In a decision that's sure to excite stamp collectors and gamers alike, the Irish Postal Service has recently issued a retro-themed collection of postage stamps that feature some of the most recognizable characters from gaming history. The 'Game Icons' series pays tribute to the industry's colourful past with some very familiar faces.
Designed by Dublin-based studio Zinc Design Consultants, the four stamps represent arcade classics Pac-Man and Space Invaders, as well as the legendary Mario and Sonic.
These cluichí íocónacha (to slip ''as gaeilge'' for a moment), are available for 68c each, or for just under €3.00 if you want all four. Collectors can buy them online right here, and may opt to get either a full sheetlet or a first day cover to keep them nice and presentable — they can be shipped worldwide.
Whether or not slapping a blue hedgehog on an envelope will help deliver the mail any faster is yet to be tested, but it's certainly an appealing collection and a rather nice gesture of recognition from the Emerald Isle.

Why are the Mario and Sonic stamps pictures of the characters while the Space Invaders and Pac-Man stamps are game screens? Seems a bit odd. Still cool though.
Why does the U.S. have to be so boring? I seen stamps from a lot of other countries and ours are the most bland.
@WalupeachyTime Because Pac-Man and Space Invaders are thought of as singular games in the minds of non-gamers but Sonic and Mario are recognized as characters from a series of games?
Because only the "original" Pac-Man and Space Invaders are iconic like Sonic and Mario?
Because... who cares!? Didn't seem odd to me.
Purchased!
I'm Irish and a Nintendo fan, This is great.
I hope these don't end up like the inverted jenny...
I hope they do sell them at the local post office. I rather not have to buy them online if I know I can just buy them locally.
How often do you get Irish news about anything VG related? Good for them, they can have something the rest of us gamers can covet.
Awesome! This reminds me of another collection France got in 2005, though the stamps definitely had a more "kiddy" look to them. Some of those were still pretty nice (here's what they looked like).
@shaneoh i can agree being from ireland. here it normally sucks for game things
Why is this weird? It's about time someone made these, now if only they could come to America
@Mega719 the weird part is that it's in ireland seeing as the only thing that is played here is FIFA
@GuyWithTheGames well someone had to make them
@GuyWithTheGames Then my friend and me must be in the minority since we don't play FIFA. :3
Nice! I'm from Northern Ireland but I reckon I could get these easy enough!
Sweet, that almost makes up for producing my Irish acquaintance who also happens to be one of most intellectually stunted people in history... almost!
Wow this is really cool. Will definitely try to pick these up next time I'm at the post office.
I wonder if they'll be sold all over Ireland or just Dublin....
@Waann Not knowing a French edutainment character (Adibou) makes me feel culturally ignorant.
Blast Processing the postal service, I see.
Cheers for the heads up , just purchased , €1.00 postage to the UK
@Starwolf_UK To be honest, I think most French people aren't familiar with him either. It's like those responsible for the collection said "Hey, can't we put some more French characters in there? We've got Rayman, Rayman's good, who else?" "Errrrr..."
Totally ordered these last night. X2.
Good for us
@BarryDunne lol, yes do a review of the stamps when you get them dude.
Nice! Hopefully I will find them on my postal pieces someday, though I won't hold my breath.
