I just registered 10 minutes ago, yay! But I've been watching the site as a guest for quite a while now...
Anyway, as you know, you can play DS games on your 3DS in their native resolution by holding START+SELECT while booting the game. It tells you that in the operations manual. However, I noticed that somewhere else in the manual it says you can play in the original resolution by holding start OR select, not both, while booting the game. I have also known for a while that you can hold start+select RIGHT AFTER booting the game and it will also work. So I decided to run a little test. I tried booting a DS game in 6 ways:
1: Holding BOTH buttons WHILE booting the game, as the manual instructs
2: Holding BOTH buttons RIGHT AFTER booting the game
3: Holding ONLY START WHILE booting the game
4: Holding ONLY START RIGHT AFTER booting the game
5: Holding ONLY SELECT WHILE booting the game
6: Holding ONLY SELECT RIGHT AFTER booting the game
The first 2 combinations are already known to work. However, I found that all 6 of the above cause the game to boot into its native resolution. So now I just hold select while booting the game and it works perfectly.
Just a little tip for you in case you were getting tired of having to hold both start+select while tapping "open" (or hitting A.)

If the 3DS has not been discontinued SM3DL and MK7 are awesome games, but if the 3DS has been discontinued Sony has taken over the world. It is not true that both Sony has taken over the world and SM3DL and MK7 are not awesome games. Therefore:Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are...

I can barely see what I'm doing in the original resolution. It makes the games look so tiny it's like playing on a wrist watch.
If only you could switch it without shrinking the image down.
I really don't notice alot of difference when playing DS games on 3DS. They look alright to me the normal way.

^^ This. I don't see much difference either. I swear I think some people get out their trusty magnifying glasses just so they can gripe about graphics sometimes.

When I close my eyes, I see pixilated blood.

Good to see I'm not the only one who isn't bothered by it.
After playing the 3DS it's hard to go back to games on the regular DS. They look all pixely and ugly in comparison.
I guess some people are really attached to that look.

I used to always play in the original resolution. It's not really that small (4/5 the size in each direction compared to the DS lite) but recently I tried playing with upscaled graphics, and they actually look sharper than the original resolution IMO. Although its probably because I can't see the individual pixels when playing upscaled for some reason, which makes the graphics look less blocky.

Only thing I notice is that the graphics aren't as bright (only slightly), the same goes with it being a tad blurry...not a big deal to me, other than that they do look the same. Tried the original resolution mode too...ugh, lol.

Awesome post, thanks for this. I'm in Link79's boat though... The original resolution is too small for me. For now I'm sticking to playing my DS games on my DS lite. :3

Samholy

great tip. ill compare soon enough !
but so far, i play all my ds game without that trick.
picross 3D is the blurriest one so far, so i will probably play this one in its native resolution

currently playing:
Final Fantasy IV DS
Ratchet and clank All4One
3DS : Sam : 3050-7590-3005

Vinstigator

I prefer to play it without changing the resolutions. I tried it before and it just showed me how small the DS screens used to be. My how times have changed...

Nice to know! Even though I hardly ever play DS games in their native resolution anyway. The upscale doesn't bother me in the slightest.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Does anyone know if Nintendo fixed the default 2DS resolution issue with the initial 3DS firmware update. I downloaded the update before ever playing any 2DS games in my console and every game has automatically started up with the 256 x 192 resolution since I got it. I've never had to do a Start/Select boot yet and the games look exactly like they do on my DS Lite. Can anyone definitively confirm this? If so, then how can I play the games in full screen if I wanted to? Thanks.
