@EliPro No, they just said they didn't have any plans YET for a re-designed 3DS.
When the DS Phat came out, they said "okay, we got it out the door but we can still work on it and improve it this way." But with the 3DS launch they don't YET have plans on how to develop a redesign. That doesn't mean they wont, at some point, which they almost certainly will.

Stop complaining and GO PLAY GAMES.

Nintendo already confirmed no 3ds lite. Ever. Seriously. They said it has to many features to pack into a smaller space.

Haha, it's cute that you believed them! xD

No, but what they actually said (rather subtly), was that the current 3DS is packed with stuff, and they used the lessons they learned from earlier models to optimize internal use of space. So, no, they don't have any plans for the immediate future to upgrade. Except for the fact that it makes them boatloads of cash every time, so yeah, you can count on it happening. They just need to use smaller/more efficient components, and get some more R&D into it. Voila! 3DS Lite. It'll probably look prettier, too.

3DS. Just buy the iPad 3 when it launches in 6 months with incremental improvements that its praised for for some odd reason :/ Or better yet, forget about iPad completely Seriously though, go with 3DS!

That or he can wait for the 3DS lite in the next 12 months!

The difference there is that I can guarantee that there will be a new iPad in 6 months time. The 3DS is already very small, light and thin. It would be naive to assume there will never be an upgraded model but the DS Lite came two years after the original and then the DSi almost three years after that. It's not like Nintendo just churn out hardware revisions.

It's not a reason not to buy and iPad. The way that product cycle works is a new model doesn't obsolete an old model. You don't miss out on much if you skip a generation or two of iProduct releases.

I won't be buying the iPad 2 because I have the iPad. I'll still get 99% of the functionality, and then when the iPad 3 rolls around I'll buy that.

iPad 2 buyers will just wait for the iPad 4 or 5. It's not like you need to buy each and every version.

But I would say at the minimum, the iPad gets one full-featured, genuinely good game for every one DS/ PSP/ Wii/ PS3/ Xbox 360 game that is released.

Do you want a system mainly to play games? Get a 3DS. Not every type of game is best suited to touch/tilt controls. If you like platformers, for example, the iPad will do absolutely NOTHING for you. The 3DS offers those control options plus buttons/analog. Games will be more expensive on the 3DS, but retail games can also be larger, and Nintendo first party titles at least will be much more polished. If all you want is a gaming device, the 3DS will give you that in a cheaper package.

Do you want to be able to have a computer on the go - ebook reading, web surfing, games, light word processing, various apps used for your work/fun, vocie chat with friends, along with games as well (basically a mini-computer). Get an iPad. If you need that computer functionality, then there are plenty of high quality games on the app store to spend your time with, and the iPad will serve you well.

@Waltz - Australia's getting ripped off if the 3DS price is compatible to the iPad. The iPad starts at $500 in the US (with the 3DS at $250). Definitely not comparable prices.

@OP The iTouch starts at around $200, and does a lot the iPad does, so if you're on a budget that could be something you could look into. If you already have an iPhone or iTouch, I wouldn't waste your money on an iPad, there's not much more the iPad does over the iPhone/iTouch 4.

Have you had a good, proper look at the games available on iPad?

I think the closer truth is that the better machine for games depends on what kind of games you like to play.

For board games, strategy games and indie games, the iPad is the better choice. When it comes to casual gaming, sports games and RPGs, the iPad and 3DS will be roughly comparable. For heavy-action games and platformers, the 3DS will be better because of those buttons (I shudder at the thought of playing a Warriors iPad game, for instance).

There's also the potential for 3D to create new game experiences. We just don't know how that's going to work out yet.

It really isn't a cut-and-dry decision, even if you consider the iPad exclusively as a gaming device. There are some genres that it just does better.

That's about right. The iPad is about twice as expensive (at entry level) as the 3DS. Given functionality, though they're roughly equivilent in terms of value for money, though.

I said it before, and I'll say it again...That's what they want you to THINK. Some form of a new 3DS version will come out soon, even if it isn't Lite. Could be an XL, or one that will some how be a Blu-Ray player. (lol I dunno, you get the point. xD)

Pfff, iPads are pretty stupid. I've thought so ever since the first one was announced to be released, so I'd definitely say 3DS. But if Apple ever announced the release of a 5G iPod Touch I'd toss my 3DS out the window... :3

I've realised a ROI on my iPad investment at least ten times over since buying it. So no, it's not expensive solely on brand and personality. I don't use my computers at home now, except for highly specialised tasks that the iPad cannot handle, but writing reports, articles, email, working from home - almost all done on iPad.

You use your iPad for work? Do you have a special stand with a keyboard for it? I have an iPad, and I can't imagine working on it, because I hate typing on it. It's so awkward for me to type on a flat screen. I'm glad it's working out for you, though. I like using it to browse websites when I don't want to be at my desk. Also, I really like it as an eReader, which surprised me. I've checked out the Kindle, Nook, and Sony eReader, and one thing that I really hate was the flash when you flipped the page. There isn't a flash with the iPad. It's like reading a PDF on your computer - the page turns are really smooth. I haven't had any issues with eyestrain.

Anyway - for the OP - I think your decision depends on what you want to use it for. The 3DS and iPad2 are just totally different devices.

You mentioned that everyone at your school has an iPod Touch. Can't you get a 3DS and an iPod Touch for the price of an iPad2? You can store your music on the iPod Touch, plus you would get access to Facetime and apps over WiFi, if you're interested in those things.

The iPad is for a completely different purpose than the iPhone. It's like saying "Why get that big 50-inch LCD TV when you've got a radio?"

I don't know if this is a very good analogy. to be fair, it's more like "why get that 50 inch LCD TV when you already have a 14 inch LCD TV". But I agree with you, the Ipad is great for books and games and things I wouldn't have nearly as much fun doing on my Iphone. And I agree with everyone that has said just get a 3DS and an Ipad. They're simply different toys. It's a big price difference though. Let's just say I'm much more eager to upgrade my DS to a 3DS than my Ipad to an Ipad 2.

Oh okay, I see your reasoning. Because the technology for the 3DS is 'new' (which is isn't) and the iPad 2's is 'old' (again, it's not) that's enough reason to choose between two completely different devices. I see.

Ok... lemme refrase. 3DS has a 3 in it. I pad2 has a 2 in it. 3 > 2.
