At this point it feels guaranteed that a Direct will happen this month. And since it'll be the first Direct of the year, AND after all that depressing news, it'll be a big one.
I hope we get one soon, we need one, like, right now. Because things are going downhill pretty fast.
thats pretty much true. i have faith in nintendo, but they refuse to give anyone a bone. give me at least SOME new footage. i want X, Tropical Freeze, Bayo2, but i guess they don't want my money.
And you're going to give it to them anyway so why bother with that last statement?

How is it guaranteed the last direct was just over a month ago and Nintendo has not even hinted about one.

They rarely do honestly. The announcement for a Direct is usually the day before it happens.
It'll probably be the last week of January, or the first week of February.
Mostly to get out some last minute hype for DKCTF & Bravely Default before release, some info about upcoming eShop releases (maybe the Sonic: Lost World -Zelda DLC & next Wii Sports Club release), new trailers for Yoshi's New Island, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Disney Magic Castle, and finally hopefully a trailer for ONE of their big Wii U games (X, Smash, MK8, HW, OR Bayonetta 2).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I'm starting to wonder if Nintendo is reconsidering their Directs in light of the poor sales. Those things are great for us hardcore fans that check sites like this, know the time of them and tune in, but most people don't even know they exist. I imagine 90% of the viewers already have a Wii U, and honestly Nintendo is going to be more concerned about the vast numbers that do not have one, than those that do.
At the very least, I think we might start seeing a big gap between the announcement of the direct, and it actually happening, so they can attempt to get a bit more exposure.
I'm calling one next Wednesday, January 28. You heard it here first.
I'd say that's a fair guess seeing as they have most of the Directs on a Wednesday. Then again, Cult County is being revealed on friday.. this may hint at a Nintendo Direct. WHO KNOWS.. all I know is the wait is too long.

I agree with the part about them announcing it further ahead of time. I think that they should even announce it to you on your Wii U / 3DS in the notifications section. Also, it'd be nice to actually watch them through your Wii U / 3DS. IE through eShop or something. (yah yah, I know you can probably watch it through the internet browser, but it'd be nice if they could somehow do it more directly to your platform.)

But it goes to the same gaming sites like all gaming news so who cares?

You can watch them on 3DS (I dunno about Wii U)

WOW! HO LEE SHOOT! Do you guys do this every month, or is this a first? I don't think I've ever seen so many people freak out over the lack of an announcement on something that usually gets very little hype-time.
And some of you are so misinformed, too. Ok, maybe misinformed is the wrong word, but taking a few too many liberties.
First thing I notice (because it's in the last comment) is the info on Renegade Kid. First off, it's an FPS for the 3DS. Yes, it has something to do with Nintendo. He did not say it was a Nintendo Direct, but he didn't deny it, either. Specifically, someone asked if the "reveal at the end of the month" referred to a Nintendo Direct, and he replied "Maybe. Maybe not." Yes, he called it speculation, as I recall, but that's not denying. There's also no confirmation that this is Cult County, as Renegade Kid has also attained rights to "Moon," which is their DS title that, much like Mutant Mudds, just didn't get enough fanfare for how good it was, and as I've been told, was also an FPS.
Now, I COULD be wrong, but this is the information I have. I suggest looking this up, yourself, if you aren't sure.
Second, I imagine Nintendo can't pass up a chance for a Direct for a few reasons.
One, they're gonna want to do one more Year of Luigi nod before killing it, next month, considering it's a YEAR of Luigi, and it started in February.
Two, after stocks fell, the knee jerk reaction would be to get that confidence back any way necessary. That would include giving the fans (and more importantly, the investors) some big info.
Three, they had a lot to talk about with nothing to show, last January. Why do people assume they're not going to have more to show of last January's picks, and why don't people seem to think they could have new games to announce, drop hints on, imply, or otherwise keep a secret?
Beyond that, there's plenty of 3DS love to go around, this month, what with Yoshi's New Island, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton, Monster Hunter 4, Kirby Triple Deluxe, and by far most importantly, Bravely Default on the horizon. These were all promised or suggested for early 2014 (I'd say between now and July, given the way Nintendo works).
And there's always this year's heavy hitters. While I bet Bayo 2 has nothing to show, yet, Sakurai likely has more veterans to confirm, Mario Kart 8 is drawing ever nearer, and why would they pass up an opportunity to hype up a game coming in less than a month?
Keep in mind, these can't be made on a dime. Nintendo needs some time to make sure the limelight falls on the right side of their work.
Directs take some editing, and Nintendo probably won't announce one until they can be sure they'll have it ready, by then. If Renegade Kid's hint drop means anything, then it's ready and we'll see it on Friday. If not, the 28th doesn't sound unlikely. And if that still isn't it, we can always hope for the 31st.
If none of these happen, Nintendo has stumped me, and even I can't predict them.
First of all, Nintendo have at least one nintendo direct every month (this has been happening since september 2012). So it is guarenteed that there will be one this month.
Secondly, every nintendo direct has been broadcast on a tuesday, wednesday, thursday or friday (in the US). This means the 23rd, 24th, 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st are all likely dates.
Finally, as some of you have already mentioned, Nintendo tend to announce the date/time of the upcoming direct within 24 hours of it being broadcast. Keep an eye on your email if you are subscribed to their newsletter as this is usually the quickest way to find out.
