Super Mario RPG: How To Defeat Claymorton

Super Mario RPG is all about collecting the Seven Stars, and you'll be getting your first one very soon. You just need to save the Mushroom Kingdom from Claymorton — formerly known as Mack. Claymorton is the first real challenge in Super Mario RPG, but with a second party member and healing spells on hand, you should have the might you need to win.

How to defeat Claymorton / Mack

Recommended party: Mario, Mallow

The first member of Smithy's Gang — whoever that is — that you fight, Claymorton is accompanied by four Bodyguards. If you stocked up on Mushrooms and Honey Syrups, you shouldn't struggle with this fight.

You should focus Mario’s attacks on Claymorton and use Mallow’s Thunderbolt spell, which should take out the Bodyguards all at once. If you’re lucky, Thunderbolt will stun Claymorton and prevent him from attacking for a turn.

When Claymorton does attack, he’ll use a Flame spell or a Flame Wall spell; both deal minor damage to your party, so just heal with Mushrooms when necessary. Keep attacking and he’ll go down in no time.

If you have trouble defeating all four Bodyguards at once with Thunderbolt, you might want to spend a little while longer leveling up. If the Shysters are still alive after beating Claymorton, then finish them off.
