Hyrule Warriors was released in North America today, but the limited edition was for an undisclosed reason only available in the Nintendo World Store in New York. This peculiar move caused eager fans to queue through the night in order to have a chance at owning a copy.
Copies were so limited that staff handed out wristbands to those in the queue in order to prevent disappointment for those who arrived later than others. Unfortunately there was a small excess of wristbands meaning certain unlucky individuals were forced to buy the standard edition instead.
Demand is so high for this version of the game that copies on eBay have bids of hundreds of dollars already, and many copies are listed with a buy-it-now price of hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
Nintendo's decision to limit the release only to one shop is even stranger when considered that distribution throughout the UK and Japan has been more typical, being available from most larger retailers.
Would you go to such extremes for that coveted blue scarf? Let us know in the comments section below.

I got the Mario Kart 8 limited edition that was limited to 350 copies or whatever, but I was able to have a fellow member of a Nintendo fansite preorder it for me because he lived in New York City. They didn't allow preorders for this game so I was unable to get a copy this time.
If I could score it on eBay for $300 or less I would buy it, but these people are trying to charge $1000 for a buy it now price, even starting bids around the $500 mark. That's just insane.
I would have liked it, but it would have been cheaper for me to buy it for more than $1000 on eBay than travel to NYC.
Why it had to be an exclusive thing with just a few copies to only one single store on the entire American continent? If you had made this LE available for the entire region, the game will probably sold 10x more, NOA! What is your problem, Reggie!? NoA is the true definition of dissapointment in terms of Limited Editions and exclusive things. Let's not even talk about the Bayonetta LE that is coming exclusively to Europe...........
I'm sorry, but that is just sad.
It's not even that good of a scarf and the game itself isn't amazing either.
Maybe next time they should have some small quantites of Limited Editions at Gamestops if the Nintendo World Store is sold out of copies. I'm pretty sure that would at least please some people.
@Nik-Davies Providing they don't open it and keep it as new I'm sure it will be worth a fair few bob some years from now.As much as $1000 though?I'm not too sure
They should make xenoblade X a gamestop exclusive again so things like that can happen all over again.
Nintendo shouldn't do things like this. If people are willing to pay lots of money for something, they should make it available.
I just got the normal version. I don't like scarfs anyway. Also, I live a few hundred miles away from the Nintendo World Store, so getting it wasn't an option anyways.
I have since it's only a train ride away. Short answer, epic fail. I think you would of have to be on line before 3:30 am to get a LE copy. Too bad I made it at 5:30 am on a holiday. I guess there always the imitation Cosplay scarf on eBay I can get for $25+.
All of that for the scarf when the game, the most important thing, is easy to find and with the standard price plus a costume pack for free?!?!?!?!

Got my limited edition with the scarf on launch day in the post in the UK. I wouldn't have queued at midnight just for that though.
sad so sad
Wait, are we just talking about the version with the scarf? Seriously?!
MAYBE I'd get it if we were talking about this, but evidently that better bundle is Japan-only... I hope noone is actually buying this game with a scarf for $1000.
Do away with limited editions. Problem solved. And maybe then people will buy more games with that money rather than wasting a grip on one game with happy meal-quality throw-ins.
Not to mention those hours of their lives they cannot get back...
@JaxonH I think they had more then double that with Mario kart 8 since people who arrived an hour before sell was able to get a wristband and trust me it was more wristband then Hyrule Warriors.
I mentioned this to my wife and she was completely dumbfounded that people would be that desperate for something you could make better yourself. She's disappointed we didn't have the foresight to get her churning high quality versions out of the workshop...
Opportunity lost.
"copies on eBay have bids of hundreds of dollars already, and many copies are listed with a buy-it-now price of hundred and even thousands of dollars"
Freaking scalpers.
It's garbage that people have to go to such lengths in the first place. If America wasn't treated like the redheaded stepchild with these kinds of things, then the consumer wouldn't feel so jilted.
Clean your house, NOA. Stop insulting your consumers.
Meh
Honestly this was ridiculous Nintendo World Store shoul have had more copies of the Limited Edition elsewhere to be fair to others an giving everyone an equal shot to get it other than this insult to their core fans.
Insanity. Great game though.
Lol. You can get the Japanese game, the Triforce Clock, the Scarf, an the Chest for $400.... while it's $1000 just for the scarf and game.
Couldn't you guys just buy from Amazon Europe if you want the scarf? I don't think you'll pay 500$ (not sure about the import tax).
I preordered my copy with the scarf and it is a good scarf but I wouldn't say that it's worth as much as people are paying for it on eBay. Although it could be terrible for all I know as I only got to have it for 5 minutes before it had to go away for Christmas.
NOA is dropping the ball when it comes to releasing a lot of things. A whole bunch of stuff has passed us by here. Not to mention that we have nothing worth having in the Nintendo Club rewards section. I'm starting to fear that my points will expire before I get around to getting anything. For a little context we have four whole rewards. Two of which are different post cards. It is pretty sad. I just don't think NOA cares for either shipping things or maybe the money behind getting all these things made. It might just not be worth it but it makes us in the Americas region kind of envious of all the other regions.
I don't think it would have been all that difficult to get these into all the stores. It seems they were not very confident that this product would sell. Oh well I don't f'ing like scarfs anyways.
@XenobladeFan12
Ninja'd
Just because it's listed at that price on eBay doesn't mean someone is going to pay for it.
As I have said before, NOA takes the "Limited" part way too seriously.
Thankfully I am getting this one when its price lowers, so no big loss.
I got mine, just dont ask how...the scars are still too deep.
@Drawdler Yep, even if I don't have a Japanese Wii U, that is still preferable assuming that I would want a Zelda scarf and all of the goodies that the treasure box had.
I just wanted the game to have all of the preorder costumes (excluding DLC is okay) from the get go, no jumping through hoops for that and I would desire it more.
One day I hope to be one of those people that have more money that sense... meaning I have a ton of money
Any bets the scarf will turn up on Nintendo Stars Club.
Harule Wariors costs 44€ and special edition only 49€. I dont get the crazyness about a scarf. Game is really good but...
OK Ninty, you won this round in NY
would have liked to have the scarf but fly or drive all the way to NYC, only to wait outside for severly limited copies? no thanks.
yea , a game im crazy about i have to get the special edition and every single time its a pain in the a** and this is a prime example. That is always my main woe for the year.
I live in the UK and i just sold the scarf on eBay to someone in America for over £90 + Postage! People are crazy lol
Old Impa had not enough time to knit more scarfs...
I ordered my copy of Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition and.. well. It hasn't arrived yet. I ordered from Nintendo's UK store and I am so very annoyed. You think the worst when it hasnt arrived. Lets hope Nintendo provides a replacement, though unlikely.
The extremely limited number is perplexing, but then again, when the game barely sells anything in Japan and Nintendo has hundreds of limited editions sitting on shelves (like Wind Waker HD was like in NA), why bother making more?
It's not a Nintendo game.
It's a spin-off and not a very good one either.
Made by a company that has already put out 2-3 bad games on the Wii U.
Nintendo's got their own games to worry about.
@Xenobladefan12
And 460$ if you actually want to play the game. I get what you mean, but aside from the pictures, the strategy guide is useless to non-Japanese speakers too.
So, closer to 500$, if you want to experience everything in your native language.
Not even close to worth it (the extras are cheaply made trash and the game is just as bad).
Not even close to worth it at 60-80$.
I'd have got it to sell it.
I've got bills to pay.
The thing about it is people love to trash 'scalpers' aka resellers, but why not trash the morons willing to spend that kind of money on useless plastic crap in the first place?
If I'd liked the game and didn't think it was trolling the Zelda franchise, dragging it's rep through the mud and spitting on the polish Nintendo uses on their own titles, I'd have bought it for 80$. But it's just an uninspired, middling excuse to pander to the Zelda fans that wanted 4 copies of Ocarina of Time instead of four unique gameplay experiences.
Tecmo Koei, Koei Tecmo.. who cares.
Dynasty Warriors is like an EA sports game.
Overdone, and cheap as American fast food.
"unlucky individuals were forced to buy the standard edition instead."
I'm fairly certain no one was forced to buy anything .
Thank you for posting this. It might actually make it to Nintendo's eyes and next time something like this happens, they'll think again.
Watch the scarf show up on NAs Club Nintendo, either way I'll have the coins on standby for it lol
I should have bought the limited edition and taken the game out and then sold the box and scarf on ebay for anyone eh on has purchased the standard game for their region.
@NodesforNoids people who have played the game like it.
For me it's much better than any Zelda game, much less boring.
I don't really think it's that big of a deal
@MadAdam81
More engaging at times yes. I wouldn't call it less boring as the repetition that is inherent of this style of games becomes boring quick. Yesterday after the first hour I was falling asleep while playing. Not saying your opinion is wrong. Just don't think I feel the same way as you.
"Or buy it on eBay for ten times the price"
Isn't price-scalping illegal? If not, shouldn't it be?
I wish people would stop saying this game is not very good, because it's frikkin AWESOME!!!
As much as a fan I am of all things Zelda...a scarf?! Really? No thanks, I'm good. lol
I wanted the friggin' treasure chest and clock! But I got a scarf. (Europe)
Personally I couldn't care less about this game or it's limited edition. A mediocre game that slapped the zelda universe into the mix. Doesn't make it a masterpiece.
Great game i guess, but are you going to pay this much for a scarf? People get a life. You can not take it with you when you leave this life. You all know that? STop throwing money!
The scarf would be nice to put on my wall next to my LoZ posters, but it isnt something I need in any way.
It would have cost me £18 more to get the Scarf edition than the regular and I have never paid £18 for a scarf and even then I would never have worn it, so if you pay $1000 for this then you have way more money than sense. Even $100 is a bit steep.
I see this as a true limited edition copy! Not everyone can get it, thats what it means to be limited. Disappointed about how truly limited it is but I still get to play the game so oh well
Too many people with too much money to spend. This limited edition was handled poorly. Just like the upcoming US Pokemon wifi events. Canadians like games too. Damn Nintendo.
Haha if i had a limited edition, i'd immediatly sell it to buy the regular edition. Then i'd have the money to buy a poopoodoodoocacapoopledoopleload of upcoming wiiu games while laughing at the people who paid 10 times too much. There should be more people like that for this reason alone. Very kind to give someone that kind of money for nothing.
Is the scarf the only part thats limited edition? is there a steelbook case? an artbook? cd? because frankly the scarf and the cardboard box just don't make this worth it. Nintendo you could have still made it limited by releasing a limited amount throughout NA instead of only releasing it at Nintendo World. Clearly there was a market for this version, and I see it as a lost opportunity. I have the Standard version, and LOVE IT!!!
@SophWii That's strange. Have you trying calling or emailing them about it? I also bought my Hyrule Warriors Limited Edition from Nintendo UK's site and I received it early (2 days before official launch) so there must be some kind of problem with your order.
@whanvee I know I am probably in the minority finging the Warriors games more fun than Zelda, but for me the elda games have noting on all the RPGs I have played, whereas the Warriors games have so many different characters, play styles, levels, missions and being fast paced that I don't have time to be bored.
Standard edition will be fine with me since all I want to do is play it anyway
It was really dumb to have the limited edition in very short numbers for this. The limited editions for Mario Kart 8 and Zelda WW HD were in much more huge quantities since I see those gathering dust in my small hometown's brick&mortar shops shelves even now.
This was the first one that actually has something useful in the limited edition. The scarf can be used daily, but MK8 had an ugly blue shell statue and Zelda WW also had just a statue.
I would've bought the limited edition, but in Finland also one shop only sold it and apparently in VERY limited quantities.
How is it now with the costume packs, do all those three come later for sale? I suppose the master quest DLC has already one of those costume packs in it?
How about the Club Nintendo exclusive Ganondorf costume set? Is that coming as a paid DLC also?
@ToxieDogg I tried contacting them on two occasions but unfortunately I have to wait two weeks after it's expected arrival date. Which is this wednesday. And even then everyone has the game. I asked what would be the chance on getting the limited edition replaced and the lady told me it was very limited and they are unsure. Basically, I have a sneaking suspision someone in Royal Mail are being a bit sneaky.
Hmmm, it might be worth sticking my scarf on eBay and offering delivery to USA!
my Link has a scarf, though I got the game digitally
