A brand new trailer for Bayonetta 3 has been release, confirming that the game will launch on October 28th, 2022.
The trailer itself features familiar characters along with a brand new playable character called Viola. It also looks like Bayonetta will be able to dress up in various absurd costumes as she battles a new human-made threat known as the "Homunculi".
A Bounty of Bayonettas: Meet a veritable coven of Bayonettas, each more fabulous than the last, while fighting through the streets of Tokyo, the mountains of China and beyond! Along the way, find out if this arcane alliance can really save humanity and what fate awaits this bunch of Bayonettas.
Rough Up Rivals as Viola: In addition to Bayonetta, players will also control the feisty witch-in-training Viola, who is ready to unleash hell on the Homunculi with her sword and her capricious companion, the feline demon Cheshire.
Nintendo has also confirmed a special edition of the game for retail which will include an art book and three reversible sleeves for the entire Bayonetta trilogy, with more details and pre-order information confirmed for the future:
A Trinity Masquerade Edition will also be available via select retailers and the My Nintendo Store! Get up close and personal with the beauties and beasts of Bayonetta 3 with a full-color 200-page art book, and display the whole Bayonetta trilogy with three reversible game cases, one for each title*, that combine to form stunning panoramic artwork. More details about the Trinity Masquerade Edition and pre-orders will be revealed in the future.

October is shaping up to be a pretty busy month.
Looking good. Now hopefully they release a trilogy pack so I can refresh my memory of the first and actually play through the second game
They really couldn’t have done a Direct??
Nintendo: "Direct? Never heard of her"
Can't believe its actually releasing.. Also I like how they just casually announced this without any direct or anything lol.
not sure how i feel about multiverses kind of being the Big Thing in media lately (last 5-6 years especially) this seems to be another one? jurys out right now
edit: that description seems to all but confirm it's something like that. will be interesting, but it feels like it's kind of losing its novelty
This is when I thought it would release (because of Halloween) before the Partner Showcase announced Nier Automata (another PlatinumGames game) for October 6th and Sparks of Hope (a big Switch exclusive) for October 20th. Seems odd to have all 3 clashing so close together.
In any case the trailer looks very good, really excited for this.
After hearing several rumours about certain games being shelved due to current world events, I wonder if Nintendo just split the Direct up into individual announcements?
This is my most anticipated game of the year.
@Kiz3000 1 & 2 are already on Switch though, no need for a new trilogy pack.
Nintendo stomped the competition this year. It wasn't even close.
watch as Advance Wars somehow makes it out by the end of the year the only game being delayed out of 2022 will be BOTW 2
There ya have it. Looking superb just suspected it would.
Viola is to Virgil as Bayonetta is to Dante.
Who cares about how they announce things?? Whether it's announced in a direct or not makes zero difference to the final game or your level of enjoyment.
@Gamer83
Nintendo’s having a great year, but so far nothing they’ve put out comes anywhere close to the quality of Elden Ring.
I just want to pre-order the normal physical version please, it's disappeared from Amazon.co.uk which used to have just a place holder.
Weirdly was looking on Nintendo Store website and registered my "Interest" in Bayo 3 this morning as I forgot you could do that.
I'm sure my electricity bill will be absolutely terrifying by October....but Bayonetta is worth it! It looks great
@RushDawg Dante and Virgil? Quite comedic. Or divine?
Nice, so glad this is coming in 2022. The trailer is epic.
@Inc I feel the same way. Idk why so many people are up in arms about where/how they heard about this or any game. The "concern" they show is typically disingenuous.
With the slew of announcements over the last few days, a Direct before September is looking less likely.
This looks amazing. This along with Nier Automata, No Mans Sky & Persona 5 Royal is making October an incredible month. My wallet will not be happy.
Buying it. Defo.
@Rambler
I was referring to the characters from the Devil May Cry games. I’m embarrassed to admit, I never made the connection to Dante’s Inferno until you pointed it out. Looks like I need to read more and game less!
YES!!!!
My body is ready! Xenoblade Chronicles 3 this month, Bayonetta 3 in Ocotober! My Switch will finally get used again (hasn't really gotten use since Metroid Dread).
HYPEEEEE so many games coming out this year that will keep me busy for a loooong time
Sorry to keep you waiting!- Said some angel.
But i cant wait this is looking great. Plenty of time to play 1 and 2 again before release
@somebread yeah totally agree. I am still looking forward to this game but the story just feels super generic. I thought we will have some interesting main villain and characters, and even Bayonetta looks like a kid compared to 1&2 where she was really sexy. So for me, the design feels like a step back and story just lame, but the gameplay will be amazing for sure, I just hope they manage to release an amazing game that will top previous two games.
I need the LE.
A mighty need!
Good Lord October is one heck of a month. From No More Heroes 3 getting released on current-gen to Persona and now to THIS? Heck, even PlayStation folks have Dad of War 2 coming out during the spooky season.
@Inc It does make a difference for me. Even if the end product is the exact same I'm way more hyped if I see those things announced live in a Direct instead of reading on Twitter or a news site about it
between this, Kirby, and other coming stuff - why couldn't they just do a Direct?
This is like a week separated from P5R and Mario+Rabbids 2 :/
@StarPoint They already did a Direct two weeks ago if I am not mistaken.
Awesome and also a physical release of Bayonetta 1. I might just double dip and get the entire trilogy in physical releases.
@PepperMintRex November not October
So the leak was real.
Game of the year for me right here.
Nice, will be a good get for trick or treats.
Insta-buy. The trailer has me even more interested & enthused now! Loved the first two in the series
@RushDawg Thank God, they've put out better games than Dark Souls 6, er I mean Eldin Ring. One of the most overrated games.
2:18 pretty cool they got tilda swinton for this!
Nice, day one for me
Glad we are finally getting news but I've gotta echo everyone else here, why TF could this not have been organized in a neat little Direct?!
Welp October is gonna rock this year!
@Mr_Gamecube Yep I agree 2022 is the best year for Switch imo.
well now I need new underwear.
Looks good. I will definitely get to it eventually. My Fall is pretty crowded at this point though. Got some tough game choices to make!
Why does it seem like not many people are interested in this game? They just unveiled a new trailer and a release date after years of silence, and the level of excitement is a bit underwhelming. Maybe Bayonetta is not nearly as popular as I thought it was.
I'm just shocked it's actually coming out this year. I should probably replay the first two games before October now
Its hard to put some videos together and call it a Direct
Looks really good, I think I'll have to get the previous games to really get into the franchise.
Man does this look good. IS there really any other game in this genre than can match Bayo? Also to all those whose wallets are crying in Oct......just remember the 4th QTR is money time for Nintendo and other game publishers. All these games hitting are to make sure there are lots of options for the big holiday spending spree. Still OCT may be the most packed month in Switch's illustrious history. Now if we could just get ADV Wars 1+2 before years end then all my gaming dreams will come true. It absurd to hold a cartoon war strategy game because of real war in the world. News flash....there is almost always conflict happening somewhere in the world, and if they're gonna wait until this Ukraine mess is over they are likely going to be waiting a long time as if history is any guide this conflict will be going on for years.
hmm... October 28th... I will be busy playing Persona 5
Ready and waiting, looking forward to dusting the old Switch off to play this. Enjoyed the trailer, looks like it has some fantastic set pieces just like the first two games, couldn't really ask for more. Bayonetta actually allowing the demons to co-host with her is great, but leaves me feeling perhaps she will end up being a boss, as the demons don't always behave.
In fact it all going wrong midway, leaving Viola to face off against demonically controlled Bayo and Jeanne could be the order of the day. Got a feeling this one's going to be big.
this game is on the back burner for me to many other games i prefer first i am mostly in rpg games..
I can't wait to get this game and change that default costume, looks like she came out of alt candy land
This one feels a lot different than the other two, but I am excited.
I preordered Bayonetta 3 and Metroid 4 on August 27, 2018 along with Fire Emblem Three Houses. Finally I will get that sweet sweet 20% discount that Amazon stopped offering shortly after I preordered!
Metroid 4 2024!
@Kevember
I mean..there is a reason why Nintendo basically had to rescue the brand after the first game.
It's a niche game...even if that niche is relatively big.
Looks good. Not sure how I feel about all the characters.
I really hope they don't pull a DMC4 / MGS2 with Viola. She doesn't look nearly as cool as Bayonetta.
I really don't get why we are still banging the Direct drum? We didn't get one. Yes, that's unusual for June and E3... but no, it really doesn't mean we expect one every single week. The next Direct is September.
Bayonetta 3 should have been in a Direct?! It was already in a Direct... this is a trailer confirming the release date. Thats not unheard of. Are we all going to be similarly shocked when Mario Kart DLC gets announced on Twitter next week?! We really shouldn't.
2022 is done. It has been done for a while. Xenoblade 3, Splatoon 3, Rabbids, Bayonetta 3 and Pokemon. It isn't the most amazing lineup, but it really isn't bad. At all.
In fact, you look at it and you start to realise Nintendo must have known about BotW2 not making 2022 for quite some time, because where is the BotW2 gap in 2022? December?! I don't think so. Makes me excited for BotW2 as it shows they've been working on something for a long time - well, excited because I assume it's something that makes the game better... not fixing issues or polish!
So yes, September is the big one. Expect BotW2 title and maybe date, expect Mario (movie and game) and/or Donkey Kong - but don't expect any of it to land this side of the New Year.
Oh, and I still firmly believe a Switch Lite OLED alongside Pokemon is going to happen. That could get announced before September.
@RushDawg Maybe this is all just opinions but I'll be honest on a percentage level of how long I played the game versus how much I enjoyed it I believe I liked Kirby more than Elden Ring this year.
It may not have a budget nearing anything what they spent on Elden Ring but that game was so fundamentally flawed in so many ways I think it's unbelievable it got the amounts of enormous praise it got. Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro are still miles above that game, but as I said that's just my opinion.
I've already posted enough criticisms about Elden Ring on the Soulsbourne thread on the NL forums, but I will say it's unfair to say nothing Nintendo put out is near the quality of Elden Ring. The only real way you can quantify that is by looking at the Metascores...I guess?
Kirby was a game which took me approximately 90 hours less to complete, but I didn't feel like it was a chore by the end of those hours, I enjoyed it the whole way through. Unfortunately for me, a chore is precisely what Elden Ring was.
Then again, different strokes for different folks.
Now I know what I'm going to buy my son for his birthday hehehehe. Looks way better than the previous two. The wait is almost over.
Mayhaps this is an alternate dimension where the characters have horrible fashion sense and wear ugly make up in which case, go back. Please go back
@Judal27 The character designs look fine. Stop trying to find something negative to say about the game. Everything that was shown is a step up from the previous games which I already like.
@somebread Ieam, Bayonetta already heavily depends on time travel in both games. It's not a leap to include a multiverse. I mean, there's already multiple versions of characters present in 1 and especially in 2.
@Gamer83
It has been an exceptionally great year for Switch, hasn't it?
Triangle Strategy was a banger. I wasn't expecting that after Bravely Default 2 and Octopath (I like those games, but they're not masterpiece caliber).
Switch Sports was also a must have I've been begging for these past 5 years. Can't wait for golf to release.
Mario Strikers had some issues with lacking content, but it's still a fun game.
Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes is incredible. WAY better than I was expecting. Like, just as good as Three Houses. I'm impressed.
Portal Companion Collection is a dream come true. Been my holy grail for 10 years now ever since I bought Vita on launch day.
Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak is... let's just say it's in my top 5 favorite games of all time. Maybe my #1 but I'm not ready to declare that just yet.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 previews are hype. It sounds like it's going to be a classic.
Splatoon 3 is also hype. Splatoon is one of my absolute favorite games. I recently started a new save file in Splatoon 2 on my OLED, and "just start a quick save file" turned into 100 hr binge in no time.
Live A Live is a nice little score. Not as good as Triangle Strategy from what I played, but still good, and many are excited for it.
Bayonetta 3 is now slated for October, and with 2 being my fave action game I'm more than ready
Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope is also October. First game was fire. I expect nothing less here.
Persona 5 Royal, Nier Automata and No Man's Sky are all coming to Switch in October as well. How long have we been asking for these games on Switch? It still feels surreal.
Harvestella looks like the Rune Factory 5 we should have gotten. I'm actually kind of blown away by how good this game looks.
Dragon Quest Treasures is releasing this year too. I love DQ spinoffs! Looks very similar to DQ Monsters.
Pokemon Scarlet + Violet actually look like a true step forward for the series. The graphics comparisons between the same mon in Sword + Shield is night and day. After Arceus, I'm actually excited for this. Here's to hoping you can still throw Pokeballs with gyro aiming.
And there's so much more on the way. Diofield Chronicles looks great. Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core looks great. We've got new title updates for Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak on the way.
Ppl keep saying this year has been lame, and I'm like.... not if you're a Switch owner! This year is off the rails!
All those Direct beggars btfo lmao
that special edition looks sick.
I've had Bayonetta 3 on preorder since December 2017. The longest time I've ever had a game preordered. I can't wait to finally play it.
What a year it’s shaping up to be for Nintendo.
If I was a PS5 owner I’d be feeling pretty sick right now!
@Judal27 salty PS5 owner by any chance?!
Hey, dear scalpers get ready...
@mariomaster96 We've all been hyped about something in our lives so I understand. It's still kind of bizarre if you think about it though.
@Joker1234 good for you mate. Game itself looks fine to me too. Doesn't change how hilarious the characters look this time around lol
@Kevember
Just curious. How are you measuring excitement levels?
Absolutely smashing!
@michellelynn0976
They really haven't. Elden Ring captured the broader gaming community in a way that no other Nintendo game this year has come close to. Heck, you'd have to go back to 2017 with Breath of the Wild (and maaaaaybe Super Mario Odyssey) to see a Nintendo game that had the kind of impact Elden Ring had.
Elden Ring is pretty much a lock for Game of the Year 2022 and no Nintendo game this year will be a serious contender.
It's cool if Elden Ring isn't for you (no game is for everyone), but looking at things objectively, Nintendo doesn't have any games on the same level as Elden Ring this year.
OMG!!! The game was real after all! /s
@Varkster
Sorry Elden Ring wasn't your cup of tea. I personally loved Kirby as well, though it hasn't captured me the way Elden Ring has.
Putting our personal opinions aside though, surely you agree that Elden Ring is almost certainly going to sweep the Game of the Year awards this year. Nintendo just doesn't have a "big" game o the same level as Elden Ring this year.
I guess this really is the new normal for Nintendo announcements now. A minute trailer announcements instead of a 40 minute presentation announcing everything at the same time. RIP Nintendo Directs
The Elden Ring Vs Kirby debate is what the NL comments section is all about.
I'm not going to share my view on this... just carry on as you were.
@Orokosaki
I'm a PS5 owner. Why would Bayo 3 getting a release date make me feel sick?
Bayo 3 will be a great experience for me before I play GoW Ragnarok. Plus I'll be playing Resident Evil 4 Remake, Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 and Final Fantasy 16 on my PS5 next year. Lots to look forward to.
It's not 1994 anymore. Leave this silly console wars stuff in the past where it belongs and let people enjoy games for whatever platform or platforms they own.
@nocdaes
LOL. Only on Nintendo Life could there be such a debate!
Personally, I can totally understand why one person would prefer Kirby over Elden Ring or vice versa.
Putting our personal opinions aside though, I think any reasonable person would agree that Elden Ring is the front runner for Game of the Year 2022 and that Kirby (as great as it is) is not a serious contender.
@KingBowser
There is no normal with Nintendo!
In 2020, we got announcements like this with Paper Mario and Hyrule Warriors AoC. Plus we got a bunch of Nintendo Partner Showcase Mini Directs.
On the other hand, 2021 was a much more "normal" year with a full Nintendo Direct in February, June and September.
2022 has been a weird mix of 2020 and 2021 so far, with a February Direct and no full June Direct.
Going forward, who knows what we'll see? For what it's worth, I expect there will be an E3 Direct in 2023 with E3 returning next year.
@RushDawg console wars will go on until the end of time!
@JaxonH
Yeah, I'm going to have to pick and choose what to get the remainder of the year (XC 3 and Bayo 3 are the for-sure buys), but that's a good 'problem' to have.
A proper Direct would still be nice.
@RushDawg
Putting our personal opinions aside though, I think any reasonable person would agree that Elden Ring is the front runner for Game of the Year 2022 and that Kirby (as great as it is) is not a serious contender.
While I agree Elden Ring is a lock and nothing from Nintendo this year will challenge it, I also find such discussion utterly pointless. Games are entertainment. Just because one game hits it off more with popularity doesn't mean it's "objectively better". It's all opinion at the end of the day. Elden Ring is a good game, and I admit I liked it more than Dark Souls because it didn't force you to fight certain bosses that were frustrating. But it still lost my interest after a few hours. No matter how good the graphics are, its essentially just another Souls game to me, which are dime a dozen these days. I've never liked Souls games much. Too frustrating. So while I acknowledge it's a finely crafted game and certainly popular, touting it's GotY award lock just seems like silly console warring to me.
As far as I'm concerned, Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak is one of the greatest video games of all time, and easily in my top 5 shortlist. I also suspect Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will be one of the best JRPGs Ive ever played, as the first and X is. And I suspect Splatoon 3 will be even better than 2, and Splatoon 2 is in my top 20 of all time. Portal 1/2 are in my top 5 best games of all time and those just dropped also. Persona 5 Royal and Nier Automata also top 20, both dropping this Oct. Bayonetta 2 is my fave action game of all time. I expect Bayo 3 to surpass it (hopefully). Mario Rabbids is one of my favorite Strategy games, and the new one looks even better. Triangle Strategy is arguably my favorite grid based strategy title ever, tied with Fire Emblem Awakening and Three Houses. Speaking of which, even Fire Emblem Warriors Three Houses was way more fun to me than Elden Ring.
Thats not to knock Elden Ring. I understand it's appeal, and frankly I think it deserves GotY just because of how many ppl like it. But that's still not objective fact. And for many Switch gamers, there are at least a dozen games this year that rank well above Elden Ring. Because different ppl like different things.
I just don't get what you're trying to accomplish by insisting others acknowledge Elden Ring is "better". It's not. Many ppl prefer it, but on the flip side many don't. It's a great game and if it's your thing I'm happy for you. Enjoy. But believe me, I'm happier with the Switch lineup this year than any game console I've ever owned, and I've owned them all (and do own them all- I have PS5, XSX, PC, Steamdeck and Switch OLED).
Bayonetta meets no more heroes.
I’m missing the angels and demons in the trailer to be honest.
Well, personally speaking I would like a full-on Nintendo Direct. To each their own, but Bayonetta has never remotely interested me.
Only XB3 deserved a direct. Only the best games deserve them
@Grumblevolcano Dateman! I'm just calling you that now.😉 (Don't worry not really, I bother you enough as it is😁)
Wow just watched the vid, holy crud there's like a whole full game in there. Hope Amazon remembers my pre-order from December 2018, $10 off, only $50. 👍
Hey @JaxonH I think I finally found a game that can rival MHR graphics. Not quite as good but it's in the conversation. Even my wife was impressed by the trailer. May be day 1.
Fi-na-lly!! Time to redeem yourself Platinum! Trailer looks great, although the game doesn't look as colorful as Bayo 2 (I guess some people may prefer the darkness of the first one, but I loved the color of the second one).
Love this series, hate that it is stuck on Nintendo's crappy hardware. I'd love to see this in 4k at 60 fps.
Wow cool about time
Just need to pre order now
@rjejr
It does look good, doesn't it? Nice and crisp, too. They definitely squeezed more out of Switch with this than they did the Wii U with Bayonetta 2.
You always did like Bayonetta. That's good. I do too. Between this and Nier Automata that's two Platinum games on the hybrid handheld OLED in the same month! With Persona 5 Royal too (which I tried to get you into for so long, I've given up on that now). And Mario Rabbids. And No Man's Sky and Harvestella. All within 30 days. Absolutely insane lineup
BTW if you haven't played Portal 1/2 I highly recommend it. Only $20 for the pair, full 1080p 60 fps with gyro aiming. 2 of the greatest games ever made.
@Shredderlovespizza
So happy it's on Nintendo's amazing hardware. God knows I can't stand 4k when it means being tethered to a single screen. And even Steamdeck isn't a better option thanks to poor battery life and no OLED screen.
PlatinumGames really knows how to get the most out of Switch. This and Astral Chain take all the right choices artistically to hide hardware limitations. Looks superb!
@crudfish The amount of interactions Bayonetta related posts are receiving on places like Twitter and Instagram are not even close to what big announcements normally generate.
@nocdaes we still miss Nintendos holiday release don’t we? Nintendo always releases a game in november from their own studio alongside Pokemon. That would most probably been BOTW2 before it got delayed.
@JaxonH I played 1, maybe both, of the Portal games, I want to say years ago, on Steam. My kid is waiting on Persona Royal 5 so I could see me giving it a shot once we have it. Harvestella looks good but not day 1 good. I think my day 1 days are limited too whatever my kids want to play day 1, otherwise save $50 and wait for a sale. Oh yeah, Rabbids, I think that will be a Christmas gift for the fam, 3 of us played the first and all enjoyed it., I still need to play the Donkey Kong DLC. I should start that.
So many games, besides you needing to clone yourself you may have to rely on multiverse versions of you playing different games. 😂
@JaxonH I am not even talking about portability as that means nothing to me. I want the game to run well and look like a modern game, something this game won't be able to do. The trailer already showed backgrounds and textures that look 15 yrs old. I'd like to imagine a version on modern hardware and how amazing that would be.
3+ minutes is MORE than enough to see.. forget having a direct that focuses on it.. this game is going to be so over the top thirst quenching goodness!! throws money at screen!!!!!!!!!
@rjejr
It's so hard. I got really sucked into Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes, but had to backlog it when Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak dropped. And then Portal Companion Collection released- my dream games on Switch. Been wanting them handheld for 10 yrs! But couldn't play because Monster Hunter.
This may be the first Xenoblade Chronicles game I don't play day 1. I'll buy it day 1. Already got the CE. But I won't be able to play it. Not gonna be finished with Monster Hunter. And by the time I am finished (accounting for first title update next month) it'll be Splatoon 3 time. That may also be the first Splatoon game I don't play day one.
And then Persona 5 Royal, Nier Automata, Bayonetta 3, Mario Rabbids and Harvestella all in 30 days? Man... it's like every game I've been dying to get on Switch is all hitting at once.
I could legitimately not buy a single game in 2023, and be good all year long just catching up on backlog from 2022.
@Shredderlovespizza
[Shrugs]
Looks fine to me.
@Kiz3000
I need to finish 1, play 2, then this one.
I'm toward the end of 1 and I'm just burned out on it and kinda quit a while back. Guess it's time to get back into it.
@JaxonH That's fine, it doesn't to me. I can't go back to low res games. If you spend your time playing games with much higher resolution it sticks out. I think the game will likely play fine, but I cannot get past the looks. But Nintendo made this happen so its stuck forever with them.
Damn, game looks awesome as does the box art. October is looking STACKED for the Switch:
Nier
Persona 5
No Mans Sky
Mario+Rabbids
Bayonetta 3
Thank God I was born in October.
@Shredderlovespizza
I mean that's fine, everyone has their preferences. But then I have to wonder why you're here on a Switch fansite when it's a low cost portable system that isn't going to provide what you're looking for. All you're gonna do is complain about everything not being what you want and irritate members.
I play games at 4k 60 and have absolutely zero issues playing a lower res and lower framerate game afterward. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
should have been Oct 31st release date. I take a earlier date though ).
Also this and Sparks of hope in October going to be skint lol.
@Pillowpants got bayonetta 2 and one was digital only free wih 2, no physical release of one on switch as far as i know.
@JaxonH
For someone who finds these discussions "utterly pointless" you sure do have a lot to say.
Sorry to say, that some games are objectively better than others. Someone might prefer, say, Shaq Fu to Street Fighter II but only a fool would argue against Street Fighter II being the better game objectively.
Having the humility to put your personal opinions aside and accept that popularity is usually a measure of quality is ultimately a good thing. For example, I have zero interest in Minecraft, but I can fully accept that it must be a fantastic game; otherwise it wouldn't have achieved the record-breaking success it did.
So yes, both your opinion and my opinion only matter a little when it comes to what's game of the year. Sounds like both you and I agree that Elden Ring is a lock for game of the year, so what's the point in arguing?
Thanks for sharing your personal opinions on games, but they honestly add nothing to the discussion at hand. I can put my personal opinions aside when having GotY discussions; sad that you cannot.
The fact is, Elden Ring is a game that will almost certainly be widely remembered and discussed for years to come, like most "game of the year" games. Nintendo just doesn't have any games like that on the Switch this year.
Lastly, you say that touting Elden Ring as the presumptive GotY is "silly console warring"? What an absurd statement! Elden Ring is a multiplatform game that is on literally everything but Switch. Xbox, Playstation and PC players can all play Elden Ring. When the Switch Pro or Switch 2 or whatever comes out, I fully expect Elden Ring to be on it. It wouldn't shock me to see an Elden Ring port to the original Switch in a year to two frankly.
Elden Ring is not an exclusive game and discussing its success and impact has nothing to do with console wars.
This, alongside Kirby's Dream Buffet practically confirms there was a general Direct scheduled for June with tons of announcements like this. Who knows what other games were also there? I'm thirsty for more Zelda info!
Another example of a stunning Nintendo Switch exclusive.
Shame it's not coming out sooner tbh. There's not going to be much to play between now and then except maybe some backlog.
@Judal27 Oh be quiet :/
@bones They announced the physical release today as well
@RushDawg
Ok it's clear to me now this is indeed childish console warring. It has nothing to do with multiplat, everything to do with coming into a Bayonetta article to declare how great Elden Ring is and how Nintendo can't compete.
And no, there is no game objectively better or worse. Just mass agreement. Most would have the opinion Shaq Fu is worse, but that doesn't make it objective, no matter how many agree.
Bottom line is, this article isn't about Elden Ring. Going off topic to lord the game over Nintendo Switch gamers, declaring it "objectively better" is something I expect from 10 year olds on Twitter.
I don't have time for it. I was under the impression you'd be receptive to a civil, reasonable response but, clearly I was wrong.
So I won't waste any more of my time. Good day.
This looks SO good, but man, what a WIERD trailer that focuses almost completely on fantasy escalation. Oh you though ***** was real when it was GODS destroying PLANETS, well, hold on to your ass because now it's mega gods and all of reality at stake!!!
This is like the Disgaea 5 trailer that kept flashing tag lines like "THE NUMBERS HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS HIGH" while showing identical game play to any other Disgaea game ... but this isn't satire ...
Or well, I guess it's ... different satire?
@RushDawg No, I don't think the game of the year should go to Elden Ring, I played it for a few hours and got bored. It's okay, maybe really great if you can stick with it but not really anything all that special as far as I'm concerned. Switch Sports however, I play that game every day since it came out, gotta unlock all the new costumes, emojis, titles, clothes, etc. every week. Still way too fun in online multiplayer, it never gets old. If that was it, and this was December 31st I'd have to give it to Switch Sports.
However, I was in a couple betas and an alpha for MultiVersus, which is set to come out soon, and that's what should be a lock for GOTY. Plus it's free to play, available on all systems but Nintendo, cross-play, and with a ton of characters along with proper voice actors that fans can't get anywhere else. Made by the Mortal Kombat team, the fighting is fantastic, and it's main focus being 2v2 so it's even better than Smash Bros. And with the promise of regularly adding new characters and WBs enormous catalog of franchises, it's sure to be a big hit.
@JaxonH
There's no childish console warring whatsoever on my part. The childish one here is you, who's resorting to ad hominem attacks. You're also ascribing intentions to my post and telling me I'm "console warring" when I'm explicitly telling you the opposite. Very sad that you feel the need to result to personal attacks.
It's also laughable that you're accusing me of being unreasonable and unable to participate in a civil discussion when you open your post by insulting me.
Yes, I did bring Elden Ring into this discussion, but not as some deranged anti-Nintendo campaign, anti-Bayonetta plot. If you'd bothered to read my post history, you'd see that I brought up Elden Ring in response to another poster who claimed that:
"Nintendo stomped the competition this year. It wasn't even close."
That's the original statement I replied to and yet I'm the one you think is a childish console war guy? Get real.
All I did was reasonably point out that Nintendo isn't blowing the competition away as they are unlikely to be in the game of the year discussion this year, as Elden Ring has it on lock. This is a fact that YOU AGREE WITH. And somehow that makes me some anti-Nintendo console war fanboy? Give me a break.
@RushDawg
I told you I'm done, I'm not sure why you're responding to me still
And for the record, Nintendo is absolutely blowing everyone else away. And not just by a little bit. You don't have to agree, but enough ppl feel the same that your opinion on the matter is, frankly, irrelevant. If you're truly not console warring, that shouldn't bother you.
Again, good day.
Awesome! Loving the look of Viola as well. Hopefully you can play through the whole game with her in NG+ and not limited to a few chapters.
This destroys all of Nintendo's ho hum first party titles by a mile. Also proof we don't need a Switch 2, just developers who aren't too lazy to squeeze the power out of it, because man that looks gorgeous.
I miss E3 This was finally announced and I almost didn't even know it because it was a random drop and was already down on the news page by the time I loaded it! No fanfare for anything. It just....exists!
The internet would have exploded if this was June 6.
@JaxonH
You first said you were "done" after insulting me which was rude and uncalled for. I had every right to reply to that.
And if you were indeed "done", why did do you feel the need to try and get the last word in?
And your closing argument is that Nintendo is killing it because lots of people agree and my opinion is irrelevant? After you argued the exact opposite position with Elden Ring? At least I remained consistent with my message, as opposed to doing a complete 180 as you seem to have done.
I don't expect a reply to this of course. After all, you're "done".
@RushDawg
You're baiting me now, refusing to go about your business.
I respect your opinion, but it's not fact. The problem is you're not respecting others opinions. You don't seem me going to the Elden Ring comment section to boast about how much better Switch games are. That's the key difference.
So yes, your opinion is irrelevant. Congrats, you like Elden Ring more. Good for you. Many here don't. So your opinion is irrelevant. It doesn't change how ppl feel. They're not flaunting their opinion over yours in the Elden Ring thread, so why are you coming here flaunting yours?
That said, I'm done. I've been done, but you keep responding. So I'll just block you. Reply all you want, but I won't be able to read it.
Good day.
@iMarkU Yes, that's true. I guess it's possible something could slip into November still. I think it's equally possible Nintendo leave it to Pokemon to clean up - alongside a Lite OLED.
Hrmm announced in September and releasing in November... I mean it's definitely possible. I think we can safely rule out Mario and Zelda this side of 2023, but that Metroid Prime Remaster would work, a port of Star Fox Zero from the Wii U would work, but what about a brand new Donkey Kong game?
Does DK require a longer marketing window? I mean it's not a Mario or Zelda (evident by the fact the last new game was in Feb 2014!) - But early September announce for a mid November release feels possible.
I think a lack of a summer E3 alludes to a big March launch, or in other words, a new model
@JaxonH
I'm surprised to see your reply. You kept telling me you were "done".
I only said I liked Elden Ring more than Kirby. Not sure why this is so upsetting to you. I never said Elden Ring is my personal favourite game this year. My personal feelings about Elden Ring are irrelevant to the point I'm making. I said it's the consensus Game of the Year at the moment, a point which you agreed with. Not sure why you couldn't just leave it at that.
I've also consistently respected the opinions of others in this comment thread. Not once have I told anyone who dislikes Elden Ring that they're wrong.
I'm replying to the comments made in this comment thread, so there's so need for me to seek out some other "Elden Ring" thread. Didn't realize only comments that said "I agree Nintendo is killing it" are allowed by you here.
At the end of the day, someone said Nintendo is blowing the competition away and that it's not close. I responded that this isn't the case, as Nintendo lacks a GotY contender (you can't be "blown away" if you've got the best game of the year). Not sure why you have such a huge problem with this.
@JaxonH My family still owns 2 Switches and I still like to keep up with Nintendo in the hopes they release a Switch Pro etc. I"ve been playing Nintendo since 1988 and have owned every console they ever made. I am still a fan but want better for them.
@Shredderlovespizza
That's cool. Technology keeps marching forward. So one day you'll have your wish. But at the current moment, I don't think it's a matter of "better" so much as "preference" and "chosen direction". Portable systems with a starting price of $199 that are this small and lightweight and have 5+ hours battery life for AAA games, just aren't capable of outputting what you want. But it'll get there eventually. If not the next generation then definitely the one after that.
@PepperMintRex No More Heroes 3 was released on current gen hardware on 27 August 2021 my friend
@RushDawg I saw a friend playing Elden Ring and I genuinely thought he was playing a PS3 game. It’s trying so hard to be Breath Of The Wild but it’s got none of the personality.
I'll be playing the village dlc that day 😎
@JaxonH I agree with you! I love Elden Ring, it's a great game! But... this is a BIG BUT, it has a lot of problems that tend to get swept under the rug due to its popularity (the grinding, the baren open world, the high barrier of entry, the horribly designed late game bosses) that I personally do think will have it not as fondly remembered as it is right now. There are even discussions right now about if the game is overrated in the popular discourse (Elden Ring is not even a year old yet).
As far as Nintendo games that will be remembered from this year going forward... Xenoblade 3, Bayonetta 3, and Splatoon 3 alone will be games played for years to come. That is before we talk about Scarlet and Violet. Nintendo gamers have a lot to be happy about this year. I also think PS4/PS5 and Xbox players also have a lot to be happy about this year. But, I don't think lording Elden Ring as this generation-defining game is one of them. It is not Breath of the Wild or Skyrim which shook the very foundation of the industry when they were released. It is a fun game, I love it, but, it is a game with problems. And if @RushDawg wants to discuss those problems with me I'm more than happy to discuss them. But, this is a Bayonetta 3 article and not the place or time for this discussion.
@Gamer83 Sony and Xbox is weak in 2022, 2023 will be a Xbox showcase.
I bought Switch for this, but Platinum had some duds so reviews will tell me if its worth full price on day 1 or not. Platinum failed hard with Babylons Fall in 2022.
@Wexter
Thanks for the offer, but I’m not interested in having a discussion on Elden Ring’s flaws. I think you’ve misunderstood me as this giant Elden Ring booster who thinks it’s the best thing ever. I’ve never said anything of the sort.
All I did was respond to someone who said that Nintendo was destroying the competition and it wasn’t even close. I strongly disagreed with that statement, as Nintendo doesn’t have Elden Ring, which is the likely game of the year.
I am not saying Elden Ring is the best thing ever or even my favourite game this year. I am just saying it is likely the game of the year and it alone means Nintendo isn’t blowing the competition away without it being close. Note that I never said Nintendo didn’t have the best lineup for 2022 even.
Some of my comments were misunderstood and certain things were ascribed to me (like “console warring”, after I denounced console wars previously in this thread, lol). Things got a bit out of hand and some insults were thrown my way too. At the end of the day that’s all I was trying to say.
I appreciate your comment though!
Regarding Elden Ring being a generation defining game like Skyrim and Breath of the Wild (and Dark Souls too) I disagree with you there. I do think Elden Ring will have that sort of impact. Again, not saying it’s my favourite, just calling it like I see it.
For what it’s worth, I don’t like Skyrim all that much, but I totally acknowledge and respect its impact on the industry. I try to be as objective as possible when it comes to this sort of thing.
Time will tell which one of us is correct I suppose.
@RushDawg Does it matter which console has the Game of the Year game on it? It is about the quality and quantity of Nintendo's first/second-party releases that are killing it this year (far better than Sony and Microsoft's first-party output this year). I mean, can you really blame Jason for saying Nintendo is killing it in that department when in the back half of the year we have a new Xenoblade (which early buzz is it too is a game of the year candidate), Splatoon 3 looks like a massive step-up from Splatoon 2 which has been an eSports darling, and Bayonetta 3 which will probably be DMC5 level good as Bayonetta 2 was the best spectacle fighter of the last generation. That and Nintendo already had Legends Arceus, hailed as the best Pokemon game in decades, and Scarlet and Violet look spectacular... so at least two amazing Pokemon entries in the same year.
That and, maybe I'm wrong, but when I read your first comment I came to the same conclusion as Jason. I think you need to re-read your comments and get back to me. As if I came to the same conclusion means your point was not properly explained and comes off as console waring.
That and there has been a number of GotY winners that have been soured on after the fact. MGSV gets barely talked about nowadays and was an incomplete mess in a lot of spots. This is why I brought up the issues with Elden Ring as those will be discussed after the hype train dies down (which will probably not be the case for a game like Bayonetta 3 or even Xenoblade 3).
@Ventilator
I have a Series X so I hope so but I'm thinking it'll be more like 2024 before MS gets its act together.
This looks like a Bayonetta game
@Wexter
Nintendo lacks a GOTY contender so they’re not blowing away the competition to the point where it’s not even close. That’s it, that’s my point.
If you misunderstood my earlier posts, maybe I worded it poorly or maybe you just didn’t get it. Either way, respectfully, I have no interest in going back and reviewing my old posts; I’m looking to move forward.
Yes, precious GOTY winners have had their reputations diminish over the years. I don’t think Elden Ring will be one of them. I think Elden Ring will be looked upon as an all-time great years from now. I could be wrong, we’ll just have to wait and see.
You can list as many Nintendo exclusive games as you like. It doesn’t change my point that Nintendo’s not blowing their competition away to the point where it isn’t even close when they’re not in the GOTY conversation. And no, I don’t consider Splatoon 3 or Xenoblade 3 to be likely GOTY contenders.
As an aside, what makes you think Splatoon 3 looks way better than Splatoon 2? I’ve put hundreds of hours into Splatoon 1 & 2 and Splatoon 3 just looks like “more Splatoon” to me. I’m definitely going to get it and play it for 300+ hours, but I haven’t seen anything yet that screams massive upgrade over Splatoon 2. Curious to hear your rationale.
It’s like no group can get things right. Angels messing stuff up in the first, demons in the second, and humans in the third but considering where both groups come from…and even the God that oversaw them and the source of free will… well maybe not that surprising after all. The lore of Bayonetta has always had interesting hooks. Granted the lore maintains a ton of unreliable narrators so it both fits and is a crock pot at the same time. Lol.
@Gamer83 We will see. Starfield and Forza 8, confirmed so far.
My Series X "Pro console" is RTX 3070 / 32.GB / 4.TB SSD / AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.
Reprint of Bayo 1 now pls
@Darknilious Stop calling Metroid Prime 4 "Metroid 4"! Geez...
@RushDawg Bayonetta 2 on Wii U is the only GOTY contender i remember and it isn't even made by Nintendo.
@michellelynn0976 Elden Ring is phenomenal tho
@Ventilator
Don't care for Starfield (not really into Bethesda's games outside of DOOM) but Forza 8 is definitely one I'm keeping close tabs on. I love Forza 1-4 and 6, 5 and 7 disappointed but I think 8 will be a return to form.
@Gamer83 I care most about Forza too. In fact they are spending over 5 years on F8, and should be superior to F7.
F5, 6 and 7 were not as good as the others as you say. Forza Horion kept the brand relevant during those 3 anyway.
@Fazermint
A physical Bayo 1 was confirmed yesterday!
@RushDawg don't bother with @JaxonH. He's a true Nintendo "fan" and we all know fan is short for fanatic. Just look at how many lengthy responses he has on this page alone. He doesn't understand that discussions are for people offering different opinions. After all, one of his earliest posts was the traitorous critic / if you don't like it leave fallacy. He thinks these pages should be an echo chamber of Nintendo love and anyone that points out a flaw should just go somewhere else. He's not looking for discussion, he's engaging in confirmation bias. Anything that agrees with his point of view he accepts, anything that doesn't, he disregards.
How can you possibly debate someone that says there is no objective standards for evaluating a videogame? It's all subjective? That's utter nonsense. A broken game that only properly responds to player input some of the time would objectively be a bad game.
He did slam you for arguing that popularity of a thing made them more valuable and I would agree with him there. The popularity fallacy is one that a lot of people bring up and it's wrong. People used to think the world was flat and gods caused storms, but that didn't make those ideas correct. A lot of people played (and enjoyed) Elden Ring, but that doesn't make it game of the year. It's GOTY material Regardless of its popularity.
Finally, I think it's absolutely absurd he accuses you of console warring and throwing your opinion around and then says that Nintendo is blowing the competition away. It's a tragic lack of self-awarness.
@RushDawg ohhh, shi! Thanks for letting me know! Time to replace the Wii U set
@Ambassador_Kong You like making these comments and giving nothing back in return, where does that leave you? I've seen you do it numerous times over the years. Big bold statements then run away for months. It's like shouting abuse at someone from a moving car. Try addressing the person directly rather than talking around him.
@RushDawg I think you want to argue and I'm not down for that. Firstly, there are definite problems with Elden Ring, from the terrible late-game boss designs to the high barrier of entry with Margit, and the amount of grinding needed in places (good luck getting some loot). Elden Ring has problems... like major problems. I love the game, but it is not as good as Bloodborne or even the original Dark Souls. The hype will die down and people will sour on it... and they already are. The game has been heavily criticized for its replayability due to bad dungeon design and repeating bosses. When people resort to "how can I grind runes fast enough so I can skip the drag of the bland one-off dungeons and min-max how many I need to visit to get to the fun parts" that is bad game design.
As for GotY contenders you're commenting on an article with one Bayonetta 3. Bayonetta 2 was a GotY contender the year of release and Bayonetta 3 seems to be cranking that to 11. That and all the early press for Xenoblade 3 seems to also be stating it is a GotY contender.
As stated in a previous comment though GotY means nothing. What do we define as that year's GotY? What won at the Game Awards? That is a low bar. They tend to be Western Studio focused unless the game is a generation-defining title like Breath of the Wild. Dragon Age Inquisition beat Bayonetta 2 in 2014. I love me some Dragon Age Inquisition, but that game did not deserve to be a GotY. And you won't find a bigger Dragon Age fanboy on this site and I say DAI was not GotY worthy. Or are we talking about Last of Us Part 2 a game so divisive the even utterance of it will probably get people upset? It somehow beat out Doom Eternal, Animal Crossing and Ghost of Tsushima games far more beloved by their audiences and in Animal Crossing NH's case took the planet by storm. So, my point stands the year's GotY means jack.
You seem to look at gaming exceptionally shallowly. Firstly Namco Bandai and Fromsoft are behind Elden Ring, not Sony or Microsoft. So, yes from a development standpoint Nintendo is killing it. You can deny it all you want, but they are. They don't need to win GotY for them to have a killer year that is blowing past the competition when they own the sales chart. That and from a 2022 release standpoint I don't think Nintendo has had as strong an outing in years with each month having a very good to excellent title on lock.
@Pho I am glad you liked it. I don't know, I just couldn't get into it.
@RushDawg Wrong. Animal Crossing? Seriously? Eldin Ring isn't anything special. It's Dark Souls with an open-ended world. Capcom and Nintendo both have made much better games in the past few years.
@Wexter Exactly.
@Wexter
I actually don’t want to argue. For someone who’s “not down for” arguing, you sure said a lot to argue against my position.
I’ve stated my point clearly and concisely across multiple posts. You obviously disagree and that’s ok. If you truly don’t want to argue, I’d suggest we leave it at that.
I’m also disappointed you didn’t answer my Splatoon 3 question.
Exciting news for the fans I'm sure! I haven't played the series yet but plan to, just waiting for a decent sale on the 1st two games.
@JaxonH Splatoon 3 is a hard call, if you aren't there day 1 it's gonna be tough later. Well maybe not too hard for you, but you know what I mean. XC3 won't be finished until holiday 2023 so that's an easy 1 for the back burner, though I know you need to get the CE now while you can. I think I'm going to play Bayonetta 1 & 2 again before 3. Currently I'm only playing Fortnite, yes really stop snickering, and I'm watching my kid play FFX - HD about 2-3 hours a night, it holds up.
@rjejr
I hopped into Splatoon 2 a couple months ago, since I'd accidentally lost my save file when migrating to the OLED and wanted to start a new save, and ended up sinking over 100 hrs in a hard-core binge. Only thing to watch out for is Splatfests.
FFX definitely holds up. I replayed it when the Switch version dropped. I love that game. The perfect turn based JRPG. Remember playing on Vita. It was my first ever JRPG- I'd bounced off it at release having not understood the appeal of the genre, but after Fire Emblem Awakening converted me on turn based, gave it another shot and loved every minute. Being new to the genre though, that Yunalesca fight felt insanely hard. In a way that felt insanely satisfying to overcome. When I replayed, after years of JRPGs, it wasn't anywhere close to as hard as I remembered it being. Best skill tree of any RPG btw
I get the appeal of Fortnite, it's just not my thing. Kinda surprised it's yours, though.
@RushDawg Why are you so obsessed with GotY? That seems to be all you're focusing on, and it is annoying and argumentative. You're completely ignoring my point that the early press of Xenoblade 3 is that it is a GotY contender. That and Bayonetta 2 was one of the best games last gen (definitively based on reviews, popularity, awards and lasting appeal) and Bayonetta 3 looks to be even better. You're ignoring my point that Nintendo has GotY contenders for this narrative that they don't. What is a GotY? Stop arguing nothing and actually explain your stance in a way that is not a waste of my time and others.
You're ignoring what I and Jaxon are saying just to argue about nothing! GotY does not mean anything! You've not even defined what is a GotY game? Is it what wins at the Game Awards (which is western focused so Bayonetta 3 and Xenoblade 3 will get ignored anyways the same way Nier Automata did) or are you defining GotY by your own metric? Your points make no sense and are very narrow.
@Wexter
I'm not obsessed with "game of the year", as I've actively tried to move away from this discussion. Those are not the actions of a person who is obsessed.
You have twice now accused me of being argumentative, while continue to argue with me in your replies. If you want to argue, that's fine, but stop projecting being argumentative onto me.
With that said, as per my previous post, I'm not interested in arguing. This is a comment thread on a news article that's two days old now; it's time for me to move on.
I am however genuinely interested in your reasoning as to why Splatoon 3 looks to be way better than Splatoon 2. Please feel free to share if you'd like.
I’m gonna laugh if Viola is in some way related to either Bayonetta or Jeanne.
@JaxonH That 3 part Yunaleasca fight was definitely hard. My kid just barely manage to beat it first try but I really thought he was going to lose right near the end. Took about 6 tries for the main Sin boss battle, 3 last night and 3 tonight, getting obliterated by Seymour and the 4 spinning phantasms at the moment.
I can't imagine being competitively into Splatoon again, though I would like to give the single player in 3 a go at some point.
Fortnite I play an hour a day, it's meaningless fun.
Just gave up on Seymour, next time.
@rjejr
Always welcome to come join us in Sunbreak. Me and Ralizah and Ulysses just had a ton of great hunts today. Got a Lunagaron Mantle, then a Zinogre Skymerald, then a Bazelgeuse Mantle... been on a roll lately. I love that your palico can pilfer materials now if you use a Gathering type. Half my mantles have been from them pilfering. And I'm convinced they have a hidden feature where feeding the baby owlet before a quest slightly increases you drop rates. Cause as soon as I stopped, I hit a dry spell. Started feeding him again, bam. More mantles.
@JaxonH Thanks for the offer but no Sunbreak for me. Splatoon 3 feels like something I should do if my wife lets me. I kinda miss it. If only it had split screen I could use my kid as an excuse.
@rjejr
Surprised you guys don't all have your own Switch at this point. Local wireless is definitely a thing. Can't tell you how many times me and my brother played Splatoon 2 in local wireless.
@JaxonH We had the 1 for like 5 years now, since Mario Odyssey released. Is that the last new Mario game 3D or 2D? Well better than 8 years for the last new Mario Kart. Got the other 1 for my kid when they went away to college, can't believe that was 2 years ago now, they're home more than they're away. So my kid and I can share the 1. Not like either of us play it much anymore anyway, they move on to Steam and PC, I've ben playing on PS5. No regrets or anything like that but we certainly don't need another one.
The problem w/ local wireless is that you need 2 copies of a $60 game by default. Which is probably why games have local wireless and not split screen on my 75" tv, to sell more copies of the game. 🤑
@Darknilious Metroid 4 came out in 2002
