Not sure if this counts but the Invincibility cheat in Goldeneye on the N64. You only had something like 2:15 to finish the level to unlock it.

That wasn't hard at all. I got that on the first try! O_o

In fact the gilded sword is technically harder to get than the gold dust because it INCLUDES getting gold dust, and even that's by far not the hardest thing to obtain in video games.

Since I used Gamefaqs and still can't find them, the last 2 collectables in Shadow Complex. And one small piece of the map that is behind a one way, no other entrances, insta-death area.

I honestly wonder if it would take more time and effort to get every single mask in order to get it, or to get the heart piece in that final Goron area.

@Phil: Really? I personally thought the Goron Room on the Moon was way harder, the race was actually quite fun

I thought the Goron room on the Moon was harder too...until I realized you don't have to turn while rolling...the obstacles bounce you safely in different directions automatically. I'm a slow learner.

Whatever item you get for beating Emerald Weapon in FF7. I don't know what that is since I've never beat him.

I swear that a couple of the trinkets in VVVVVV are impossible to get without turning invincibility on. I know there were two in particular, but I can't remember the names of the room, right this second lol D:

I second the fierce deity mask! It's worth it to be a n00b on the final boss though :3

It's not an item, but dropping Ragnaros in vanilla World of Warcraft was pretty tough. You needed to get 40 people together at one time, playing for several hours straight, in order to beat him, and every one of those 40 people needed to have sunk many, many hours into equipping themselves prior to attempting it.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

It's been years since I played, but I do remember trying for hours to get some items (some reason, Brave Suit comes to mind). Somehow, though, it's like the collective misfortune I've had at getting drops especially in Final Fantasy II/IV was returned to me in the form of luck in FF XII. It's supposedly so hard to get the Danjuro from an also-rare Larva Eater that I told myself I'd only kill one and move on. Then my some miracle it did drop that dagger! Only thing I haven't done in XII is fight a lvl. 99 Chocobo, LOL. I've been equally unlucky with FF II/IV, however, as I've never gotten the Pink Tail (good thing we're at a game site, or it would sound like a chauvinistic metaphor for chasing women ) on the console versions, nor have I gotten the Glass Mask, Medusa Sword, or Cursed Bracelet.

@RevolverLink
I keep telling myself I'm going to do the FF IX speed run for Excalibur II, and never have. Did you get it? The name alone makes it irresistible! That may have to be my next goal after getting/giving up on SNES FF II Pink Tail. Happily, there is a guide at GameFAQs for the Excalibur II speed run I'll use.

@Morphtroid
I've seen people throw out all kinds of numbers on the Pink Tail odds (there should be a King of Kong-style documentary on the quest ), but the one that sticks out in my mind is 1/4096 on SNES FF II. Thing that sucks is I know the battery on my cart is going on borrowed time, since it's 19 years old.

@Trikeboy
I was VERY happy to look online circa 2000 and see cheats that were unknown in 1997/98 when I primarily played it (like invincibility). There was a lot in the game I'd given up on, like accessing the Egypt stage.

@FlutterShyGuy - I gave it a try once, but gave up about halfway once I realized that a) I wasn't going to reach Disc 4 before the 12-hour time limit expired and b) I wasn't having much fun ignoring almost everything I love about FFIX. I can't even imagine how hard it is to get a "perfect save" in that game; with all of the items that become locked after certain events throughout the game, it really leaves no room for error when trying to get the Excalibur II.
