The creator of Undertale and Deltarune, Toby Fox, has frequently shown off his plethora of skills during his time in the industry — from writing to game design, and even composing music! And it's that last one that's brought him particular attention from Game Freak and The Pokémon Company.
Toby Fox has confirmed on Twitter today that he's responsible for some of the music that we could hear in today's Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer! Namely, Toby Fox has composed the 'field music' of the game, which he says Game Freak has rearranged multiple times throughout the game. Sounds like it's one of the big leitmotifs of Scarlet and Violet, then!
But that's not all; Toby Fox has also confirmed that he's contributing more than a single track to the game, with a cheeky little reference to his contribution to Sword and Shield's own soundtrack.
For those who don't remember, this isn't the first time Toby Fox has worked with Game Freak. Previously, he was the primary composer for the RPG Little Town Hero. But he also composed a single track for the Generation 8 Pokémon games — namely, the Battle Tower theme, which many players might not have heard if they didn't track down this challenge during the post-game!
Here's a snippet of the absolute bop that Toby Fox composed for Sword and Shield:
At least in Scarlet and Violet, Toby Fox's music will be an integral part of the main game. And it's sounding good to us from what we can make out in the trailer! Give it another watch and let us know if you can spot any Toby Fox stylings in the music.
How much more Generation 9 music can we take today? We already know what the new legendaries will look like, your new professors, a handful of new 'mons, and some potential past and future themes. Phew! That's just scratching the surface.
Are you excited to hear Toby Fox's work in Scarlet and Violet? Let us know in the comments!

Toby's living the dream.
Adored Undertale's OST and same goes for Deltarune.
His music Megalovania also appeared on Dance Dance Revolution A3.
Very intriguing! Basically a lietmotif, eh? I'll be looking out for it when I'm playing!
Toby is truly a creative genius. Deltarune Chapter 1 and 2 have some of the best video game music ever made. I would seriously put it up there with Super Mario Galaxy and most Sonic games. I’m so glad he’s back for Scarlet and Violet.
@PBandSmelly “It’s Tobin’ Time.”
@Goat_FromBOTW I hate you for how much I like this!
Let’s gooo!, the guy behind some of my favorite music tracks, and no not just megelovania.
Pokémon in my opinion, always had amazing music, and it’s only going too get better!
@SimonCucho Ngl, I loved Undertale and its music, but I did not like the Battle Tower music from SwSh at all and felt it didn't suit Pokemon whatsoever. At least this time it seems he composed the theme, which has then been arranged by Game Freak. I thought the music in the trailer was fairly decent.
Edit: @Flint That's a great way of putting it.
I thought the music fit battle tower really well, I mean it as an optional track, so not really apart form the list of other tracks, and it was literally the battle tower, so it sounded like battle music, Toby battle music.
Idk I thought it fit in my opinion.
Toby Fox is in gen 9, but i need to know if the music is orchestred.
@Giancarlothomaz Orchestrated music would be amazing. That’s an easy way to make this Gen feel more impactful while still having Gamecube graphics.
I personally think Undertale is incredibly overrated, but I can't help but feel super happy for the guy. I bet he never imagined this for himself 10 years ago--his game becoming a massive success, getting Sans and Megalovania into Smash, meeting Sakurai in person and playing games with him, composing music for multiple Pokémon games...it's pretty insane. We should all let that be an inspiration to us of what a single individual can achieve if they set their mind to it.
@Not_Soos Undertale is kinda overrated NGL. I prefer Earthbound and Mother 3. Deltarune however, is way better in my opinion. Easily up there with those games.
@Goat_FromBOTW Deltarune was the game Toby wanted to make from the very beginning, and I have to agree, it’s just undertake, but waaay better.
Not a fan of his music (or his games) myself but I still will get the games.
Oh sweet! I always enjoy Toby Fox’s catchy melodies so it’s good to hear that one of his recurring leitmotifs, what Toby does best in my opinion, is in the game.
Good for him. He does a great job. Doubt I will hear this though
@Goat_FromBOTW Do you SERIOUSLY look at this trailer and see "gamecube graphics"?! Get your eyes checked. You desperately need glasses.
@Bret You’re right, GameCube is an exaggeration. It’s more like very early Xbox 360.
@Goat_FromBOTW 🤣 Lmao. This comment made me laugh harder then I should of Lol.
No wonder the music didn't stand out to me.
