64/Sunshine are technically open worlds, you aren't confined to a path, you can go and collect coins or jump around the place, anything really. And Galaxy/2 did have some open world levels but as we know, the majority of them are linear.

The early levels, maybe, but the levels became more confined and linear as you went. You also had to clear most objectives in any world in a set order.
I'm not sure about 3D Land since I've never played it, but Galaxy is definitely not an open world game. With the exception of a few galaxies (like Starshine Beach Galaxy and, of course, Throwback Galaxy), the game is pretty linear. There isn't much exploration that can be done like in SM64 and SMS.
