At Microsoft Ignite 2021, Niantic announced it would be collaborating with Microsoft and showed off a proof-of-concept Pokémon GO demo on a HoloLens 2 headset.
Niantic founder and CEO, John Hanke, appeared in a video illustrating how AR can enrich daily routines. Keep in mind, this demo is not intended for consumer use and is only used to offer an "early" glimpse into future evolutions of both software and hardware.
"For our part, we’re committed to leveraging and expanding our platform to build real-world AR experiences for as many devices as possible and reaching a diverse set of players no matter their physical location. This includes building with others that share a common vision for how technology can facilitate deeper social connection and spark a sense of adventure in the real world."
"We’ve only scratched the surface. We know the years ahead to be filled with important achievements which will serve as waypoints in AR’s journey to become a life-changing computing platform. We’re thrilled to be leading the way."
So, what do you think? Are you looking forward to future AR experiences from Niantic? Leave a comment down below.

One step closer to Skynet! 🤣
Even though AR is Niantic's main project, it can't be considered their main export. Right now, it's their games that only draw you in with the allure of AR, but players remain attached for different reasons like the social aspect of participating in the various types of battles or simply going to real world locations.
@Dm9982 oh plz no
Am I the only one who thought, "Oh the UI looks oddly similar to the UI design in the anime version of Sword Art Online?"
Does this mean Microsoft is strengthening their relationship with Nintendo?
The possibilities of AR really do excite me, way more than VR. Turning Pokemon Go into a more seamless real-life experience could one day be brilliant, they should pair it with the Pokeball Plus controller so that you can feel like you're throwing an actual pokeball when you catch a pokemon or throw one into battle.
@Nermannn Pokemon Go could be quite the partnership product when all is said and done, between Nintendo, Google, Game Freak, and yeah depending how far along this gets, Microsoft as well. I'd say Sony should get their hands in there, but I'm not sure what more they could contribute to the experience that everyone involved can't already offer.
This is becoming the corporate equivalent of Smash Bros. Everyone is here! I really hope they can all realise this game's potential.
The last thing I would think off is using it for Pokemon
Come on Sony please drop that VR gimmick and join the AR party!
Could those people look any less awkward?
Could those Pokémon look any less like they're actually there?
#remindmein10years
Maybe one that AR and VR glasses could be the size of regular sunglasses. Until then Im not that interested in wearing them outside...
The HoloLens Yu-Gi-Oh is what I really want!
Those guys are really into it!

@gcunit As someone who works at a company developing AR software, specifically for the Holo-Lens 2, the only reason it looks a bit off is because of the way they are compositing the AR images and the video of the people using the experience. Even the best versions of this (which are really hard to pull off) alwasy look a bit wrong. Using HL2 though, the experience is way better, and it really does feel like creatures and objects are sharing the space with you, when done well of course.
@coexist42 I'll bear that in mind, thanks. Bit of a marketing hurdle by the sounds of it. Proof will be in the eating.
Call me crazy, but after decades of walking around outside with a standard pair of glasses strapped to my face, there isn't a judge in the land that could get me to wear that bulky chunk of insanity, outdoors.
Imagine a VR Pokémon game where you’re actually standing in a stadium, crowds cheering, standing behind your Pokémon and battling in real time... man...
Of course it's still an early concept and the composing looks off (which doesn't matter, when it's in your face you'll take it as real, Vox has a great video on VR talking about that aspect of humans), but yeah as long as the lenses are this big, there's no way anyone is going out with anything like that. Remember how people reacted to Google Glass? It LOOKS invasive to others, it's insane.
Hey look @ThanosReXXX Hololens is back. Feels like a decade ago we were talking about this stuff, though it was probably more like 5 years. Stupid never-ending pandemic 😝
Sounds cool, but I'd really rather hear about it in 10 or 20 years when the retail version is much closer to coming out. Getting hyped this early is a waste of enthusiasm, by the time it comes out, I'll have lost all interest. Kind of like the new Half Life and Duke Nukem Forever, they sounded incredible in those first couple years but after a decade of waiting, I don't have the desire to pick them up like I once did.
This is a joke right? Pokemon Go is a buggy unstable mess and they'd never fixed it. They simply milked money out of the game and its captive audience, like Farmville. The AR is a gimmick at best. They are so far from making any real breakthroughs in using technology effectively it's absurd.
@rjejr Amen to that. And yes, it does seem like ages ago, or actually not, because at our age, I find that time goes by WAY too fast, even in such annoying times as these...
As for the article: I saw the headline earlier, but I actually didn't want to enter the thread, because by now, I've just about had my fill of Pokémon "fans" and their acidic negativity, so just as a precaution,
I decided to stay away.
So, thank you so very f-ing much for dragging me in here, my friend...
@gcunit To add to what has already been pointed out by the other user, you might want to take a look at the E3 2015 HoloLens presentation with Minecraft, which actually already looked more impressive than this Pokémon Go presentation. Here you go:
And here's another presentation from 2 years ago, from the second version of HoloLens:
As you can see, if done right, it can be pretty impressive. On a side note I do have to mention, in all honesty, that the quality of the Twitter video really wasn't on par with these videos here, so that certainly also didn't work in its favor...
@ThanosReXXX "Pokémon "fans" and their acidic negativity
At this point on NL, I'm pretty sure anybody sees your avatar and the negativity just starts flying regardless of the headline. People just can't let that whole snap thing go. 😉
@rjejr Oh, if only that gauntlet was real. The things I'd do...
All to the actual benefit of the universe, obviously.
Oh, well. Let's just watch those videos I posted above and enjoy and marvel at the HoloLens tech, in hopes of it ever actually appearing, unlike Google Glass...
@ThanosReXXX Obviously. 😉
Hololens will probably happen someday. Not too sure about Magic Leap. Wouldn't be surprised if they shut down entirely and blamed the pandemic. Everybody else does. 😝
@rjejr I do believe that Magic Leap has already faded into the vaporware wasteland, if I'm not mistaken...
EDIT:
That demo with the life-sized whale splashing around in front of the audience in the school gym was pretty cool, though...
And the miniature elephant in the palm of someone's hand was just too cute:
@ThanosReXXX I think Magic Leap is busy working on Pikmin 4 w/ Miyamoto. It's been 6 years, gotta be close to done now. I can see Pikmin fighting a whale in a gymnasium in AR.
@rjejr Added an edit to my previous comment, and I've found some interesting and "relevant to the topic" videos for you:
Back when things were still hunky-dory at Magic Leap HQ...
@rjejr By the way: we're not the only ones wondering what the heck happened to Magic Leap:
@ThanosReXXX Maybe Magic Leap got bought by Elizabeth Holmes? 😂
Sorry, for some reason Theranos keeps popping up lately, new movie or trial or scam or something.
https://www.businessinsider.com/theranos-founder-ceo-elizabeth-holmes-life-story-bio-2018-4
@rjejr For a minute there, I was almost considering changing my name to "Theranos-saurusReXXX". Almost...
Ugh, so creepy. Please stop the consumerism, I want to get off.
What a terrible interface design.
@ThanosReXXX Ceasar Thanos Theranos 😉
@rjejr Hail me...
Cool statuette, actually. Probably costs WAY more than I'd ever spend on these things. In fact, I've never even bought a statuette before...
@ThanosReXXX I have 1 statue. Coincidentally, also of the "hail Caesar" variety.
@rjejr Ah, that's also pretty cool. Original series, huh? Used to be a big fan of mr. Heston, and I do still like his movies, but his pro-gun stance has left a bad taste in my mouth...
@ThanosReXXX "but his pro-gun stance has left a bad taste in my mouth..."
Yeah, a lot of people feel that way over here too, he's the NRA guy. But I like his movies. Back in the 90's when I was writing poetry I called myself "Green Planet Man" after his 3 movies "Soylent Green", "Omega Man" and "PoTA", b/c they kind of work as a trilogy for the fall of humankind. Then I stopped doing drugs.
I think that DVD collection may contain the first new PoTA movie w/ Marky Mark, the one we've all agreed to forget, it's after the old movies, before the new trilogy, just forgotten. But what's cool is it has the live action TV series and the cartoon. Once NY legalizes mj I'll rewatch them all.
@rjejr All great movies, for sure. Some scenes in all these classic movies are legendary. As for the later installment of Planet of the Apes: I actually didn't think it was that bad, regardless of Mark Wahlberg.
I liked that they used the same methods as in the old movies, instead of all the somewhat uncanny CGI in the latest trilogy. And I really regretted that the movie bombed so hard that they never bothered to make a sequel because I really liked the ending. Really, REALLY liked the ending. It could have been a great start for a sequel.
Also, on a personal level, because of losing my mother to Alzheimer's, the premise of the newer movies hit a bit too close to home for me. My father still hasn't even watched the trilogy because of it.
@ThanosReXXX Sorry about your mom. I kinda get the feeling. It was very hard for me to want to watch or play anything involving bad stuff happening to kids after having some of my own. Probably doens't help that I'm such a pessimist.
The PoTA remake was really good the first half - I saw it in theater w/ friends and I was really getting into it - then it just kind of goes off the rails w/ the whole spaceship thing and the fight scene. Kind of felt like they played that ending more for laughs or shock value than plans for a sequel, though I could be wrong about that. I haven't rewatched it since then, I'd probably like it more now after disliking it so much the first time. But I don't want to, rather rewatch the 1st one for the 100th time, it's my favorite movie of all time. I rewatched the 1st 2 in the new trilogy before the 3rd, I'm good there too.
Rewatch should be a word, if just for all the people hooked on The Office.
@rjejr Haha, auto-correct giving you troubles?
As for my mother, it's been 5 years now, so I'm okay with it by now, to some extent. I obviously still miss her, but her life was horrible, so I've made my peace with it.
Voluntarily watching anything to do with or referring to Alzheimers is another story, though...
@ThanosReXXX Even as Caesar on a throne Thanos couldn't pull off this move to delay going to jail. 😉
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/12/elizabeth-holmes-trial-delayed-because-shes-pregant.html
@rjejr Meh, I'd just send my
blue what's her name robotdaughter Nebula to destroy them all. That oughta delay them more than enough...@ThanosReXXX Thanos, you are accused of mass genocide, how do you plead.
"Daughter, kill them all."
@rjejr Yeah... you know, the whole intergalactic finger snapping thing can only entertain one for so long, so a bit of variety every now and then brings life... erm, well... you get the point.
@ThanosReXXX Speaking of entertained, just blew a grand of my wife's money on a tv, b/c midlife crisis, or something. Took me 3 years to wear her down, hope it was worth it, our current tv is still pretty good. That's going in my sons room. He can brag to his college friends he has a 52" tv in his bedroom. I'm not moving it to campus though, don't think I can fit it in the car.
So, you've been there most of your life now, is your brain bilingual in measuring, or have you embraced the metric system and left our weirdness behind? I can do liters to quarts and km to miles but the temps lose me after 0 is 32.
Also, do you tell time in military 24 hour clock? Sammy on PS does, which wouldn't bother me, but he adds the AM and PM, and 17:30PM just isn't a thing. I learned military - that's what I call it - being a security guard from 15-2300 for a year. I think the rent a cop company I worked for - Ogden Security - liked to think we were something we weren't.
@rjejr A grand? Well, that's an amount that I currently definitely can't afford to miss, much less spend on luxury equipment or apparel...
As for your question: I still think in English, mostly. Even when I'm musing out loud (which I obviously only do when I'm at home by myself: wouldn't want people to think I'm cray-cray... ), it's usually in English. It's both natural and kept, because I also read a lot of English books and magazines, and luckily, the Dutch TV culture is one of subs rather than dubs, so all foreign programs are in their own language, and 9 out of 10 foreign shows are either British or American.
As for measurements and time formatting: yup, fully embraced the metric system, and the 24 hour clock notation, as well as degrees Celsius. I was simply too young when I got here to hold on to the American system. It also doesn't make sense to me, and sometimes even confuses me: I mean who the hell uses stones and pounds (written as lbs, to make it even more confusing) for weights, and feet and inches for lengths? I like and/or prefer exact numbers, and one inch is 3,4 - 3,5cm (edit: or even less, if I remember correctly, depending on it being UK or US inches), which makes no sense whatsoever, and also makes it harder to calculate/convert into other measurements.
With cms it's just SO easy: 10cm is a decimeter, 100cm is a meter, 100.000cms is a kilometer and so on. Easy as pi...
P.S.
Who the heck is Sammy on PS? I know PS is the Sony-related sister site, so please don't tag me in there, but if Sammy is a Sony-only member, then that obviously wouldn't ring any bells.
@ThanosReXXX
Sammy is the guy who runs PS - created it before NL took it over - and the grand was the amount my parents gave us a Christmas gift.
Gotta run, but if I didn't reply now Id' forget by tomorrow.
@ThanosReXXX Congratulations, you live in 1 of the top 5 happiest countries on Earth. US moved up from 18 to 14. 😝
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/finland-happiest-country-world-happiness-report-fourth-year-coronavirus-pandemic/
@rjejr We barely made it, I see. Oh, well still more than decent enough, I suppose.
@ThanosReXXX I'm thinking if the mad titan still lived in the US they would have been 2 or 3. 😉
@rjejr And what is THAT supposed to mean?
(now where's mah damn infinity gauntlet?)
@ThanosReXXX It means - I thought you would be insulted it I didn't take a jab at the obvious low hanging fruit joke. 😉
@rjejr Well, as long as you're making fun of actually "still living in the States" Americans, I suppose I'm kinda alright with it. (safely puts away gauntlet for later use... )
@ThanosReXXX Good to see ya. I got vaxxed yesterday. It's like being snapped. Or maybe unsnapped. De-snapped?
Getting ready to leave for a 2 day mini-vacay tomorrow. Supposed to be sunny beach but I'm getting clouds and rain. Can your gauntlet control the weather? 😥
@rjejr I won't get my shot until May/June. I'm not in any kind of so-called risk factor group, so I'll just have to wait for my turn.
I'd say it would more be like you being the snapper, instead of being snapped/unsnapped/de-snapped, seeing as all the vaccine does, is add markers to your bloodstream, that'll aid your natural defense mechanism to more easily recognize the invading forces...
And, erm... you would NOT want me to control the weather, because I'm not really a fan of extreme heat and/or summer. If the phrase "Winter is coming" wasn't already taken, I would have adopted it myself. Nowadays, I can't stand the bloated and lethargic feeling I get when trying to get things done during the warmer season.
Everything is worse: less appetite, less energy, less sleep, etc. etc. If I had control over the weather, you'd never see anything sunnier than a mild spring time...
I do have to add that it's also the more humid sea climate over here, which makes any kind of above average heat also feel really sticky and sweaty, which is where the bloat comes in too.
When I'm abroad, in far away countries (man, that now almost feels like decades ago) the heat is usually of the dry kind, and far easier to handle, in my opinion.
@ThanosReXXX "Winter is coming"
So I see you got the Gauntlet working again.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/winter-weather/february-like-blast-to-send-temps-crashing-in-northeast/924191
My "spring break" getaway yesterday transformed into winter break last night into today.
@rjejr Ouch. Well, over here, temperatures are also dropping rapidly. From a nice and gentle breeze at 73.4 degrees at the beginning of this week to a cold, blasting wind at 46.4 degrees today...
No snow as of yet, but it has been predicted for Sunday night into Monday morning, so we shall see.
Over here, they have a saying (in rhyme) which roughly translates to "April will do what it will", which in a lot of cases is true, at least over here. I've seen dozens of April snow days during my time over here, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if it actually is going to snow on Sunday.
But one thing that IS different compared to back then, is the wild and almost chaotic temperature changes within the space of a week. That's really something of the current decade, and I hope it's not a precursor to a new ice age, seeing as all Ice Ages before have been following upon more tropical eras, which is the one we appear to be in right now, what with the Earth heating up way too rapidly...
And if it is, then I hope I'll be long gone before then, because even though I like winter and snow, you can only see so much of it before it becomes boring. And even just thinking about having to shovel my way out of my own apartment every day is already starting to make me feel tired...
@ThanosReXXX "73.4 degrees at the beginning of this week to a cold, blasting wind at 46.4 degrees"
Thanks for using Fahrenheit, you know the meaning of those temps in Celsius - 8 to 22 - would have been lost on me. 🤷♂️ That's what it's been like over here as well. Mother Nature going though menopause w/ the hot flashes.
Since C' has a wider range do they use decimals over there? I know I've never seen 73.4 before, temp is ALWAYS a whole number, positive or negative. I saw some weather reports when I was over there 30 years ago but I remember it was always whole numbers on tv, probably around 25 or so when I was there in July.
@rjejr Haha, had to use a calculator, though 'cause I'm completely reformed and only use the metric system and the rather inaccurate Celcius scale. So, anything that's miles, lbs, stone, Fahrenheit and so on needs to be Googled, before I can confidently post it. I can average miles, seeing as it's roughly a 1 to 1,6 difference, so I can guesstimate that, but the rest? That's all abracadabra to me...
As for the temperature ranges: yup, only round figures, never numbers after the comma.
They simply just round it off, either upwards or downwards, depending on if it's above or equal to/below a half degree, so 20,6 gets rounded off to 21, and 20,5 or lower is just 20.
To kind of negate the petty number f***ers among us, they'll usually just use the word "averages" in the weather report. So, for example: "this weekend, we'll see averages of between 20 degrees in the West, and 24 degrees inland and down south, with a mild breeze on the coast".
@ThanosReXXX So basically when you wake up in the morning the temp is either 8 or 28 and you just dress accordingly. Must be tuff on the women's fashion industry, I'm pretty sure every few degrees difference here women need a different set of clothes for it. Though I suppose over there women just have a set of clothes for every degree Celsius, then they don't have to think about it. Must cut down on changing clothes mid-day at least, I know my wife has a problem w/ all those days that start at 30 and end at 60, which b/c I'm on the ocean seems to happen a lot.
Weather, it's it's own thing. OK, 1 of those it's should probably not have an apostrophe but for the life of me I can't figure out which one.
@rjejr The second one, obviously. Just rethink the sentence in proper English, and you should get "it is its own thing".
As for changing clothes: not for these wildly fluctuating instances. If on one single day, it's colder, then I just weather the storm. I have made some mistakes in either direction, sweating my socks off with a WAY too wintery jacket when the weather all of a sudden turned better within the space of a day, and the other way around with a simple training/track suit jacket when the weather suddenly turned colder.
It happens, and I just shrug it off. Weather is so unpredictable that I usually rather just look out from my balcony in the morning, then taking the weather report at face value, or any value, for that matter...
@ThanosReXXX "The second one, obviously. Just rethink the sentence in proper English, and you should get "it is its own thing".
Proper English? Fuggedaboutit. 😂
That actually helped though, thanks. 👍
Well weather won't affect your wardrobe, you're a guy. Pants and coat, done. But women, women got slacks, skirts, dresses, tights, leggings, pantyhose, blouses, shawls, shirts, scarves, hats, gloves. Women don't just put on clothes, they assemble and ensemble. Weather matters.
@rjejr Of course it helped, I ain't a sales trainer for nothing. Language skills are also a part of that...
As for the clothing conundrum: well, our wardrobe may be quite a bit simpler than women's, but you wouldn't want to be wearing a padded ski jacket in the middle of summer, or a track suit jacket in the winter, now would you? So, with the weather fluctuating so erratically of late (this Monday, we've had a continuous carousel of weather symptoms, going from hail to rain to sun to snow and then from sun back into hail and snow again, all in the space of one day) even being a simple-clothed man person could still pose a challenge...
@ThanosReXXX "ski jacket in the middle of summer, or a track suit jacket in the winter"
I wasn't talking about seasonal, all men have 2 dresser drawers - 1 w/ winter clothes, 1 w/ summer clothes - I was talking abut how temperatures fluctuate from morning to afternoon to evening so women have to decide which time of day to dress for, as you pointed out in this sentence - "this Monday, we've had a continuous carousel of weather symptoms, going from hail to rain to sun to snow and then from sun back into hail and snow again, all in the space of one day"
If you're a woman getting up in the morning to dress for that, where do you even begin? 🤯 And I haven't even mentioned shoes yet. I don't know what average footwear ownership is over there but I'd guess over here men own on average about 4 pairs of shoes - sneakers, sandals, dress shoes, work shoes - and women about 120.
@rjejr That's just about as universal a truth as you can get, so where that is concerned, there is no "over there", or over here, for that matter.
But believe you me: we men might be sooner willing/able/indifferent to weathering the storm, but in a lot of cases, it doesn't mean that we like being in the "not dressed for the occasion" situation. Suffice to say where normally, me and my dad would take a stroll down the countryside, we now decided to stay in, simply because of the weather being WAY too erratic.
On a side note: and in my line of business, I only ever see women in more casual clothes in the summer, and more the female version of suit & tie in the more cooler/colder seasons. And needless to say, there's no dresser drawer for them to run to in the office. Would be one hell of a sight, though...
@ThanosReXXX "there's no dresser drawer for them to run to in the office. Would be one hell of a sight, though.."
Maybe you're in the wrong line of work? 😉
https://worldnewsdailyreport.com/miami-stripper-arrested-for-squirting-vaginal-fluids-at-police-officers-in-self-defense/?fbclid=IwAR2wveJMDFZgfQaPaEC5Dxo_zUl818gyvVJhfHFoHvmElbPa2o8CGcuDNds
@rjejr Wait, WHAT???
@ThanosReXXX Don't worry, it's just a made up story but for some reason it gained traction on Twitter yesterday. I knew you'd enjoy it. 😎
@rjejr Oh, it's one of those Trump... errrr... I mean fake news sites. We got 'em here too. Never much liked or appreciated them, because they are seldomly funny (in my opinion).
I actually wanted to edit the previous comment, adding to it that I was seriously wondering about how that link got through the NLife site/moderation filters...
@ThanosReXXX I think the World News Daily Report is a British tabloid so they're probably used to the nonsense. 😉
Tabloids have their palce aws a distraction, no worse than those "The Real Wives of ****" shows. Or anything KArdashian related.
Back in the 90's the Weekly World News was all the rage. This was my favorite ongoing storyline. I had the cover hanging up on my apartment wall next to my Jimi Hendrix poster. 🤣
@rjejr Aw man, did you REALLY have to mention the Kardashians?
@ThanosReXXX Its' 2 sides of the same coin. Kardashians & Trump on 1 side, Batboy and UFO's on the other. Fake reality that people think is real, and fake reality that people think is fake. The problem is it's all fake, the news just puts the obvious fake stuff out there to make the not obvious fake stuff appear real. People like a spectrum to display their idiocy.
You'd be surprised by the numbers of people that thought (or still think) that Batboy is real. It's probably the same people that are still hunting for Bigfoot or Nessie...
@rjejr Oh, boy. Have I got some exciting bit of news for you, my friend...
@ThanosReXXX Thanks for the link. I actually read the entire article, I know you're impressed. 😁
Seems weird they are putting out Magic Leap 2, surprised they don't call it Magic Leap AR or Magic Leap EE (Enterprise Edition) so they don't point out what a failure the first unit was. Even if nothing comes out of Magic Leap at least they are a thing or MS would have yet another monopoly w/ HoloLens.
Either way, I'm thinking I'm getting too old for new tech. I was bummed about Nintendo seeming to kill off Labo, but cardboard is old school tech, not new school tech. Have you seen the new PSVR 2 controllers? Somebody has been reading too many comic books.
PS - Batboy IS real. 😉
@rjejr Yeah, I've already seen those. They REALLY took a page out of the Oculus Rift book there:
They only added an extra ring, apparently...
@ThanosReXXX That extra ring is what makes them so superheroy though. 😁 They're like built in Dr. Strange magic.
This is one of the first comics I bought as a kid, I always had a thing for gauntlets and gloves.
Then this guy a couple of years later.
Then this guy 2 issues later.
@rjejr Yeah, that extra ring on the controller is so "no, we didn't copy anyone else's design at all, it's just made to look super cool and edgy". Typical Sony...
So, always had a thing for gloves/gauntlets, huh? Makes me wonder why you haven't become a surgeon or an OB-GYN...
@ThanosReXXX "why you haven't become a surgeon or an OB-GYN..."
B/c I was too busy trying to become a superhero. Made my own Wolverine gloves and everything. 😁 Well maybe vigilante anti-hero is more like it. 😉
@rjejr I suppose the NES Powerglove was on the wanted list as well, then?
@ThanosReXXX Well I never had an NES, but yeah, kinda wanted the glove. 😉
