Topic: AI Usage in Video Games

Hello NintendoLifers!

After Gamescom, the game Ananta did catch my eye. A giant game spawling between 2 worlds? Wow, pretty neat concept. It's also free? Sure, I'll look into it.

Of course, there are some rumors that the game will use generative AI, like NPC's evolving each time you talk ti them and NetEase using AI to "amplify" game development. Now I'm not sure if I should play games which even have a sliver on generative AI.

I'm not sure where to stand on AI usage in video games. AI has been a part of the gaming industry, but never in such a broad fashion. I really want to know other people's opinions on this matter.

Just please don't get into fights in the comments if others disagree.

i will avoid supporting AI in every way possible to the best of my ability, within reason, until I eventually die.

They literally can't make a game so cool I can't resist spending my money on it. ✌️

I don't really think Generative AI has any real space in a creative field by any capacity due to its unreliability in regards to programming and visual assets, and I've seen enough proof to back that claim. People didn't need this technology to make games like 3-4 years ago and I think it's stupid to suddenly claim otherwise, and that's not even going into the ways the push for GenAI have driven up tech prices and eat away at our natural resources.

It was Tony Grayson who put it best:

"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."

I don't think generative AI is ever in game development much before until now where every suits just find themselves needing this to succeed for some reason.

Anyway, don't care what other people think but I will definitely not support any games with gen AI (even if it's used as "concepting" part because that's actually one of the important parts as well, and by using gen AI as base you poison the whole game as well anyway)

Like, if the dev is cheap enough to use gen AI instead, why should I care?

i think back to a thought i had after watching a solar sands essay on the idea:

if you are so lazy that you will try and save so much as 15 minutes on a creative art form, you are not an artist, and likely not even a real human.
it's hard to trust the artistic integrity of someone who wants such shortcuts, even in otherwise very talented studios, especially as we hit a point where people tend to just lie about using genai. how do i trust that only placeholder assets used ai (let alone that placeholders are not that hard to find and i have no idea why you'd be so mentally bankrupt as to not just use free stock photos or sketch something basic)

the ai problem has kinda shifted my view on artistic mediums. i'll gladly take art that's low quality over genai, because now i understand they at least had the mental strength to actually want to make art and not join the group trying to squeeze every last bit of humanity out of it.

I'm sick of constantly hearing about AI and don't want anything to do with it, but that's just not possible as tech companies are constantly shoving it down our throats. I won't be supporting any games that use generative AI. It just feels like a middle finger to artists, writers, coders et cetera. I'd rather play a game by an amateur artist than a game by AI. Just a simple stick figure made in twenty seconds would be more pleasant to look at than an AI image. Also, it's taking up so much energy and is increasing tech prices.

It doesnt matter. its not about using it, its how its used. finesse matters.

I do not care about AI usage at all. If you are a software dev and you aren’t using it, you are being left behind by those who do. The genie is not going back in the bottle.

It’s like being anti-photoshop in the 90s because the gatekeeping touch up artists and graphic artists couldn’t charge insane prices for their work that kept everyone else from being able to touch up photos or create cover art.

Early photoshop work also was terrible and obvious (lens flares everywhere) until it matured and it was great. Eventually the tech matures and it’s indistinguishable and become industry standard at all levels.

All the people screeching about AI are also using AI and just using mental gymnastics to justify why it’s okay for them and not an indie game dev.

Why dont you both ask Google's AI what the environmental impact of AI is?

Here, I've done it for you 👍

https://share.google/aimode/1FnEcHSU81T3FJUUZ

"High Energy Demand: AI data centers run continuously and require immense power. Generative AI queries consume significantly more electricity than traditional web searches. Daily use accounts for the vast majority (80% to 90%) of this energy demand.

Carbon Emissions: Many data centers rely on local power grids fueled by coal and natural gas. This increases greenhouse gas emissions and worsens global climate change.

Water Scarcity: Servers generate extreme heat and require millions of gallons of fresh water for cooling systems. This diversion strains local water supplies, particularly in drought-prone regions.Hardware and

Mining Footprint: Manufacturing high-performance computer chips and GPUs requires toxic chemicals, dirty mining for critical minerals, and large amounts of energy, which leads to habitat loss and electronic waste."

BTW Plenty of "genies" have gone "back in the bottle" after public outcry, lack of profit, and government regulation did their job. ✌️

It's obviously plagiarism and is being used to replace jobs so its so inherently, obviously bad in both a (sane world) legal and moral stance that any positives are completely nullified by it and the baby should in fact be thrown out with the bathwater on this one.

I do feel bad for both the actually justifiable things with coding and whatnot that have been re-branded as AI to add to the marketing as part of this terrible trend that will probably mostly die by the end of the decade and the people forced to potentially hurt their reputation by putting a bare minimum use of it to appease their awful, stupid bosses.

Also even beyond all moral and legal justifications, all AI stuff ****ing sucks on the face of it and stopped being remotely fun as soon as it became partially sometimes competent. It was only fun when it was a complete hilarious disaster that didn't remotely resemble anything, but now even random people genuinely trying to put out fun, "none replacing humans" AI stuff is genuinely awful trash that is completely unentertaining on any level.

And this is my kindest thoughts on it.

@-wc- Told you! You complain about it but you still use it. Now we just need you to justify why it’s okay for you and not for them and my prophecy will be complete!

I’m all for not wanting a ton of data centers as it will force more efficient ways to create models. Combustion engines, electricity production, batteries and refrigeration all used to be wasteful, dangerous and polluting until public outcry forced producers to improve them.

@kkslider5552000 It’s only plagiarism if it’s a direct copy. Using existing art as a framework for learning how to create your own is the exact way every other artist in ever medium learned how to do it. If AI can only create derivative work, the only people who would be displaced are ones creating derivative work. If you’re always creating fresh and original work, you will always have value in the marketplace regardless of what AI does.

Technology eventually shifts all jobs. Your freezer at home put all the guys who were cutting blocks of ice and shipping them to ice chests in the south out of work. Light bulbs put the guys manufacturing gas lighting and candles out of work. Grocery stores put the milk men out of work. Streaming put video store employees out of work. Calculators put the people who would do computations by hand out of work. It’s literally the way progress has always worked.

@Cuddleheart

All I did was google it, the AI writeup is compulsory.

what you are saying essentially is that anyone who is concerned about the environment but has produced a single piece of trash in their life is a disingenuous hypocrite. an obvious fallacy.

"Using existing art as a framework for learning how to create your own is the exact way every other artist in ever medium learned how to do it."

You've lost credibility by accidentally revealing that you believe AI is an artist.

"Combustion engines, electricity production, batteries and refrigeration all used to be wasteful, dangerous and polluting until public outcry forced producers to improve them."

precisely what we are doing, here. by your own admission these things only become reigned in as a result of public outcry.

PS - serious question, who told you combustion engines, electricity production, and batteries aren't dangerous and polluting?

even if the genie is out of the bottle, i do not give a ***** if it is or if it'll keep me from being economically viable!

i am not at the whims of your product you're forcing on me. stop it.

The same arguments people made for NFTs in games are being made for AI in games. These saps never went away and they're always on standby to get conned again and again.
