We've been told, by some, that the term 'fan service' can have a negative meaning. Well, we beg to differ, and the Majora's Mask Pack in Hyrule Warriors is unrepentant, in-your-face fan service - and we love it.
Out today in Europe and Japan - it'll be in next week's Download Update for North America - is that very pack, along with an update to version 1.0.5 for the game itself. To start with the important behind-the-scenes stuff, below is the content of the update that'll help extend the life of the game and accommodate the extra gameplay.
- Maximum level increased
- New mixing materials
- New medals
- New weapon skills
- Updated Junk Store – "Skills Cancellation," "Skills Advice," and "Weapons Sale" added
- Updated Adventure Mode information screen – "Damage Taken" and "Retry from the Beginning" added
That's all very nice, but below is what we can get in the Majora's Mask pack:
- New character: Young Link – A boy able to use the power of the demon's mask. He fights nimbly and heroically with his sword. When wearing the demon's mask, he takes its shape and his attacks are strengthened. This power is beyond human understanding, and he will not stop attacking until all of his enemies are destroyed.
- New character: Tingle – A 35 year-old bachelor and the reincarnation of a fairy. He uses a balloon to freely jump around the battlefield and blow away enemies. His ability to do things like dodge and attack at the same time make him hard to predict and a force to be reckoned with.
- New Adventure Mode map: Termina Map – In a world where the moon falls moment by moment, you can make free use of mysterious item cards that hold new powers while advancing through your adventure. As a new reward, you can earn some new rank weapons, as well as costumes.
- New costumes: "Memories of Time" – Three costumes: "Skull Kid Style" for Lana, and "Ocarina of Time Style" costumes for Impa and Shiek.
While the previous packs have been fun, the imminent arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D and the uniqueness of that series entry makes this a stand-out set of DLC, at least in this humble writer's opinion.

Toon Link, Please!!
This is the less interesting DLC pack so far.
Ok, 8 bit great fairy is awesome.
Pretty poor pack. Another version of a character we already have, and my least favourite Zelda character.
@RainbowGazelle Complaints -_-
As a fan of Tingle, I think this is fantastic
Tingle!
Was just playing this w/ my son, forgot how fun it was. Looking forward to this. Then 1 more DLC to go for "Boss mode".
I get a tingle up my leg every time I think about this coming next week.
I will start the game after we get this. I would also like a Pro Controller for co op. It is the dumbest idea to have a button masher like this assign you the main attack button to a waggle if you use a wiimote + chuck, with no way of changing it.
Tingle alone might get me to buy this game :3
@Randomname19
I kind of agree, but considering the last one had Twili Midna (one of my favorite characters ever) vs. Tingle (meh) and Young Link (meh) I guess that's not a huge surprise :3
I am very excited to use Tingle. He is my favorite character from Wind Waker (haven't played MM yet).
@Tobias95 Wait, there are fans of Tingle? They exist? Nah, just kidding! He actually looks very fun to play as, and using the Fierce Deity Mask for Young Link is an inspired idea!
It is a shame V1.5 has made the loading times on the levels twice as long.
Some people think it is artificially extended so that the full loading animation is seen but IIRC just idling on a done loading screen did that anyway.
I'd really like a media outlet cough Nintenodlife cough to try and find out if this a bug in the patch or an intended feature. That would be typical intended "feature"; a 2 minute mission now takes 35 seconds to load as opposed to 15...
If I could go back to v1.4, I would but now going back means v1.0...
I'm looking forward to trying this next week. Also I thought the version is 1.5.0 instead of 1.0.5...
@Starwolf_UK Do you have the physical or digital copy? I have physical and have noticed the increased loading times.
@Grumblevolcano I have the digital version, as do a couple of my friends, and can honestly say, have not noticed ANY increase li loading times. If there really is, it may come down to having a physical copy, what kind of storage device you are using (internal, flash drive or hard drive). Personallly, I use a Toshiba 2TB external hard drive, and it works flawlessly.
@Grumblevolcano I have a digital copy. I've tried internal and USB storage. Both have the same problem.
@akaDv8R So you would say the loading time you experience now, on patch 1.5 is the exact same as this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI909IRRxBM
That was my experience before 1.5...
@Kasplat I've been putting off buying this for a while but Tingle And Young Link have me convinced. I was completely expecting Skull Kid or Happy Mask Salesman like everyone else, but this'll do.
Before all these DLC are done with, my only suggestion is one more level of badges, at least for defense. Or at least a final level cap of 250-300 so that Hero mode will be easier to get Gold A ranks on. The damage taken is appropriate, but painful. Everything else I'm happy with. Was hoping for Happy Mask instead of Tingle, but he'll grow on me.
Any chance to sell Wii U gamepads standalone in the future? Our Wii U was sold as new with the WW HD bundle, but actually used with a previous user already registered. Our stick, two years later, likes to move characters to the left randomly. Some games can only be played with the Gamepad. Not really fair to have to drop hundreds for just another controller.
I can't wait to play as Tingle... What? Hey, I think Tingle's hilarious!
@Aya i Think you can sent it off for repers some ppl have mentiond a Quick fix to the sticks auto moving but i cant recall what thay sed. it may be worth looking at the Foroomes or somthing
We have been playing this a fair bit but holy moly, the highest character we have levelled up is Link and he's on level 52. Most of my characters are level 35ish. This makes it really difficult, we are still attempting to get the Skuktullas. I will say though, you cannot complain about the amount of content, this game is enormous!!
@Randomname19
same for me, i welcome all the more content none the less, but tingle was a not hype worthy for me. Well lets see what the 2 new game modes brings us next round.
I have been sucked into other things but may have to come back and give this a whirl when it comes to NA. I am amazed at how may hours I put into HR, and only stepped away because of other games.
That said, I am still shocked Skull Kid didn't make it as a playable character.
Approaching 200 hours on the game, and we only just finished the first two Adventure maps and moved on to TP. Problem is there's a HUGE difficulty leap between Master Quest and TP, and now we're facing down a buttload of grinding to stand a chance there. Unfortunate side-effect of using co-op for the whole game, which makes things easier so you grind as you go less. Many of our characters are still around level 70, which is NO GOOD on TP, let alone MM I'm sure.
Also...anybody know if the title update will hit before the pointlessly delayed DLC in America? I wanna delete some skills, dangit!
I still hope for a "Link to the Past" and "Link Between Worlds" dlc pack. One Dynasty Warriors spin off game I wish can happen would be Mega Man: Robot Warriors which let's you play as Mega Man, Protoman, Bass, Duo, Roll and the Robot Masters throughout the classic series.
What do people think are the odds of a Season 2 of DLC? I want more, more, more! This time more obscure titles like the Oracle games, plus we missed Wind Waker (apart from one weapon).
Wow that looks awesome! Can't wait to play this next week in Canada. Hyrule Warriors was such a surprise game for me. I was worried I wouldn't like it when I bought on release day. Then it turned out to the most amazing fun game ever.
I would also love to see more DLC beyond what they already plan to release. I would pay for a 2nd Season.
I'm still playing the main game so I'm not able to use Adventure Mode yet, but I'm surprised I can't see the new characters. Previous packs downloaded and installed automatically, but this time all I saw when I started the game was the new version additions - are th version upgrade and DLC two different things? Is it possible only one installed and I need to manually install the other or are these unlocks only available after I complete the main game?
Oh and yes I did confirm I bought the season pass - Majora's Mask update shows as purchased in the eShop.
The amount of content this game already has is amazing. Adding yet another adventure map sounds great.
@Sean_Aaron I'd like to know this aswell. I got the update notes like level cap raised etc. but I can't select the Majoras Mask Adventure map or pick one of the new characters.
Are there longer loading times for other maps now too? I only played Termina map with my friend. At least I could read the latest Donald Duck comics while waiting for it to load.
Cynical rating over 9000 in my post, be warned.
This is DLC based on the worst game in the franchise that's in a game that celebrates the two worst Zelda games (skyward and twilight) in the recent years.
The amount of bad piled on top of bad is astonishing. I can only hope Zelda U takes a different route.
I too have noticed a doubling in the loading time. Thought I was just imagining it.
I haven't had a chance to try Young Link or Tingle, but playing as OoT Impa is probably one of the coolest things ever.
@OneBagTravel And I loved Twilight Princess. Skyward Sword has moments of brilliance, too (but I agree that it was a weak entry).
Tecmo Koei really have done an amazing job with this game. The DLC has added tons of features on an already packed game. I just wish it was possible to run a campaign with Link, Zelda, Sheik, Impa and Ganondorf in their OoT costumes at the same time.
@MajinSoul looks like the first launch only installs the update; second one installs the DLC. I got the message "purchase installed" today and then the usual stuff about the Majora's Mask add on.
