Update: Nintendo's Official UK Store has some discounts live on various sets, plus a deal where you can bag yourself a free LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise Expansion Set when you spend over £65. Check out the offers below.
The union that kids (and big kids) have wanted for so long finally came to pass with Super Mario available in LEGO form. Typically for Nintendo, the LEGO Super Mario sets are more than just standard LEGO sets - they are connected via a neat touch of technology that enables you to build Mario courses and 'run' them like you do in the plumber's video games (you can find out more about how they came to be in our interview with the project's lead designer).
The first wave of sets released on 1st August 2020, and since then they've been joined by a host of add-on sets of all shapes and sizes, as well as the incredible LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System (which also interacts with the LEGO Mario figure). Nintendo has also announced that new sets and character packs are on the way in 2021.
LEGO Mario himself has little LCD screens powered by two AAA batteries that react to movement, colour and certain special bricks. His eyes, mouth and belly react to these inputs and a tiny speaker in the figure adds trademark sounds and musical phrases from the series, too.
We've scoured the web and tracked down the best options for the Starter Set, Expansion Sets, and assorted goodies in the UK and US. We'll update this article with more options as we find them, so be sure to check back.

In addition to some discounts, Nintendo's Official UK Store currently has a deal running where you can get a free LEGO Super Mario Super Mushroom Surprise Expansion Set when you spend over £65 — not bad if you're hunting for stocking fillers.
What LEGO Super Mario sets are available?
As you can see above, there are plenty of sets to choose from, but you'll have a tough time getting the most out of them without the base set — the Starter Course — which can be combined with a growing number of Expansion Sets. Each one unlocks "unique challenges and characters to play with and against friends", according to the official PR. All sets are modular and give the builder the opportunity to mix and match to create whatever Mario course they wish to.
The 231-piece Starter Course Set retails for $59.99 / 59,99 € / £49.99.
The first round of announced Expansion Sets included the following (pictured above):
- Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set
- Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set
The full line up of Expansion Sets, Power-Up Packs and Character Packs now includes:
- Guarded Fortress Expansion Set
- Desert Pokey Expansion Set
- Whomp’s Lava Trouble Expansion Set
- Boomer Bill Barrage Expansion Set

- Toad’s Treasure Hunt Expansion Set

- Propeller Mario Power-Up Pack
- Cat Mario Power-Up Pack
- Builder Mario Power-Up Pack
- Thwomp Drop Expansion Set
- King Boo and the Haunted Yard Expansion Set

Lego has a bigger gift pack than Zavvi.
Considering the size of the sets those prices are pretty high, but I didn't expect them to be cheap.
Is there a place in Australia to preorder?
@Baker1000 they are going to be more when they all sell out!
@Woodyshoe Shoot, it's a preorder bonus... now im I have to preorder it
Lego is always expensive. I wouldn't expect otherwise for a Nintendo ip.
I still think the set looks really weird.
@Alpha008 You can preorder the starter kit from Lego's Australian site for $90. It also includes the Monty Mole expansion as a pre-order bonus. You can get it here.
@TheAwesomeBowser Thankyou!
@Desa What's your profile pic from?
The free gifts @ Lego are out of stock and on back orders already.
I've pre-ordered via Zavvi.
Mario Duplo more like
Happy tor those that will enjoy them, but I can live without these.
£90 for the Bowser set!!
@Pj1 The official lego store has a far better pre-order bonus so I would suggest getting from there for the same price. Annoyingly the price is one penny away from free delivery so treat yourself to a minifig while you're at it in order to qualify.
They're not legos. They've been bastardized 😂😂😂
Definitely pre-order from Lego given the bonus being offered.
They are pricey - and Lego is pricey to start with, though you're paying for quality - but I'd be confident (as we see with other licensed Lego stuff, such as Star Wars and Marvel) that there's an 'Nintendo tax' on here - Lego's own ranges such as Creator and Ninjago tend to be much better value for money.
With the Mario figure stuck full of components such as a QR reader (or whatever does that) and some LCD screens you're bumping up the price too - and then you have new molds for certain pieces on top of that, and new printed pieces (PLEASE don't be stickers!) on that too. All adds up!
I'm still waiting for a Mario/Nintendo TECHNIC set.
£50...... for that....... fml
Preordered mine at lego.com and got a free expansion for ot
I want the Mario but could care less about Legos.
These are cool, but I was hoping for something more basic. This is a cool toy, but it's not Lego: it's a play set.
Again, I think it's cool, and there's definitely a market for this. I personally won't buy it, but I might buy some basic Mario or Zelda themed sets. You know, for my kids.
I'm glad I preordered from lego when they went live.they are done taking preorders now
Looks like UK Lego store has stopped pre-orders too, did not see any mention of free gifts when I looked yesterday, wish I had pre-ordered now although am in two minds about getting it
Looks like some of you are going to buy it...
@noswitchbutidc
It's from Digimon season 3.
These are very ugly sets. In my opinion they don’t look right.
@Desa It's cute!
Does the uk lego store have any pre order bonus at least the Monty mole?
@mr_benn it's pre put on stickers :/
now, when and where can we start per-ordering the expansion and power-up packs?
hopefully, there will be a Lego DLC pack for Super Mario Maker 2.
Where does it say you get a gift with pre order. Everywhere I look it says nothing about a gift
Is the monty mole preorder sold out? Can't find it on the Lego Store any more
I really don't like the look nor the premise. But ah well, can't have it all.
On a slightly related note, I bought the Monopoly Gamer Mario Kart game and also found an additional character pack and that game really does it right. It looks cool, makes sense and is fun to play too. Way faster than regular Monopoly too.
I'm not spending £50 on something I'm unlikely to play with! I would never do that! (looks at multiformat multigenerational gaming backlog of barely touched games, many of which cost £40-£50).
Preordered mine back in April
Although it's somewhat growing on me, I still don't really like the looks, and the idea doesn't fully appeal to me. But hey, I don't really DON'T want it, just won't get it, and if people enjoy it, and no one gets harmed, who am I to judge? We've had plenty of LEGO video games, and now video game LEGO's. Even movies from games from toys from movies. And now there's a LEGO set of a TV and game console, that one DOES appeal to me, but not its price tag...
Interesting collaboration and kind of cool. Love lego and Nintendo but this collection doesn't grab me at all. Not just because of the price either.
Enjoy them whoever wants to purchase them
Nintendo online store has literally loads of them... to the point that I question how successful it's been.
LEGO is notorious for running out of stock - they have long lead times on making the bricks, but also have a limited capacity on making them too - not just by brick type either, just getting to use the machinery involved - especially this time of year!
So either Nintendo crystal balled their orders to perfection, or stock is selling slow.
I finally caved last week and just got the starter set for the Mario figure to go with the NES. I have to say it's pretty nifty, but I'm probably not grabbing the rest of the sets. Unless Bowser's Castle goes on clearance for cheap at my store, then I might grab that one.
China has already copied the lego nes, picked one up for £100 and it's perfect. Recommend if the official price tag is putting you off...
Currently, only the NES is interesting to me. I like to display my Lego, and that game stuff just doesn't look good for the price. Maybe if they sold the characters separately. There are some great Nintendo/Lego Mocs out there, but they decided to go for a nonsense board game
Even more than any of the expansion sets, those character packs contain the quintessential charm of Lego and Nintendo put together!
