I hate Twitter. I really hate trying to find announcements or release dates for things on more traditional websites and they just give you a link to their Twitter. I hate that Twitter has become so mainstream that world leaders are using it to announce policy.

I just do not like it.

@Buizel That’s an interesting point that you bring up about films. They have that max 2-3 hour runtime that is mandatory for mainstream movies, and most aren’t able to “flesh out” most characters (sometimes even the main one) in great or exhausting detail.

But I kind of like that limitation. It means that in the best films you are getting scene after scene of vital and well crafted story/character beats and tense atmosphere while even the best TV shows feel slightly drawn out with some rather boilerplate and inessential scenes. TV shows are better and more diverse in recent years, but they still use the bailing and cliffhanger strategy to keep viewers tuning in. I suppose there is an art to that but it does feel overly manipulative a lot of time.

I was watching several entertaining shows recently. One was based on a book and the whole season revolved around a single 30 page chapter in the book. It just felt rather long-winded and by the end I felt entertained, but ultimately baited into another long Season 3 to see the conclusion to certain plot threads. So sometimes it feels like another time sink in my life because you have to invest so many hours to see through the story in its entirety.

There are positives and negatives to both mediums for sure though. I can definitely see the greatness in TV storytelling as well.

@Rexenokid I completely agree and that's exactly what I do. But a larger and larger number of people now, even just embed Twitter into their sites instead of updating now. I check the news and half the time there are tweets in every article... It's obnoxious.

Yeah I really just use Twitter to get updates on a few YouTube channels, podcasts, and game journalists I follow. I don't follow any friends, and I don't invite friends to follow me.

I don't really understand people's use of social media these days. Instagram has become the bee's knees, but I can't see any reason at all to switch to it from Facebook. I'm not a huge photos person, and my personality is better expressed with words than with photos. Facebook does everything, so why use something that does less.

@iKhan I don't use Facebook either, aside from messenger. And that's only because I live in Japan and it's easier than trying to explain Discord to my family back home.

How come it is possible for the battery on the Nintendo switch to become so innacurate that you have to power cycle it? It was never a problem on previous nintendo consoles. And why does the battery indicator on the top left of the screen that shows when you charge the console in handheld mode/boot it in handheld mode while its charging show that it is still charging at 100%?

To go back to the earlier Ghibli discussion, I checked out Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro from the library and they both worked great, so I finally got to see a couple of their movies! Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I thought they were both just fine, if that. They were both over an hour of background and premise and about 10 minutes of anything actually happening. I think I fell asleep during Totoro. And although the art is decidedly beautiful, everything and everyone looks the same, like the characters are actually actors appearing in the different movies (I just called the boy in Kiki's "Phil" the whole time because he looks exactly like Phil from Ni no Kuni). Maybe I'm too old for them, or they just aren't my thing. As they were both by the same director, I would like to see one of the movies by the other director (sorry, I can't remember their names) but my library doesn't have any of them at the moment.

Face ID sucks on the iphone. Really wish my 6s hadnt started shutting down randomly after I jumped to ios 13... I know apple lost a lawsuit for crippling their older phones via software but I'm extra annoyed with them. My 11max pro is ok (if not way too big but I wanted the better cameras) but If i could slap those cameras on my 6s I'd send it back in a heartbeat.

@DannyBoi Why is it possible? Because things can break and human error is always a factor. But this is the first time I've heard about this issue - and it is also important to power cycle your devices periodically anyway. All of them.

@Heavyarms55 I'm late to this discussion, but I'm always happy to see people calling out the car culture in the USA. I can't drive for medical reasons, and because my town has such limited public transportation, I am reliant on my parents to get me anywhere. It's one reason I'm excited about the prospect of moving up to the Northeast. The public transportation seems to be more of a thing up there.

One thing that really gets me, though, and that's that even our official ID is linked to the ability to drive. What do they ask for everywhere? Your driver's license. For years I didn't even know there was such a thing as a non-driver's license state ID that I could get, so I didn't have one. I get that it's probably a matter of simplicity that the driver's license and the ID that you're asked verification for became one and the same, but as someone who can't drive, this is something that is flat out bizarre to me. Our general ID should not something tied to the ability to drive.

@Harmonie Wow, I'm sorry I don't want to be rude but you didn't know about regular state IDs? I don't recall where I first heard about them, but I remember knowing about them as early as jr. high school.

Otherwise I agree. And it's the connection between driver's licences and ID that has further thrown fuel on the whole immigration issue in the US. The two should really be separate things.

@T7Hokage017 Don’t worry man😉. I don’t think anyone will hate you sharing your opinions. If they do remember that’s more of a reflection on them rather than you, so don’t worry about it.

When it comes to whole “playing a demon means you are participating in evil”, I’m not sure. I grew up in a Catholic family and went to Catholic school, where the priest would always say demons and the devil are evil. That oddly made me more attracted to them and the concept of what “evil” is. I do have an occasional attraction to the dark side of human nature and like to watch horror films. But I think that isn’t necessary a bad fascination. I also enjoy light and quirky things as well.

The way I look at it, throughout history the mythologies of many peoples and civilizations have had that balance of light and dark. In Ancient Greece they had Apollo (the god of the arts, grace, and modesty) and Dionysus (the god of wine and excess). The tendency of Apollo is to value modesty but value order which may lead to unhappiness and stagnation while Dionysus is destructive but also a force of revolution and change. These two forces play off each other and one is not more primary than the other.

So I think it’s fine to let the player experience that Dionysian urge within the context of entertainment. It lets people release that in a safe (and I hope) healthy way.

I hate it when protagonists are "half demon" or whatever.
It's not cool. I don't care what people say... anything related to devils or demons is evil.
If it's evil... then why would anyone want to play as that protagonist?

It doesn't matter if you believe that they exist or not because evil does exist in this world.
I refuse to support anything that condones evil as something that "can" be good.
I find it rare when I find an exception to this rule. I guess it's just me though...

Personally, I think it's a spectrum. In Cuphead, you are technically fulfilling a deal made with the devil. But it's a very cartoony game where the plot isn't really a big part of it.

In other contexts, the idea of a half-evil character rising above their demonic upbringing actually creates a really powerful story about the power of human will over demonic forces. Characters like DC's Raven and Marvel's Nightcrawler have elements of this.

But if you are a straight up demon, and you are playing that role, then I'd agree it makes my stomach turn a bit too. I generally kind of hate casually playing the role of the bad guy in a game. I know it doesn't bother some people, but personally I just don't want my escapism to be simulating something that is actively malicious. This is a reason I haven't been super gung-ho about trying the GTA games.

I don't know if I've mentioned this here or not, but I'm gonna now. I prefer physical buttons, switches and in general, mechanic input and controls. I don't like touch screens, touch keyboards and what I call "not-buttons" those devices that just have a spot you touch to turn them on or off without any actual physical button.

Perhaps I am old fashioned, as people younger than me (God, I'm only 28!) seem to take no issue with everything being a touch screens and other non-mechanical input methods.

I suppose I don't mind motion controls, but I prefer them to be secondary or supplementary, not the main way I control a device.

I have a lamp and a heater that both use the "not-button" to control them - the lamp sucks because think about it, when it's off it's not like I can see where the mark it to touch it and turn it on, and the heater actually just only works when it feels like it. Sometimes I sit there tapping it and changing fingers and hands until it finally turns on...

What's wrong with a button or switch? Why are these being phased out?

Why are there no smartphones with buttons anymore? Throw your bendable phone in the trash and give me something like an iPhone or Galaxy, but with a sliding keyboard and buttons/joypads for games!

@T7Hokage017 On the same note, I dislike the trend of devices not having headphone jacks. Even though I do use wireless headphones, I want the option to use wired as well. I don't see how dropping the headphone jack is, in any way, an improvement. I've heard people argue that it makes it easier to make the device thinner and more water proof. Not a good enough trade off. Not at all. Especially at the cost of most devices now.

Anti-Matter

1. I prefer my own calendar design than calendar created by companies. Calendar design from Banks is the most unattractive for me.

2. I will give salute for a man who really love to wear Pinkish outfits yet still maintain their masculinity. Pink is actually color for male.

3. I really don't like Brown color for outfits. It just looks too old fashioned or not vivid color.

@Heavyarms55

It’s so annoying. My car is a 2008 car, so any hope I have of listening to music on it is a jack. I have no interest in replacing my whole infrastructure just because a company wasn’t in the mood to offer such a basic feature. Bluetooth is a battery monster, so no, I don’t always have Bluetooth on.

Personally, it’s a complete dealbreaker for me. I don’t care if it’s the greatest phone ever made. No jack, no buy.

As more of a silly opinion. I prefer Lzzy Hale over Amy Lee in terms of female rock vocals. Lzzy Hale reminds me a lot of Ann Wilson, and that’s not a bad thing.

@iKhan Problem is, I fear eventually we will be given no choice. Apple and Samsung lead the industry and everyone copies them. They are pushing the headphone jack off the table and it is no longer a standard feature... Eventually they are going to make it so we need the stupid dongle. And they will force consumers to upgrade by their same usual BS of planned obsolesce. Where they stop updating the OS with older phones and then pressure app makers to not support older OS versions - so even if you replace the battery on your phone, all the software you like to use is no longer supported...

@T7Hokage017 The really are quite easy to use and have benefits for sure - I do like the freedom of not having that cord dangling everywhere and being able to move around like normal. But they have drawbacks too, if there are a bunch of wireless devices around, static and interference aren't unusual and they become yet another device you need to keep charged - and the small ones like the earbud style (which I dislike earbuds in general because they never stay in my ears, but I think that's more because of my weird ears than the earbuds) often don't even have the option to use a wire when the battery is dead.

Personally I really like my big earmuff style wireless set because when the battery is dead, or if I want to use it with my Switch, I can use a regular headphone jack instead.

@Rexenokid I have a set sort of like this, with clips that hook around my ears. I use them in summer because earmuff style headphones are just too hot. But I still prefer the earmuff style. More comfortable, better sound quality and no fear of them falling out. Also no need for the hooks/clips.

@T7Hokage017 I don't think you're wrong. It's normal for older tech to be phased out with newer tech. I grew up with VHS and and portable cassette or CD players honestly don't miss them at all. Because they were replaced with devices that do the same thing, better, without sacrificing any features. Many new devices today seem to sacrifice as much as they add and call it "better". No more buttons or headphone jacks on phones and they call that improvement. Well, I strongly disagree.
