Topic: Wanting to get back into Nintendo, last console was the N64, need some advice?

Hi there,

The other day I came to the horrible realisation that I have missed out on a hell of a lot of good games that are exclusive to Nintendo, this made me feel a bit crappy . I have a 3DS but the last Nintendo console that I owned was the N64 . I've done a fair amount of research and I'm interested in GC, Wii and Wii U games. (I have missed out on alot!). Therefore what would be the best course of action with the NX on the distant horizon? Would it be wise to get an original Wii with backwards compatibility of the GC and also pick up a Wii U? I'm somewhat drawn to Xenoblade C X ^_^

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

I would personally wait to hear about the backwards compatibility of the NX console. If it turns out it's compatible with Wii U but not Wii, then you could get an original Wii and and NX, and be completely covered on all systems you've missed.

Yeah, basically what Nicolai said. I'd recommend waiting and see what the NX is.

I'd probably pick up a Wii if I were you, and make sure it's one that supports the GameCube, not a later model that moved on from backwards compatibility. That way you can scrap in the GCN compatibility and a Wii is fairly cheap, in fact usually cheaper or right around the same price as a used GameCube. (At least so I've seen)
Wii games are usually cheap as well, GameCube is iffy depending on what you're looking for but can be cheap too. While I'm not a fan of WiiWare, you'll still have access to that and all the lovely Virtual Console for sale in the Wii Shop Channel, but besides that all the wifi except a couple of janky third party games (like I think GoldenEye is still on but hacked to death), are turned off. Meaning no online for Mario Kart Wii or anything like that.
I recommend getting a WiiU still, since it's the current system. The only downside for you is that there's no GameCube support at all (besides the controller with Smash Bros), and no downloadable GCN titles. But there are more than enough games to justify buying it and you'll easily spend a year or two playing it if you paid it special attention and actually play the games, there are also plenty of amazing downloadable games in the WiiU eShop. Lots of new and repeated virtual console from the Wii, as well as several Wii games that became downloadable. Downloading some Wii games to a WiiU will save you money on finding the physical version on at least a few of the games. Everything has online still, the only thing that's even been turned off (or will be) is Mario Kart TV which is a useless add on to Mario Kart 8. As for the NX, there's no way to really tell when the NX is actually going to come even with everyone flipping out saying it'll be here by later this year, and there's no way to tell if it'll support the WiiU games either, although it's probably safe to bet that it will. So it's something to keep in mind, you'll probably have another chance to delve into the WiiU library with the NX, but the online will likely be barren and there will be little action going on anywhere with it by then. Probably.
Don't forget if you do get a Wii for GCN games, you'll still need a GCN memory card to save your games, and you should be fine with internal memory for the Wii, unless you plan on getting a lot of WiiWare. I have a 1GB SD card but it's basically useless aside from backup, since the internal memory had enough for my games since I only ever got a bunch of virtual console and saved my Wii game saves to it. The WiiU will probably need an HDD if you end up downloading a lot though, 32GB will dry up fast with installation updates and downloaded games. They've given away games bigger than 8GB before, which was more than the 8GB WiiU basic model could hold, which is discontinued now, but you can still find used. I'd stay away from that model because of the internal memory.

I didn't know Mario Kart TV was going to be discontinued. I wonder if all your saved videos will be deleted after that.

@Rexcalibr: It's not, not announced anyway. Just a supplementary website that few people know about, let alone use.

@OrangutanSamurai
Wii U can run GameCube games if you're prepared to interfere with the software on the virtual Wii part of it, but it can't read GC discs so you'd need to copy the discs to PC and use the image files. If I were making the decision myself, and wasn't out to own a piece of hardware from each generation, then I'd just get a Wii U - the gamepad is the best controller out there, if for no other reason than it's got off-tv play, then mod it to run GameCube games and you've got 3 generations in one place. That then saves you the wait and the pressure of having to buy the NX at launch (assuming it is even backwards compatible), or wait even longer until the NX is a bit more established.

Mario Kart TV is not discontinued. It will still exist in the game.

Get a Wii that has GC backwards compatibility and wait until the NX to get the Wii U. There's very little on the Wii U that's worth buying.

Best bet is to decide which libraries you are most interested in 1. Wii/Gamecube 2. Wii U/Wii

I would suggest Wii U since it also offers some Wii games digitally and many gamecube titles had re-releases on Wii (prime trilogy, Pikmin, Resident Evil, etc) or even Wii U with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Mario Kart TV is not shut off yet, but it will be, just a simple Google search will turn up many recent articles on the matter. If you had read what I said, I said "or will be" in terms of it being shut off, and that I said it was the extra not the game good lord.
Lol she deleted her post. Thank yoooooou.

i would not recommend waiting around for the NX. considering you have missed out on so much goodness and you want to get into the old systems i don't know why people are saying wait for a new one, lol.

yes, a cheap second hand Wii is pretty cost effective as you can play all Wii and Gamecube games on it. if you really love HD and have a big HDTV you want to experience good graphics on the Wii U might be a better choice, you'll still have access to all Wii games.
