After StarBoy91 (here's my shout-out to you, StarBuddy!) made a wish in the Wish => Corruption thread ("I wish Nintendo had made a Kid Icarus game for the Super Nintendo"), I created an elaborate corruption that was in essence an idea of an alternate reality in which Kid Icarus became the key Nintendo franchise instead of Metroid. Here's a link to that post for your curiosity:
That got me thinking...maybe it's possible to start a new thread in which people post creative outcomes for what could've been...in regards to Nintendo. What if Nintendo had continued the Game Boy line after the Game Boy micro? How would it look in comparison to the Nintendo DS series? What if Rare had stayed with Nintendo, telling Microsoft to 'shove their offer up their...Windows XP'? This is your chance to theorise on what could have been for Nintendo...after all, "anything that can happen will happen; if not in this reality, then in another." Then-Major Samantha Carter, Stargate SG-1
Here's an interesting one: What if the Gym series of the Pokemon Trading Card Game had a third set focusing on the Elite Four and Champion?
The set, entitled 'Gym Elites' (Japanese - Gym 3: Trial of the Sekiei Elite) added several new Trainers' Pokemon to the game, featuring cards 'owned' by Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha and Lance, and even Red and the Champion Blue. Some notable additions were as follows:
LORELEI
Lorelei's Articuno (Rare-Holo, Water-type) Lorelei's Lapras (Rare, Water-type) Lorelei's Jynx (Rare, Water-type - notable for being the first Jynx card to translate the Ice-type half rather than the Psychic-type half) Lorelei's Slowbro (Rare-Holo, Psychic-type - It was the first card that could actually devolve itself in order to add a Lorelei's Shellder to the bench)
BRUNO
Bruno's Hitmonlee (Rare-Holo, Fighting-type) Bruno's Flareon (Rare, Fire-type) Bruno's Kabutops (Rare-Holo, Fighting-type - it became infamous for its ability to cause infinite damage with the right coin flips) Bruno's Wigglytuff (Rare-Holo, Colorless-type - when the set was first released, people were outraged that Bruno had such a cute Pokemon...but it quickly overtook other cards in the tournament scene due to its powerful 'Do the Tsunami' attack, leading to it being the first card to be banned from tournament play)
AGATHA Agatha's Parasect (Rare-Holo, Grass-type) Agatha's Golbat (Rare, Grass-type) Agatha's Gengar (Rare-Holo, Psychic-type - It ended up being the first Pokemon to actively double retreat costs for Pokemon not owned by Agatha with it's PokeBody 'Slow Torment') Agatha's Marowak (Rare-Holo, Fighting-type - It had the ability to deal 50 damage for every Energy card removed from it; this was a typo, as it was only applied to Fighting Energy. It was the first card to need errata in the history of the TCG)
LANCE Lance's Aerodactyl (Rare-Holo, Fighting-type) Lance's Dragonite (Rare, Colorless-type - The Japanese version was Holo, but the English one wasn't, leading to mass imports from Japan of the Holo variety. Eventually, imports from Japan of any Gym cards were banned) Lance's Gyarados (Rare-Holo, Water-type - famous for being misprinted in limited quantities with red-wash art, it was later believed to be a sneak-preview of Gold and Silver. Copies of the misprinted card sell for $150,000US on eBay) Lance (Rare and Rare-Holo, Trainer card - In 1st Edition packs, this card had no 1st Edition symbol. In Unlimited, it did. This makes Lance the most common 1st Edition card of all time, even surpassing Starter Machamp)
BLUE Blue's Blastoise (Rare-Holo, Water-type - This card is famous, as it forms a panoramic art of a big battle when placed side-by-side next to Red's Charizard, seemingly simulating the art on Pokemon Stadium's packaging and Ash's League battle with Gary in the anime) Blue's Eevee (Rare-Holo, Colorless-type - This is the only print of Eevee that doesn't actually evolve)
RED Red's Butterfree (Rare-Holo, Grass-type) Red's Pikachu (Rare-Holo, Lightning-type - This is the only print of Pikachu which doesn't evolve) Red's Clefairy (Rare, Colorless-type - Often cited as being a representation of the original intention for the anime character Ash (Japanese: Satoshi) to have started with Clefairy...but Pikachu proved more popular! Pika-POWER!)
ROCKET Rocket's Mew (Rare-Holo, Psychic-type - Players were disappointed that this card wasn't very powerful without many Pokemon on the Bench)
There were four Theme Decks built around Lorelei (with foil Lorelei's Cloyster and Stadium card Seafoam Islands being highlights); Bruno (with foil Bruno's Machamp and Stadium card Victory Road being highlights); Agatha (with foil Agatha's Gengar #2 and Pokemon Tower being highlights); and Lance (with foil Lance's Dragonite #1 and Lance's Room being highlights).
In Japan, every Pokemon was represented, but there is no english ________'s Chansey, meaning that Chansey is the only card not in an English Gym set.
Now, it's your turn to do a What If...? themed around what could have been with Nintendo
"Pay me 20 Rupees and I'll talk." CHINK
"Never forget the comfort of freshly-washed shorts."
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
