I wish they add autoplay for dialogues with option to switch to manual like they did in FE Echoes. Spamming A is so annoying and breaks the flow of converstations. I just figured that’s why it seems like voice acting is bad - because delays between sentences if you don’t press A in perfect time. And there is a lot of conversation in here

Finally cleared Chapter 1, with a D rank, lol.

I think my biggest problem was that I was being too cautious. Trying to plan around the turrets in the first half (even though they apparently won't attack until the second half), and an over reliance on snipers (I had all three out, and tried dealing with even infantrymen with just them from afar, rather than getting closer with my own infantrymen).

@CroRock Yeah, the art style is kind of the calling card of the series. They made a big deal about the CANVAS engine back when the first one came out, and then after a single game, abandoned it. I think they got caught expecting to create The Next Big Thing and instead only created a niche title, and then went deeper and deeper trying to be the next otaku niche in Japan. The reboot back to the CANVAS style engine that kind of defined the series is a plus. And it's an enhanced engine, certainly. And the gameplay....it's a new story with new maps, new characters, new missions, some new gimmicks. I mean it's not rehashing the prior game at all (cough Bravely Second cough), it's all new stuff using the same play mechanics, which is what an RPG/SRPG series does. Fire Emblem hasn't radically changed gameplay since the NES. On the contrary it keeps adding needless bloat just to have "something new" that detracts from the strengths fo the core gameplay. Pokmemon's been falling into that trap, too.

@RR529 Everyone starts somewhere! If you're not used to the genre there's a huge mindset training that has to happen. You can be a little more reckless in your approach, I err on the side of caution as well but units aren't the fragile little dumplings FE characters are They're soldiers who can take some fire, and high risk gambits tend to pay (charging with one strong trooper to a base, taking out the 2 or 3 scouts there by repeating his turns can work. Even if he's low on health after that and is effectively out of the fight for 2 turns to heal up, he took CP and troops from the enemy buying time for the team to catch up. Just don't charge tanks that way lol

Using manual saves as a learning crutch is very helpful. Try a gambit to see how it works...if it went badly, you can reload. Ch1 is a good "safe" place for grasping the basics (you can replay it.) Ch2 isn't too different but is a little more tactical in thinking.

I'm not amazing at SRPG games overall (I suck at FE so badly) but VC is a little more straight forward and less punishing. Still....the difficulty spike in the latter portion of the first game give me chills. If considering buying the game you definitely want to learn an understanding of the pacing and systems to be able to ace the early levels before buying. I did the first level kind of leisurely, inefficient, got A-rank, and between both phases probably used at most 8 turns, possibly less (and non-story character deaths are permanent like FE, and story character deaths IIRC might be permanent if you lose them in skirmish battles (but you can always just reload a save, unlike FE.)

@NEStalgia VC's way of dealing with fallen units is pretty much a slightly more punishing Phoenix Mode.

@Grumblevolcano LOL, story units in story missions, yes. I believe skirmishes are more permanent and non-story characters are permanent in general.

Yeah, on my third run (of Chapter 1) I completed it in 8 turns (4 turns in each half) with a C Rank. I'm definitely enjoying it, but hearing everyone else A Rank the missions with relative ease has me thinking I'm doing something wrong, lol.

Really the only Strategy RPG I've played before is Fire Emblem, and I just think I'm too used to it's conventions that in comparison make it easier to get into (being able to see all enemies' movement/attack ranges, and being able to replay past missions to level up your characters). In comparison, I've found no way to see enemy ranges in VC4, requiring more guesswork, and while I have seen that you gain EXP after battle, I'm not sure if it applies to your troops or something else (I certainly haven't seen anyone level up).

EDIT: Just found out you can level up your units (by class to boot, so you don't have to worry about someone falling behind due to low use), as well as enhance your equipment, so that alleviates a major worry of mine.

Just did the "Skirmish" that unlocks at the start of Chapter 2 and completed it with a B rank!

@RR529 I haven't played Valkyria Chronicles before but I've played many other strategy games so I was surprised how long it took me to finish the first chapter. I got an A rank from the tutorial mission but only a C in Chapter 1 and D in Chapter 2. I think I just had to learn the mechanics since I was a able to A rank Chapter 1 easily on my second try and Chapter 2 on my third try.

Just keep on playing and you'll get better. You'll learn what units to use against each enemy type which makes you able to move faster on the battlefield. Some classes are not even that good in the missions that are available in the demo. You'll also gain more assets on your way which can help you get better ranks. Have fun and don't pay too much attention to the ranks on your first time through a mission.

It's its, not it's.

Too bad there isn't any strategy games for the Switch that have air and naval units. I'm not buying this for full price.

@Late Yeah, I love strategy games in general, but VC is a bit of a departure from my other favorites (FE, Advance Wars, and the like). Don't get me wrong; I love the series. But it always takes me a little time to get back into the groove of it. Once I do, though, I can't put it down.

Btw, do not JaxonH had anything to say. He mentioned this game to me. Just wondering.

@Eagle9 You'd only pay full price for a game in which you can actively control all branches of the armed services? That's...an interesting perspective.

I believe I've experienced everything the demo has to offer (the three story missions, the demo exclusive mission, and the two skirmishes).

I think I'm still on the edge though on whether or not I'll get it. Maybe I just need to play more.

Of course i decide which games i buy for full price, been playing since late 80's after all so nothing new in the demo for me, others can say what they want. It's the truth in all public, never can satisfy all ;P

@Eagle9 Yeah, of course you decide which games you buy for full price, just like everyone else, obviously. To each his own. "Must control all branches of armed forces for a game to be worth it" just strikes me as an unusual criterion. I'm interested in your pov in terms of why that's a make-or-break element for you.

Have been waiting so long something like Advance Wars, hopes was too high this to be the deal. Glad there's a demo.

Yeah, Wargroove is the real spiritual heir to Advance Wars, this is a whole different beast. They both look like excellent games, but they're not equivalent at all.
