I don't think this is the right way to go for nintendo. Businesswise it makes sense, obviously but its not really customer-friendly, no matter if its bigger than awakening or not.
However, nintendo is in the financial position to make it happen! - somehow... As a matter of fact, I would buy the new nintendo console no matter if its backwards compatible or not. But still, it would be pretty convenient to run all those games that I have amassed on the new system... it would also be a nice incentive for all other gamers who already invested in nintedo games...
It certainly needs backwards compatibility! - that would make it to have a huge software library right from the start. If the console is a hybrid - I expect bc with all wii/wii u games and all 3ds/ds games
