japan wouldn't even need Sony
11k copies of X and 11k Wii U. Now I really want to to know how many of those were game bundles.
So what's the outlook for Splatoon in Japan? I know they are pushing it hard, but it's a new IP on a home console. At least they only have to pay 5700 Yen for it (that's about $48 US). Doesn't look like they even have a console bundle.
New Leaf is back in the top 20? Yeesh, that game has some major legs in Japan.
@Peach64 Although the PS4 had a huge sales explosion in 2015, and I suspect that of the two systems, it will be the one to have continuous sales bumps where as the Wii U will stay level at low numbers simply because of the barren release schedule.
@ShanaUnite I don't think @Quorthon is commenting on the quality of Mario Kart 7, just surprise that a nearly four year old game has creeped back into the top 20.
@XCWarrior
To be fair, XBone is already dead in Japan. What you see with those numbers are a bunch of rogue Zombie boxes being sold.
@ericwithcheese2 The PS4 has been dominating the Wii U there or a long time now, there was a week or two at Christmas where the Wii U outsold the PS4, that's it.
@XCWarrior
Yes but the difference here is, the Xbox One has the rest of the world to make up for it. The Wii U doesn't so yes, it is going back to dying numbers.
@Tazcat2011 I still play Animal Crossing everyday. I bet I'm almost the only one. haha
50K Wii Us on Splatoon week!
Nintendo could fart into empty game cases, name it Super Mario Fart Edition & people would still lap it up.
Those old Nintendo games sure have leg. Quite interesting that Vita and PS4 titles that dominating the chart a couple of week ago are now gone.
For those wondering how Splatoon is going in Japan, I think I see them on top of Amazon Japan chart consistently a few times I checked since the global testfire. It'll do fine.
@ShanaUnite he is gutted that it is outselling anything on PS4
Hmm, a lot of that looks like New 3DS and Wii U owners picking up back catalogue games.
I'm kinda tempted guys. Will I buy puzzles and dragons? Anyone bought it and still playing it a week later?
The difference between different consoles sales numbers are marginal at best. From Vita to 3DS to PS4 to Wii U, the difference is only a matter of a few thou. I don't see any platform "dominating", not even 3DS.
Quite impressed that mario party has shown the stamina it has.a positive week for the big N overall I can see there being another puzzles n dragon tie in down the line if it keeps up the good sales.hopefully some more back catalogue games pick up sales from the new buyers.
Tried the demo, didn't impressed me at all. Puzzle Quest is better.
Glad to see Xenoblade is still doing well.
Japan just doesnt care about gaming this generation (except 3DS) :/ kinda sad to see.
The demo is pretty good, this looks like a fun game!
At first it looked like one of those specifically Nintendo only charts. Even though none of the sells were too grand, its just really cool to see the complete Nintendo dominance for the week. Unfortunately the Wii U had quite the drop. I was hoping it would have another week beating out the PS4, but at least it didn't go back to the 7k range.
The global testfire demo phases had a lot of Japanese players trying it out. It has that sort of simple niche appeal that can really hit off well there. I'm just curious as to what its preorder numbers in the US looks like especially with the very weak advertising to the general populous.
