EVO 2022 kicks off later this week and as part of this Sony has announced a new live show featuring "exciting content and reveals".
According to IGN, publishers and developers like Capcom, Warner Bros., Bandai Namco, Arc System Works, and SNK will all be participating in the show. While some fans appear to have been expecting a possible announcement about the next Mortal Kombat game, it seems this won't be happening.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has seemingly shut down speculation of this via social media - going on to state how it's time for Street Fighter and "other great fighting games" to be in the sun.
Of course, this is social media we're talking about here, and sometimes, it just won't take "no" for an answer - with some fans now wondering if Warner Bros. could deliver an Injustice announcement instead.
Although Mortal Kombat announcements apparently won't be happening, Mortal Kombat 11 has been confirmed as part of the EVO 2022 game roster. Nintendo has also withdrawn Super Smash Bros. from the event.
Earlier this year, Mortal Kombat 12 was seemingly teased by a NetherRealm producer. Some sources have also suggested NetherRealm would prioritise this next entry over another superhero fighter.
If we hear any updates, we'll let you know.

MK11 is one of my biggest regret buys on the Switch. Looks absolutely horrible and runs bad, plus I'm not sure I ever finished more than 3 matches online due to NSO being such a horrible turd and always disconnecting me when it wasn't just constantly lagging.
@SteamEngenius You actually got the game to launch a match? Mine kept crashing out and wouldn't download the full games content. With Warner Brothers support just being pretty much 'haha we got your money suck it up'. (Note physical UK copy).
Sega brought Virtua Fighter 5 back for nothing. That game doesn't even get a slot at EVO and it's a PS4 exclusive too. What a shame Sony and Sega. Yeah let's not put the game that our partner exclusively gave us at our own show and just promote more anime fighting games instead.
Sounds like coping, and you could just say the next mortal Kombat is 2 years away ,minimum.
@SteamEngenius That's false. MK11 got a great port on Switch, one of the best I must say. The developers knew what they were doing. Unless you are playing in portable mode using wi-fi which is a subpar experiece regardless of the game.
@GhostDaddy - Not like it matters either way, MK11 was announced on its own little event showcase. MK12 can easily be teased elsewhere in the same fashion, sans EVO.
@Paraka wasn't Mk11 annouced at the Game Awards one year?
MK11 is one of only a few games I've ever played for more than a few months before I decided I was done.
In fact, I played it online and offline for 2 Solid years, only 3 to 5 games have had that kind of hold on me since the late 90s. Absolutely love it, it even took MK2 and MK3s place as my favorite MK.
I have Street Fighter 4 and 5 and put a small bit of time into them but ultimately their style and gameplay isn't really my cup of tea, but I do love that they are content packed and I admit they are fun in a casual play style.
I'm thinking about getting SF6 and seeing what I can do when I put more effort into learning the game as MK and Smash are the only fighters I played a lot.
Edit: it mostly depends when MK12 is announced and released on whether I go hardcore-ish in SF6. I'm hoping not until at least 2024 but I'll take it sooner if they're working on it now.
Not sure why this is that disappointing to some, they're obviously going to make another Mortal Kombat game in the near future. I can only imagine how good it's gonna look on current gen hardware, MK11 was seriously impressive.
It's the 30th anniversary of Mortal Kombat, yet they can't even re-release old arcade roms for that occasion? WB is run by idiots
@SwitchVogel it's disappointing because it's the 30th anniversary of the series and WB/NRS does literally nothing with it. When was the last time they re-released their old arcade games? Like 11 years ago? Or their PS2 games, why were they never remastered? Where's the MK9 remaster?
@SteamEngenius I restarted my game collection with the Switch 4 years ago. MK11 is the only game I've traded in.
Edit to add I then rebought it on Xbox SX and the Ultimate version looks and plays stunningly well.
He's such a great guy. MK will always be my number 1 fighting series.
I hope they do a new Primal Rage and War God's next
@SteamEngenius yeah I check see if there's been an update to improve performance everytime I go on my switch but nope looks like they've abandoned it
Just never gelled with MK11 (not Switch). That said, I can wait for the next MK. There's plenty of fighters out ATM and good ones at that. Would love to see NRS do another Injustice or even something totally new before MK12.
Banking on Scorpion and Sub-Zero to be announced for MultiVersus during EVO
