The ability to play a 96 track race is an option introduced in update 4.0.0 of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

The patch - which added support for various Switch 2-specific features, including clearer visuals, reduced loading times and support for up to eight players beyond the standard four - also added a few extras for those playing on the original Switch, such as a 96 track race setting.

The only real requirement to being able to run a 96 track race is you need to have purchased the 'Booster Course Pass', which adds 48 extra tracks to the base game.

Otherwise, you need to have updated the game to version 4.0.0 or higher. There's also no need to play the Switch 2 version of the game - the 96 race option is available for the original Switch as well.

Finally, less of a requirement and more of a PSA: a 96 race is only possible in VS Mode in either Single Player or Multiplayer, but not online play.

How To Set Up A 96 Track Race In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Here's how to play all 96 tracks in a row, starting from the main menu:

1. Select 'Single Player' or 'Multiplayer'
2. Select 'VS Race'
3. Confirm your controller(s) if you're playing in multiplayer, then select characters / karts
4. Select '96 Races' at the bottom 'Races' option

While you are here, make sure you select everything exactly to your liking - such as whether the tracks play in order, at random, or at your choosing - plus the CPU and Item settings. This is important because you don't want to get part way through the marathon session and realise things aren't quite right.
