Topic: Is it time for me to get a Switch?

Ninhydrin

We have a nintendo Wii U and just wanted your thoughts on upgrading when the Switch Oled comes out in October.
I have looked at the games on the Switch and many of them are the same games on the Wii U ie. Mariokart 8, Mario 3D etc (Iknow they have been slightly upgraded but essentially the same games)

Why would it be worth upgrading to a switch? I was hoping the new one was going to be 4k but with that now scrapped is it worth it?

@Ninhydrin
Nintendo Switch has way much larger games library than Wii U. Way much larger and way much better.
You probably didn't really follow about what Switch games have been released.
There are some Switch games from W ii U but they are not carbon copy version, they are enhanced version or added with something completely new. Some Switch games also remastered or remake from older consoles, added with never before exist features. But there are tons of completely new games on Switch than the remaster / enhanced version from Wii U.
Take a look from playasia for Nintendo Switch games have been released.
If you want to upgrade to Switch OLED on October 2021, i think it will be perfect timing and it will definitely worthy.

@bimmy-lee I value your opinion more than most. I'd say they should go for it, but what are your thoughts?

@NintendoByNature - I’m honestly thrilled someone wants my opinion on this, I was beginning to think nobody would ask. I have a scorcher for you: No. I’d wait eight to 10 years for the Switch successor’s successor. My secret twitter sources confirm this.

@Ninhydrin - Haha, I’m just goofing around. My honest answer is that Switch has probably become my favorite Nintendo console to date (used to be the N64), so my answer would be a resounding “yes” to your question. I haven’t bought a single WiiU port because I played most of them on WiiU, and I still have a big library of games to play. The only suggestion I would make is to possibly wait for the OLED upgrade this fall. I was never much of a handheld gamer, but Switch has shown me the light in that regard.

I'd wait for the next Switch iteration in three or four years.

The 2015 tech inside the current Switch is getting a little long in the tooth.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,473 games (as of July 4th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 2 games (as of June 9th, 2025)

Ninhydrin

@bimmy-lee Perfect - Thanks for that
And to all above that took the time, its appreciated
Oled version will now be pre-ordered

@Ninhydrin - Nice, hope you enjoy it. Just keep in mind that we all have different experiences and you’re asking on a fan site full of mostly enthusiastic Switch folk, but it’s a fairly safe bet that if you’ve enjoyed the WiiU and have an understanding of Nintendo’s quirky approach to hardware; you’ll really enjoy the Switch.

It's your call at this point in time but considering it's been out since 2017 and the library of games for it are more then sufficient for family gaming. I would say for what you pay the v2 Switch not the OLED it's worth it's money as you can have up to 4 local players and if need be 8 Switch with 4 players on each as a local LAN Gaming. So you get more options and plus if you go anywhere else you can still use the Switch without tethered to a TV or go to another relative house and can share the fun. So the WiiU for all it's fault was good during it heyday but now it's the Switch time to shine.

@Ninhydrin if you get one now. Massive library of games and the great games of 2017/18/19/20 are cheaper then when first released.

@Ninhydrin I'd say it's worth getting a Switch. Yeah there are some games that are brought over from the Wii U, but there are quite a bit of original games too. (Such as Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons - all of which I feel are essential games.) There's more games on the way too, like Metroid Dread and Mario Party Superstars. As for the Switch OLED, yeah you could wait for that to come out, but as far as I've seen, most of its new features really only benefit handheld/tabletop mode. If you're mostly gonna play on the TV, you could get the regular Switch for $50 less. The only downside is that you won't get as much internal storage as the OLED. The regular Switch has 32 GB of internal storage, whereas the OLED model has 64 GB.

But yeah, as others have said, the Switch has a massive library of games, so there's something for everyone. What kind of games are you interested in?

@Ninhydrin,

We had (have) the Wii U. We got the Switch the 2nd Christmas it was out, and we have no regrets.

We've had the Gamecube, Wii, Wii U and now the Switch.

Yes. We haven't bought any of the games that we already played on the Wii U, except MarioKart.

But, with MarioKart for the Switch, they brought back holding 2 items, like the Gamecube days! That alone is huge for me! LOL.

But we have a lot of games on our system to play.

The Switch has reached critical mass, so lots to play!

And if you get Nintendo Online, you also get NES and SNES games, so it's like getting 3 games systems!

@MarioLover92 Im mostly interested in the Mario brand games I had a SNES, Nintendo 64, Wii and WiiU in the past. I have Playstation and xbox but prefer the arcadey type games and Nintendo has always done that well.
Really looking forward to trying Luigi Mansion 3 as I have not played that franchise before

The Switch is definitely worth it if you're coming in new but I wouldn't go for the higher end SKUs. If I was jumping in now I'd pick up a Switch Lite and get some life out of that. Then when they inevitably release new hardware in the next 1-3 years jump on that bandwagon. Or alternatively find a non-Lite SKU on special. Personally I wouldn't go with the OLED Model

However.... you're asking this question on a Nintendo fan site so you are clearly looking for a Nintendo friendly answer. Which means you've already made up your mind. So ignore me and stop lurking on this forum and just pick one up, start enjoying some games.

MarioVillager92

@Ninhydrin All righty. I mentioned Super Mario Odyssey being a good one, so I'd totally recommend that. Super Mario Maker 2 and Luigi's Mansion 3 are also very good picks. Super Mario Party is also pretty good, but it's best played with friends/family. I am pretty excited for Mario Party Superstars, that's the one that's based on the N64 games. And yeah, Nintendo games are what I like the most too. Enjoy your Switch OLED when you get it!

Go and find a v2 Switch not the OLED-they are out there and save the money to get the Switch games instead. Mario franchise is the best example of why you want the Switch for the updated games in that series. But at this point there are 400+ games for all age that can hold the console. So to be asking this now I question the varasity of the question itself.
