i can see NHK (japanese channel) from here, and they seem more worried about gasoline and water than radiation.
It's not like i understand it, though... Hence the "seem"

I think it's best to realize the Japanese people are probably more aware of what is and isn't a problem in their own country than the American press.

You're right, though. There is some concern about the nuclear power plant, of course, but the Japanese are a practical people - they won't worry about a meltdown until it actually happens. Which is unlikely.

They've managed to get power back to the cooling systems, so they'll be able to start pumping real coolant into the reactors soon. Seems like the nuclear scare is over.

I'll be interesting to see how the media twists it from now to further its political agenda.

Well, I just flicked the channel from ITV News after they declared Japan's recovery attempts to be completely failing. Apparently on the basis that in the 5 days since the tsunami, they haven't yet rebuilt the entire West side of the country and everyone's still in evacuation centers. 'Cos that was totally ever going to happen.

Music made on a DS to help Japan

After the disasters that struck Japan, the world is showing their support.
JordyVision & Seb Lee, known for the latest release Y.A.M.A, decided to donate all the money
that will come from the sales of the Y.A.M.A album.

Y.A.M.A is an EP by the Dutch artist JordyVision, so far the only EP made on a Nintendo DS using the KORG M01 software.

The price has been set to €0,50 and up, for those who want to give more.
All money will be transferred to the Peace Winds fund.
The campaign will run until March 31st.

The American media is more interested in building fear in Americans than pesky things like truthful reporting or scientific fact.

The other thing that stupid little image doesn't show? The fact that even is by some weird anti-miracle, it happened, the radiation dose by the time it reached American would be NEXT TO NOTHING. Certainly not even close to being life threatening.

Japan, meanwhile, would be completely destroyed. Please forgive me if I show more concern for the Japanese than the one in 100 million Americans that would be affected by an event such as that.

But luckily, contary to the western press, the situation in Japan isn't CLOSE to being that bad.

hehe it's mostly the US.
Yet they included the rather small area of mexico where i live under the yellow part, too!

about the fan, this is looks like their explanation.

@Waltz: we already know the news media in general (and this includes in Japan, perhaps not so much in terms of this event but certainly in others they're as guilty as the rest of 'em) is sensationalist and exaggerates the hell out of stuff in order to boost ratings. i know you're upset, but please, could you tone it down with the ranting?

more on the topic of relief efforts and/or donations, the shop i'm apprenticing at is hosting an event for Tattooers for Japan — Japan's had a gigantic influence on the world of tattooing, and we owe them so much that this is the least we can do. participating shops will have a day or two next month where you go in, choose a set design off of a sheet of flash, pay your money (i've seen 'em saying like $50-$150-ish depending on the shop), and all proceeds made that day will go straight to charity. they're still working on choosing which charity will give the most to the people of Japan (some organizations will skim more than others y'know :/). anyway, i've been drawing up little flash designs for the past couple days, and my mentor's been running around trying to pull in some of the other downtown businesses to do something special that day along with us, and also to get some participating artists together and on the same page. it's gonna be a lot of fun :3

You also got to remember that this entire Nuclear Crisis works perfectly for those against Nuclear Power in the states, so of course many news networks and papers against Nuclear Power are going to over exaggerate as much as they can to try and turn people on their side. I probably see it more than a lot of you guys because I live on Cape Cod which is full of people against Nuclear Power. It is actually a little wrong as well because our paper (Also against Nuclear Energy) never did really talk like they cared about the lost lives and suffering, but all they cared about was getting the point out that Nuclear energy is bad and should not be allowed...Sorry for getting a little political, but this has been annoying me for the past few days.

Thank you guys for reminding me why I stopped watching the news. All this fearmongering has been making me sick. Now excuse me while I contemplate whether or not to put my $30 spare dollars to a good cause, or to put it towards something useless, like a video game.

Sorry if I've caused any offense.

I just can't think of an occasion that I've been angrier than this. As a journalist, the lack of ethics from the entire profession has offended to me to the core. On top of that, to follow this endless self-important "how will this affect America/ Australia/ wherever else" trite, as though the 0.1% chance that any of this will have an impact on Australia/ America / wherever is even remotely important, when I have family in Tokyo, annoys me in the extreme.

If I have offended anyone, I am sorry, not the intention, and Nintendolife copped far 'nicer' ranting than Facebook or Twitter from me it's just that I can't really avoid the news, I need to keep on it 24/7 at the moment, so that anger has a lot of room to stew

Your charity drive does sound good, though! Best of luck with it, I hope it's successful

While we're on this topic, it actually helps Japan if you buy Japanese games at full retail price.

The reason is basic economics: if you spend money on Japanese goods, you'r supporting the company. A healthy company is able to pay it's staff, hire more staff, and invest in more projects, meaning there is more money in Japans economy. The more money in the economy, the quicker it will rebuild.

Donations are really, really, really good. But once that money is spent (and that kind of money goes into consumables like health care and food), it's gone. A healthy Japanese economy will help it into the longer term.

So if anything, please spend more money on Japanese goods. Just make sure it's not second hand or super- discounted goods, because in both cases the Japanese company doesn't actually benefit.

Raylax

That sounds really cool, tbd, hope it raises lots of money And yay, what WaltzElf said. Buy Japanese stuff, it'll really help out. I'm getting some uni money soon, might have to grab some more music. FOR THE GOOD OF JAPAN. Also my iPod. But mostly Japan. Honest. Wheee another YUI album.

To put abgar's picture in perspective, this is the fallout map from Chernobyl:

Before you all go "oh s**t" and refuse to ever visit Europe (or if you're already here, flee it), note that we're not all dead. Or growing extra heads or glowing or any of that stuff We all have literal balls of steel, however.
Even if some of that radiation does reach American shores, by assistance of Japan's aforementioned Giant Evil Radiation-O-Fan (presumably built as a counter-measure to America's also aforementioned Giant Evil Earthquake Machine), it'd hardly even register as background radiation.

Exactly! In all seriousness, I will be spending my entire disposable income on Japanese goods for the next few months. It's the best I can do, but hopefully I can convince others to do the same.

It's essentially a different way of donating.

Nah, according to that Australian "expert," Sydney could be the next place to develop a volcano.

It scares me that geologists can get jobs without a basic knowledge of how the tectonic plates work...
