If anyone has ever told you Sonic is dead, it couldn't be further from the truth. Sega Sammy has posted its latest unit sales data for fiscal year 2021 and it appears the company's longtime mascot is right out in front.
Yes, even after 30 years the blue blur is still leading the charge for the Japanese developer and publisher - with his "full game unit sales" over the past fiscal year peaking in the fourth quarter by surpassing the four million mark. This puts him ahead of the juggernaut Sega franchises Total War and Football Manager.
The Persona series (by Sega subsidiary Atlus) placed fourth on the list with three million sales, and below this were "other" games such as Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Two Point Hospital.
Perhaps most interestingly in the Sonic section is the mention of Sonic Generations. While nothing but the name was referenced, it seems the 2011 release might still be doing better than the much newer 3D entry, Sonic Forces. Team Sonic Racing, Sonic Mania and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 have also played a part in Sonic's ongoing success.
All of this follows on from last year's Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which will be followed by a sequel in 2022. So, there you have it - Sonic is alive and well, despite some people on the internet always telling us he's finished. Have you purchased a Sonic game over the past year? What about any other Sega titles? Leave a comment down below.

Sonic is still Sega's Mario. Where would they be today without him.
I picked up Generations again recently from Steam for something like £1 in a sale so maybe all those units sold didn't actually bring in that much.
Hoping for something more interesting than just the Sonic Colours remake at E3
The other year Sony told us The Last of Us is not dead yet, then the other month Nintendo told us F-Zero is not dead yet, then the other day Google told us Stadia was not dead yet, and now Sega told us Sonic is not dead yet. I had a feeling that these four are up to something.
Every time I hear "Sega Sammy", I think about Sammy Classic Sonic Fan. Help.
@VoidofLight You're not alone
Ok, the fact that a dull as heck concept of a game like Football Manager sold more than Persona really ticks me off.
So much untapped potential in Sega.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi
The Last of Us and Sonic are most definitely not dead.
Sega would steadfastly deny it, but their body of work since leaving console making would indicate that most of their beloved IPs not named Sonic are indeed dead. Even the few that have enjoyed sequels or remasters lately (examples: Streets of Rage 4, Panzer Dragoon Remake, Shenmue 3) were either outsourced to other developers or required a Kickstarter to exist.
Sonic may still sell, but because it's come at the direct expense of all the other IPs I care about (especially Sega's amazing RPG franchises like Shining Force, Skies of Arcadia, and Dragon Force, but also their laundry list of iconic coin-op Arcade games), I personally couldn't care less about it anymore.
I hope this makes Sega want to pursue the idea of releasing Sonichu on Nintendo Switch
Sonic Forces outsold Sonic Mania overall though.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Sonic the Hedgehog F-Zero Racing with zombies, coming soon to Google Stadia!
Has Sega been quiet lately or did I just miss an announcement of an announcement from them in the last while, 😂
@Entrr_username Seriously? I love Persona, but Football Manager is so compelling that it ruins marriages and careers. That’s obviously not a good thing, but it speaks to how immersive a simulation it is. Of course, you do have to like football first to actually enjoy it.
@AtlanteanMan Couldn't have said it better myself. Is it any wonder why the Sega racing games were called Sonic and Sega and not just Sega? And then dropping the Sega part altogether for Team Sonic Racing?
@Krull I really don't see how managing and watching AI play soccer is that interesting.
They could add another few million sales to that if they ported over Persona 4 to the Switch.
Persona could do so much better if it was really multiplatform at this point.
What? You mean all those angry people haunting comments sections and YouTube saying sonic is dead... don’t know what they are talking about?
Who’d have thought it?
Hold on... of the 20 games they published, only 4 were Sega in-house (not a subsidiary like Atlus or Creative, or indie like Two Point or Headcanon) and 1 of those is 10 years old?
I know 2020 was rubbish for development, but other than Yakuza and Sonic spin-offs, did Sega do anything themselves last year?
@Entrr_username That is absolutely fair enough. Like I said, you actually have to like football. If you do, it’s basically a football RPG. You gather party members, have battles (matches), win gold, and buy and develop better party members based on their stats.
Regarding Sonic Generations, I'd imagine a key part of that game still getting sales is the fact it's backwards compatible on XB1 and Series X|S. You don't need a PC or a 15 year old console to experience it.
@Entrr_username you could say that about almost any Simulation game, no? Cities: Skylines, Planet Coaster, Two Point Hospital, etc..
Wait a sec, why is Generations listed and not forces, or lost world there? I mean yeah the quality of those games has been spoken for. I get boom not being there because outsourced oversees. Generations was a decade ago and you include other spin offs like Team Sonic Racing and Tokyo 2020.
Sonic Mania Plus is my favorite Sonic game. I am happy to see the blue blur doing well. I hope Sega releases a new Sonic hame when they are ready.
I'm one of the people who bought Generations just last year. You're welcome Sega.
I'll keep saying it until it happens... Please Sega, wise up and finally make Sonic Adventure 3 soon!
More Knuckles & Rouge levels + that bomb jazzy rap soundtrack- "GIVE UP THE EMERALDS OR DIE, I DON'T LOVE YOU!"
... Wun can only hope.
Sonic Generations was a Game With Gold in March last year. Assuming MS paid Sega for it, perhaps payment was not made until the 2021 fiscal year?
I know I bought a fair few BC sonic games on Xbox last year 😅, Sonic Adventure 1&2, Sonic 4 Eps 1&2, hell I even bought Sonic Fighters on PS3 the year before that!
@Inc I actually recently payed full price ($20?) for sonic generations on 360 so I could play it on my series s.
@ralphdibny yeah I bought most of the BC sonic games on 360. Didn't get sonic fighters or the original sonic adventure, but I have the rest of those.
