In the last Nintendo Direct of 2013 Nintendo of Europe confirmed that Super Mario Bros. Deluxe would be part of a Nintendo Network Promotion, where anyone with a Nintendo Network ID registered on a 3DS receives the Game Boy Color game for free. The codes for that promotion are due between now and 28th February.
Despite the title being a free giveaway for millions of gamers in the region it'll also arrive as a standard download on the 3DS eShop. It already has a game page on the store, listing it for a release on 27th February, priced at £4.49 / €4.99; it'll also arrive in Australia on 28th February for AU$6.50.
At the moment there are no equivalent details for North America, while the promotion for a free copy was only in Europe. If you want some early impressions of this eShop version, be sure to check out our preview of the Japanese release.
Thanks to Scary_Old_Lady for the tip.

I would buy it, don't need it for free. Please come to NA soon!!!
Code has been received by me at least
Played this for 10 minutes today and I'll be able to complete it tomorrow when I have the time (Got up to world 5.)
Download earlier only played a bit of it loads more to play
Hope this comes to NA soon!
LOL Where the heck is SMB3 for NA?
If the eternally delayed SMB3 is anything to go by...
I received and "cashed" my code today, i still have my GBC "Super Mario bros deluxe"-cart, but a freebie is always nice!
Yay another game NOA doesn't want my money for.
not got my code yet still plenty of time
I got the download code a few hours ago and redeeming it now.
Got mine too, and redeemed it.
Yes, I've just received mine too !
I also recieved my code this morning and already redeemed it
I loved this game as a child back in the day, but playing it again, i have no idea how i could live with that zoomed in screen
I got my code and downloaded the game. My eyes can't handle the zoomed in screen XD.
Maaaaan I hope we get it too.
Where is the North American Super Mario Bros 3?!
Huh, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe you say? Sorry, wrong Mario!
Just got mine. Passing it on to my niece
Once again NA gets screwed over. Europe you are SOOOOO lucky
Received my code today!
I still hold the original as the best! It may not have the best graphics, the music is iconic but not as pleasing to the ears as the later reiterations and it's certainly not as engrossing as the others but there's something about it that just makes it so needed! I can't wait for this version, and incidentally if Nintendo would like to do a 3D-remake (similar to the Sega 3D remakes) then I'd put more money for that version too
Good memories of this GBC game... Why is Nintendo of America sucking with its VC?
I thought this was UK only, not the entirety of Europe?
Guess I'll give it a try then.
Reggie is laughing at us from his ivory tower.
Got it. Played it. Loved it! Completed it! This game is just awesome ^^
Downloaded today. Instant throwback to buying my gameboy color in '99. Taking it into science class and playing it in class (Hid it behind the big power point towers on our desks. Pokemon Blue, SMBD and All Star Baseball were regular school fillers.
@LavaTwilight That is the thing M2 or somebody could take this and fix the field of view probably pretty easily making it the ultimate version.
got code and dl it today
LoL! She's a gem.
"it'll also arrive in Australia on 28th January for AU$6.50"
@ThomasBW84 That should read 28th February.
I woke up this morning and found my code in my email inbox. I'm downloading the game as we speak! Let the nostalgia juices flow through my mind as I play this classic!
@GamerZack7 Whoops...
Got my code today. Gave it 10mins that will probably be I'll ever play.
.... it's official. The NA is getting trolled... HARD. >__>
Must be nice for Europe and Japan to get free games. I don't get why us Anericans don't get free games yet Nintendos main market is in America. We buy most of their games and consoles yet we don't get good rewards for it.
I don't know what US customers did to upset Japan... but they seem to hate us. We're still waiting for SMB 3.
"here is your code for SMB DX from nintendo europe" i didn't think nintendo of australia's PR division was THAT small! still it's a great game for free, no complaints about that. sorry america this is payback for not getting SMT4
@sleepinglion Why do you think Japan had anything to do with the delays? Its all Nintendo of America's doing.
What in the world is going on with NOA?
Still waiting to receive mine. Considering how many people already seem to have theirs, hopefully it shouldn't take too long.
Got mine, and downloading as we speak! YAY!
Got my code in this morning's email. I fondly remember playing this on my girlfriends old Gameboy.. those were the days.
Received my code via email yesterday (14/02) here in Australia.
Got my code via email! Wish multiplayer could be added into future Gameboy Virtual Console games.
MY BODY IS READY FOR THIS GAME, REGGIE.
Meanwhile, America is still waiting for Super Mario Bros. 3 to come out on both eShops. (sigh) When will you just come to your senses, Nintendo?
The calendar worked for 2014. xD
@kuribo4 I love the little calendar! :3
"Can we get the game of free too", signed, Murica
I don't understand why old games are causing such a fuss...
My jealosy and hatred at NoA levels are through the roof!
hope it comes to america
America is screwed over? Rune Factory 4 is still not coming to Europe. That's way better than a remake of a game 3DS owners got through the Ambassador program.
I hope NoA follows their lead, or at least put it on the eStore sooner rather then later. This game has been on my wish list for a while.
Received my code today & downloaded the game, cant argue for free, and its a damm good game aswell.
I understand people saying that they would rather pay for this than download it for free, I was pleased to download it. All though I thought it was like the Super Mario All Stars version, but a free game from Nintendo is not to be sniffed at. Thanks Nintendo.
I also received the code! I'll download the game in a couple of minutes!
Man, my 3DS has a massive library of games on it, even though I never get download versions when there's retail versions. Except for Donkey Kong, which I got for free earlier by registering a couple of other games. Got my first 3DS day one, so I have every free game on it I could get.
@Shambo
I'm in the same boat. My 32GB card is filling up fast, especially when I download every demo available. 14GB used and counting.
Got my code and downloaded it. I really enjoy this version, as the extras make it a 100 times more entertaining experience!
I blame Nintendo as a whole, the whole VC for both systems is totally unacceptable. Wii was the only decent VC machine. I seriously don't understand why they don't want to make money. I want all my Wii VC games upgraded to my Wii U RIGHT NOW. The system has been out forever and we barely have anything, and no N64 or Gamecube. But oh yeah let's add Gameboy Advance to the mix! Who the heck is running this ship into the ground?
I gt my free game on friday 14th Feb yeah thanks Nintendo
The download code version should be available already. At least I got it. I'd say this is perhaps even better than the NES version also downloadable on VC. You can unlock The Lost Levels in this as well, but I believe they stripped some secret levels from that, so you might still be better off just buying that separately.
Why not just release Mario All-Stars.??? £5 quid for Deluxe isn't appealing in the slightest!!!
Is the eShop out of service right now here in Europe? Damn...
@PVTAngrybird YOU guys got the Legend of Zelda Four Swords for FREE recently so I don't know what you are complaining about. Us Europeans were so annoyed at not getting that. The SMB deluxe is just Super Mario Bros with some new little things. Would much rather of had Four Swords with SMB Deluxe just being released for a price on eshop like it will be anyways. The game will come to North America anyways while we won't get Four Swords at all
I just downloaded the game and i can't wait to play it
I received my free download code yesterday! (Europe)
I didn't remember this game being so hard to play and I lofed it when i was younger. I will stick to the non zoomed in nes version I think.
Got mine 10:00 UTC 14th feb. It's a lot more difficult than I remember it being!
I really don't get the delays between regions either. It's hugely frustrating. North American users are missing out on this and SMB3, while I've been waiting over a year now for Mario Golf on the GBC to appear in Europe.
I'm in the UK and I haven't been sent my code yet =(
I was at work yesterday when I got the e-mail with the download code. I became very excited! Free stuff excitement FTW!
Still waiting for my code too, dammit Nintendo!
@C-Olimar Me too!
Got my 2 codes this morning (have 2 3ds's and thus 2 nintendo id's) and im not sure weather to redeem one or just pass on the codes to someone that will get some use out of them... i REALLY hated this game for the weird zoomed in thing they did.... if anyone wants a code i will have at least one spare as i dont need both
Nintendo Of America....you are FIRED! Mr. Krabs voice
Yet another Virtual Console title the US of A will never see.
Got mine just after Nintendo Direct aired
Got mine yesterday, great game!
My code arrived on Valentine's Day.
I love you too, Nintendo!!! <3
The boo thing is like a new game almost. I wasn't expecting that at all.
"while the promotion for a free copy was only in Europe."
There go my hopes. I watched the direct but I missed this I guess.
@ChronoPower It was if you set up a Nintendo Network id and accepted the terms and conditions before a certain date. (I made my one and only ever miiverse post to make sure it was done right).
@unrandomsam
Before January 31st, IIRC, you had to set it from a 3DS or, like me, link a WiiU one to your 3DS. So now I'm playing New Super Mario U ( got it for €19,90) and Super Mario Deluxe ( got it for nothing!) Maaaaaaaaaaaario is THE star!!!!
I'd rather have this over Four Swords to tell you the truth.
Still waiting for SMB3, but I'll take a free copy of SMBDX in the meantime should this actually come to NA...
@maggerbee: I totally agree with you and I'm utterly disgusted as well. We get 1 game a week if we're lucky. The Wii VC was okay, but not good enough in my opinion.
@KnightRider666 Not saying the Wii VC was good, just saying at least they came out with ALMOST every game I wanted to buy. The game I was most shocked to see was Bonanza Bros. on Genesis. It's one of my favorites of all time. And with the prices they are charging they really should be giving us the option to have some upgrades. You should be able to either play the game as it was originally or with some updates/graphic improvements.
i just go my code the other day XD
@maggerbee: Again I totally agree! They're making a mint off of us for what they charge.
Haven't received my code yet.
Free game is free!
I have the code but I will play the NES one I've got with amabassdor for the better experience.
but for those who doesn't.. once again, FREE SUPER MARIO BROS.!!!
that should be enough.
@khululy Still worth playing the boo racing levels as it is nothing like the original. (Or the lost levels if you don't have another copy of that).
I already received the code and downloaded the game.
I never played this version before, it has save option and challenges that are a very nice addition to the original. But the screens goes funny a lot of times both horizontally and vertically (it can be very annoying), I guess it is due to the small screen of the original Gameboy where it was release. Sad they didn´t fix it. for this VC release. It was free for me so I shouldn´t complain much about it but it is still a problem that I wanted to mention.
@bezerker99 Yeah,I'd buy it too...I also hope it comes to NA soon
Finally got an email with the code today...
Actually there were two codes for some reason but I can only use one.
It has the option to print so I assume that this was when the game boy printer was still around !!
