Hi,

I always thought I was pretty good with basic technology but I'm stuck and hoping someone can explain this to me in very simple terms!

My daughter had a used switch at the start of lockdown to play animal crossing. Without me knowing, she downloaded and started to play fortnite with her friends. When I discovered this, we discussed it and decided she could continue playing but I would monitor her. She is really enjoying it and has reached a level she wants to keep and would like to play it on the playstation sometimes. She would also like to change her name to one that doesn't say "free" and some random numbers. Everything I've read lately says she originally needed to make an epic account to play fortnite but she's adamant she just downloaded it and started to play. I've looked at her fortnite account settings and there is an epic id and the option to log out (which I don't want to do in case she can't get back on this account) so does that mean she did make an account? I'm not sure how she'd do that as she doesn't have an email address or a way to access email.

Her switch account is a sub-account from mine. Using my pc, I've made an account on epic using my email and linked it to my nintendo account (both emails are the same) thinking it would link to her fortnite account. I have found the id number on the epic account I've made but it is different to the one on my daughter's switch. I was going to unlink the epic account from my nintendo account again but it says:

  • Shared profile data will be reset on this account
  • Shared game progression and history will be reset on this account
  • Purchases and earned game content will be reset on this account
  • I will not be able to link my Epic Games Account to another Nintendo account

So she would loose everything.

Anyone know where I am going wrong?! She also plays rocket league on the ps so I assume if I can get this epic account issue sorted, I could link that next... or maybe, I'll just leave that!

To add to the above, I've just read the following on the epic website which, if I'm reading it correctly, means if I unlink my switch, I can't link hers?

We highly discourage disconnecting your console account from your Epic Games account for these reasons:

Your game progress and purchases are stored on your Epic Games account, so if you disconnect your console account from your Epic Games account, you’ll lose access to that data from your disconnected console account.
Once you disconnect, you won't be able to connect a different console account of the same type to the same Epic Games account.
Example: If you disconnect your Xbox account, you won't be able to add a different Xbox account to the same Epic Games account.

If you sign in to your Epic Games account using a console or platform that was disconnected, you will automatically create a brand new Epic Games account. This new account will not have any game progression.

Thank you BruceCM but I've done that. I've made an epic account and linked it to my (our) nintendo account. She does not have her own nintendo account as it is a sub-account of mine. The fortnite account she is playing on her switch has not linked to our switch account and I don't know how to change it. Epic states that if you unlink a console or platform, you cannot link another of the same type and we don't want to loose her game progress and items etc.
