The timings don’t work out for it. It can’t have been in development before 3D World finished and by the time 3D World was released it’ll have been obvious to Nintendo that Wii U was completely doomed.
On the other hand there are lots of ideas in Odyssey that probably started off as half finished level ideas for 3D World that could have become part of a Wii U sequel or DLC.
The development team may have had some preliminary ideas for a new 3D Mario on the Wii U after 3D World was released, but the development of Captain Toad TT would've delayed full-on development for a 3D Mario until Fall 2014. By then the Wii U was obviously dead in the water and Nintendo would've started developing a replacement for the Wii U.
Doing some research, game started development in early 2014. However, the same studio was also working on several early Switch games(BotW, Splatoon 2, Arms, MK8D, 1-2 Switch) and even some games like Triforce Heroes that were also being developed around the same time. So Odyssey obviously wasnt the sole project. The main thing is though is that throwing the the joy-con/building the game around the joy-cons seemed to be an idea from the start. They might've been able to release it in the latter half of 2016 on Wii U, but they obviously made the better choice releasing it on the Switch. And boy, did that pay off.
For me personally it was the best mario game since Mario 64. Feels like they had a singular vision for this one. It doesn’t feel like it started out on anything else. A switch masterpiece!
they say that life’s a carousel, spinning fast you’ve got to ride it well. The world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams. It’s heaven and hell.
I mean, it is entirely possible early builds were done with the Wii U. But in the end, the Switch is where it landed and no official reference to a Wii U version was ever released as far as I know.
Personally I am getting sick of people whining about ports. I understood and agreed when people argued that the the Wii U lacked games and 3rd party support but now it's the total opposite. Content is content, and who cares what other systems it might have been on first? If you prefer to play it on that platform instead, no one is stopping you. Not many titles these days are system exclusive titles because making major games these days takes a huge amount of resources. Companies need to sell it on as many platforms as they can to be profitable.

@JayJ Not at all likely. Development on the game was always for the next hardware, and in fact the team helped provide a wish list for features on the next console.
The biggest proof against it being a Wii U game is the moons being much more plentiful and quicker to complete than the stars in previous Mario games, being a nod towards portability being a major consideration.

But but the fanboys want some straws to grab onto...what a joke. When ports are on xbox or sony they say nothing but how good the games are but come to the Switch and oh that is sacrilegious to do something like that. Grow up...if you don't know all games are Port that was redesigned from older games for all platforms.
Why are people talking about ports? I just thought it might have had a similar development history as some N64 games that went to Gamecube like Dinosaur Planet.
@JayJ I think they saw your other topic on ports and wanted to read this topic with the subtext that if Super Mario Odyssey was originally a Wii U game than it is a Wii U game like Breath of the Wild, thus another 'port'. (but it is stretching this soooo far to say that even in the case that Odyssey was for a very brief time going to be a Wii U game)
It's kind of hard to explain, I hope that made sense. It is a major stretch, but people will look for anything they can to drag you down for saying that maybe the people wishing for so many ports need to tone it down.
As someone who says that Breath of the Wild is definitively the Wii U's Zelda game, I'm not too concerned with how Odyssey originated. It was never revealed as intending to be a Wii U game. No word has been said of it ever being a Wii U game in concept. I consider it completely a Switch game.
Perhaps it's kind of silly to take it more from how Nintendo themselves advertises the game as opposed to how it originated, but that's how I go with these things.
