Topic: If my Wii U were to stop working, could I still load a game save from a USB memory card on a working Wii U?

I am currently playing Breath Of The Wild for my Wii U and have made quite a bit of progress. Because of that, it would be horrible if my Wii U were to stop working since I would have to start all over again. Because of that, I have been making backups of my BOTW game save to a USB memory card. Well, I have been reading recently that if my Wii U were to stop working and I were to get another Wii U, I would not be able to load my game save from the memory card. So, I have a few questions regarding this.

1. Is this in fact true?

2. If is true, is there any other way that I would be able to continue my game from my save spot on the memory card?

3. If the hard drive survived, could I take that out and put it in a working Wii U and have everything as it was?

4. I read that Nintendo was going to add cloud storage for game saves to the Wii U. Did they ever do that? I don't see any options for it, but maybe I'm missing something.

Hopefully there is something that would work because again, I would really hate to have to start over. Thank you for your time and I look forward to replies.

@Travis_The_Dragon If you hack your WiiU to run custom firmware on it, you can use a game save manager. I don't know if this will open up save files to be transferred to other WiiUs or not, but I don't think there's any other way. Though I'm not completely up-to-date with the WiiU hacking scene.

The other possibility could be that you could clone your WiiU's firmware and install it on another WiiU. But again, whether that is actually possible currently, I'm not sure.

Failing either of the above, I'd like to think that save files from a WiiU could be compatible with a PC emulator, but again, I don't know whether this is the case or not currently.

Sites like GBAtemp or Reddit are usually the best places to go for in-depth firmware knowledge.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

In regards to moving gamesaves from one wii u to another, should be a case of copy to Flash drive, then copy gamesaves from Flash drive to new wii u. @Travis_The_Dragon

Destiny, justice and retribrution will be mine.

Thank you for the replies so far, but I'm hoping for definite answers to the 4 questions I asked from someone who's actually done what I'm inquiring about. Surely someone on here has actually done that, right?

Over 200 views and no one can give direct, definite answers to my 4 questions?

@Travis_The_Dragon Sorry. I know you could tranfer save files with most (but not all) games on Wii, but I never got a Wii U.

@Travis_The_Dragon You put a sad face that no one was replying. It broke my heart, I had to say something.

@WoomyNNYes Thank you for the suggestion of Wii U to Wii U transfers. However, if my Wii U stopped working, how would I be able to transfer everything to another Wii u?

@judaspete That's very kind of you! You're too nice!

@gcunit I'm actually looking into that option because of what I mention above to Woomy, but so far what I've read including the link you sent me is VERY VERY confusing and making my head spin. I can't make sense out of any of that. I wish there was a super simple, step by guide for all of howebrew and savemii that started at the very beginning and in a VERY detailed and SUPER easy to understand way explained EVERYTHING you have to do to get all of that to work. Also, we have all Macs in our house and no Windows computers so I'd want a way to do all of this using a Mac. So hopefully I can figure something out with all of this or someone can better help me through it all.

Thank you everyone so very much for all of your replies so far!

@Travis_The_Dragon The basics of it are that, as I suggested in my original post, you need to hack your Wii U to install custom firmware.

To do that, follow the guide here: https://wiiu.hacks.guide/#/

Once Tiramisu is up and running, get Savemii from the homebrew installer. Then use Savemii to backup all your save files.

Once you've got your backups, should you ever need/want to import them to another Wii U, you'll need another hacked Wii U with Savemii running, and you'll need to create a save file for each particular game (i.e. actually play the game just long enough to create a save file) before your import can overwrite it.

I'd be surprised if only having Apple computers was a major issue, but if you're serious about Wii U preservation then investing in a cheap used Win7 laptop or something could be considered.

I have four Wii Us, two of them are hacked and I think I have actually transferred save data from one to the other, though I did all this some time ago, before Tiramisu hit the scene, so my Wii U's are on older custom firmware still, which is why I refrained from giving definite advice in my original post... fading memory.

The guides at hacks.guide have never let me down. I've used them to successfully install custom firmware on multiple Wii Us, 3DS' and Vitas.

@gcunit The link you just provided is great! Thank you so very much! And I do have an old XP computer which I imagine will work since no software other than winrar will be needed to extract files. Apple computers can’t read Wii U formatted memory cards. Thanks again!

@gcunit I had another question that I posted below, but I found the answer and deleted the post so if you got a notification about it, you can ignore it.
