Upcoming '90s-arcade-inspired racer Hotshot Racing has been given a new release date on Switch and other platforms. It'll be speeding onto the eShop on 10th September.
Developed by a team of racing game veterans who have previously worked on titles like Outrun 2 and Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing Transformed, Hotshot Racing is aiming to tickle that retro arcade nostalgia bone. It was originally planned to launch in June but was pushed back to ensure that the game was as good as it could possibly be.
It promises 60 frames per second gameplay on Switch, multiple single-player championships, eight-player online game modes and four-player local split-screen play. Creative director, Trevor Ley, says that we should expect post-release content, too:
"This game has been on a massive journey for the past decade from the initial concepts to Kickstarter pitch and now on the final stretch to launch. We can’t wait to see all the in-game leaderboards light up with the fastest times from players and see multiplayer servers full to the rafters! We have plans for this game past launch as well, so it’ll be great to see what the world thinks of the game post-September 10th."
It'll be priced at £15.99 / €19.99 / $19.99 when it launches next month.

Virtually the same trailer as the last
Looks fun, but that price is a tad off.
Man this looks like a blast! Should look terrific in handheld!
Glad to see sumo onboard this looks great
Finally a release date, looks great, cannot wait. Surprised at such a low price, hope it has decent content. Then again Rush Rally 3 is cheap as chips and it's one of the best racers on the Switch.
Wasn’t this supposed to come to WiiU exclusively?
@nmanifold I agree thought I was the only one who enjoyed rush rally 3 it’s great has the odd stutter but loads of content and courses
What's selling me on this is that they also designed, modeled and animated the racers!
Wow, such an original comment section.
20% Off Pre Order on eshop
They spent a whole decade on this...mmm ok...
An homage to the N64!
finally!!!!! Can't wait!! Been following this for years!!!!!!!!!
@koekiemonster No, that was this one, but that has been canceled:

@Burning_Spear No, actually to Daytona and Virtua Racing.
Seriously good game, played it via Xbox Insider..
Worth the money in my view..
As we will not get Daytona, this will do.... I guess........😢😢 🤬🤬
@ThanosReXXX The cars kinda reminds me of top gear overdrive on 64, but the courses are virtua racing all the way.
This will be the second racing game I own on switch; the first being rush rally. I have very high hopes for this game and have been anxiously awaiting its arrival. Looks to scratch, nay burn rubber, on my itch for a fun, good racer. Balances formulas of both old and new; the things that made each “era” great combined into one.
Anyway, just know, I’m buying on September 10th!
Love the colors and clean art style. I look forward to it.
Any word on local wireless play
Curious as to how this handles, it looks like it will be fun to play...I do like an arcade vibe.
@doctorhino Yeah, it's kind of a mix of all kinds of arcade racers, but the main influences were Daytona for the car models, an Virtua Racing for the graphics/aesthetics.
Sumo's arcade racing games are fantastic - GTI Club (sadly delisted) and Sonic Transformed are both 'arcade perfect'
So many great Arcade Racers coming out at last. I'm probably going for Inertial Drift first as the PC demo was incredible, then maybe pick this up when it goes on sale.
@ThanosReXXX I only see like one stock car. The cars in daytona usa didn't have spoilers either.
It will be all in the way the cars handle if this is a purchase or not.
Finally, a release date. This one's been on my short list for awhile now.
@doctorhino It's just inspired by those games, so it doesn't have to be a 1:1 copy. The developers themselves have mentioned these titles as inspiration, so that is how I knew about it.
I will be playing this one on Xbox One since it is coming to Game Pass!
Looks real good but I already scratched the retro racer itch with Horizon Chase Turbo. I'm not a big racing game player so my racing game playing is few and far in between. I've been in the market for a more modern racer so lately I've been focusing on the upcoming Switch port of NSF: Hot Pursuit (hopefully that comes to fruition).
If there's a bargain sale on this game down the line maybe I'll give it go.
@ThanosReXXX Ah, that makes sense if they mentioned Daytona as I only see a passing resemblance to that game myself. Hopefully it's good, I feel like horizon chase turbo has a more 16 bit/Cruis'n USA feel to it and this might not even compete directly with that style.
So this will be a limited physical down the line at some point probably. Great...
I'm very much looking forward to this game. It looks like a lot of fun based on those videos of the developers competing against each other. I love 60fps racing games and this one has a very appealing visual style.
@ThanosReXXX Did they finally cancel that one? I haven't heard a word about it in a couple of years.
This reminds me, Nintendo and Raw Thrills still need to port Cruis'n Blast to the Switch.
Will be trying this on Gamepass but might double dip.
20% off at mo so only £12.79
Can't see it on Xbox or ps stores either
@ThanosReXXX I'm hoping it plays like the stock car in Virtua Racing on the 32X, that was a great car to play with.
Looks stunning!
Does that mean it's 30fps in 4 player?
Interesting but a bit too expensive
We have a few decent racers on the Switch already so how would this stand out?
TBF, I am keeping an eye out for this myself as well.
It does have local wireless play.
Keeps me wondering why we don't have Daytona USA HD on Switch yet. And where the heck is "90s Arcade Racer" ?
Hope it's good, then we can all forget about 90s Arcade Racer.
Free on Xbox game pass hmmm
@doctorhino True. I also own Horizon Chase Turbo, and it never occurred to me to compare the two, other than that they're both arcade racers.
@Tasuki Oh, it was canceled quite a while ago already. I do believe that the article I linked to even mentions something about it, but if not, there's probably more recent articles to be found about it.
@WiltonRoots I honestly wouldn't be able to tell, since I never played that one. I do now own Virtua Racing on the Switch, but that's not the same, probably.
@ThanosReXXX Ahh ok no worries, let's just say it handled well, it had good weight to it and had nice power sliding...not dissimilar to Daytona but less slippery.
Oh baby day one for me!!
@ThanosReXXX Didn't see it in that article, but I do remember hearing that the creator moved on to something else.
Looks very cool. I'll wait for a sale down the road as I'm currently playing through Burnout.
@WiltonRoots Well, sounds like something I would have liked to play, but I'd only be able to do so in an emulator, seeing as I don't own any actual 16 bit Sega hardware. I do have the Megadrive Mini, but that doesn't really count.
@Tasuki Well, moved on...
More like the publisher strong-arming him and stealing his game from him, and subsequently doing f*** all with it, leaving a VERY promising looking arcade racer in Limbo forever...
Nintendo refused to cancel my preorder for this lol how weird of them, cheapskates as I'm buying tons of games at mo, but do have Xbox game pass
Can't wait for Virtua Racing 2... I mean Hotshot Racing.
@koekiemonster You're thinking of 90s Arcade Racer. That game is still MIA.
This is another game.
While we're discussing other games, what happened to that Burnout 3 game? You know, the one made by ex-Criterion guys, which looked like a straight indie resurrection of Burnout 3?
