The other thread got locked thanks to some people's opinions (keep them to yourself if you're going to be negative), but I'd like to direct your attention to the relief efforts. If you're unaware of what's happened, the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan has hit the north-east of the country and triggered devastating tsunamis, the size of which has launched tsunami warnings in areas all across the Pacific, as far as Australia, Hawaii, and Peru.

Correct. This is obviously a topic that affects many people here, even if it is indirectly. Let's be sensitive and keep the discourse respectful. (Which nearly everybody was doing in the other thread. The exceptions, unfortunately, were significant ones.)
I heard a couple of hundred people were found on a beach in Sendai and over 80 thousand are missing. That's just awful.
Kudos to the architects and government(and people)... they've saved a lot of people with their years of preparation.

Here comes my negative opinion, my tank is below E and I have to get to work but gas costs like 3.50 and that is awful so this whole morning sucks.
About that earthquake though, that sucks. Fortunately it's out of the way now and it won't take Japan long to rebuild and get back on their toes. They probably have lil Wall-Es cleaning up the country as we speak.
It's hard to think that an earthquake on the other side of the world was so hard that the water moved by it will be here in some hours. It's worse when i remember that the peninsula where i live is getting separated from main land thanks to a certain fault in california...

What's scarier is that a magnitude 8.9 earthquake is about 1.41 Exajoules of energy. That's 1,400,000,000,000,000,000 Joules. I can't imagine being in the center of all that power. Truly a scary time for everyone involved.

NHK have said 300+ dead, 500+ missing. That's a lot lower than the 88K figure that the BBC said.... surprisingly low in fact.

I've just watched it on the news all afternoon and I was flabbergasted by the devastating effects of the tsunami. Cars being swept away like leaves and things like that. Everyone should donatesome of their money.
I woke up and saw it on the news this morning and didn't think much of it. But good gravy, that tsunami just swept over those fields like wildfire. I'd donate money but I have nothing to give. :/
I can see everyone pointing to the hand of God and blaming global warming... urgh
They said the tsunami also hit Hawii but no one got hurt. Their also saying that the next big earthquake may hit California.

Wow, GlobalGiving has already nearly made their $90,000 target in about 5 hours (it was nearly empty when I donated), with 1,500 donations. That's pretty incredible, I really hope it helps.

Now we'll have the crazy religious groups thanking god for the earthquake
Or the crazy conspiracy theorists who will believe the US caused the disaster with their magical earthquake machine
A lot of people are going to exploit this distaster for their own ends - a BBC journo even tried to attribute global warming to the disaster. The best we can do is give, and ignore them.
I gave $100 plus 15% operating costs, but I may give more over the coming weeks - especially if it impacts nearby countries.
