Nah, according to that Australian "expert," Sydney could be the next place to develop a volcano.
It scares me that geologists can get jobs without a basic knowledge of how the tectonic plates work...

THIS JUST IN! There has been reports from somebody on the internet renowned Chocobo-loving expert that Sydney is currently DEVELOPING THEIR OWN VOLCANO. We advise all readers to panic, as it will almost certainly be pointed directly at our shores. It's like a VOLCANO MISSILE CANNON. Of your doom. Now buy some crap from our advertisers.
Are you guys being serious? Buying Japanese "stuff" will help the victims of the earthquakes and tsunamis?? Current donations are wasted? ~_
No one said donations are wasted.
To repeat, donations are very important in the short term. Longer term, though, what's going to help Japan? Its economy. Japan runs on welfare - the better off it is, the more it can look after its people. So a year from now Japan will be helped by its businesses, the people that work for those businesses and the money that's in the market.
it's more like: Donate->Help people now. Buy their products->Help people in the long run.
It's not like you shouldn't donate, though, but there are more ways to give the country your money.
Exactly. Japan will need help for a long time to come. Are you going to keep donating for 12 months? Of course not, that's unreasonable. Donate this week, next week yes. Then go out there and buy Japanese products.
Donations are really, really, really good. But once that money is spent (and that kind of money goes into consumables like health care and food), it's gone. A healthy Japanese economy will help it into the longer term.
So if anything, please spend more money on Japanese goods. Just make sure it's not second hand or super- discounted goods, because in both cases the Japanese company doesn't actually benefit.
My mistake, it was the above comment that triggered my last response. Its good that you acknowledge that buying goods doesn't do squat to actually help the current victims of the natural disasters which is kinda what I thought this thread was all about. Also, there's not really any need to mention bolstering Japan's economy because its unlikely the Nintendo fans on this site won't purchase more NIntendo products at the earliest possible time they can, but its good to stress that if you can, you should donate now because the quake and tsunami victims need your help now and hold off on analyzing Japan's economy. I'm sure they'll be doing fine economically.
What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.
Oh and BTW, if you donate avoid shady organizations like red cross.
what's wrong with red cross? just donated there.... i went with them because i had a bad time with oxfam before, i don't really know what organizations to trust.
Publisher Aksys Games is donating 100% of the purchase price of anything purchased on their store until March 24th to charity efforts in Japan. That's pretty awesome of them. There are many items that are on sale as well. Check it out.
GlobalGiving dispersed a total of $750,000 of collected donations today to 6 Japanese relief groups.

It's great to see so much enthusiasm for donating to the relief efforts here! Despite all the media issues that have been discussed, it's heartening to hear that so many people gave at least a little bit to help out instead of just following the media freak-out train. Thanks Raylax and others for keeping us updated on the situation.
