Fairy Tail was confirmed to be coming to Switch just days ago, and now Koei Tecmo and developer Gust Studios have shared more juicy details about the upcoming release.
If you missed the news, the game has been described as a "magical JRPG" based on Hiro Mashima’s best-selling manga and anime series of the same name. It follows the plot found in 'The Grand Magic Games' story arc, allowing players to experience the episodes of this fan-favourite storyline in game form. It'll feature never-before-seen story and quest elements, too.
So, about these new details. We'll keep things short and get straight to the good stuff:
Throughout their journey, players will be able to form a party from a selection of over ten iconic characters, including: the fire dragon slayer, Natsu Dragneel; the celestial mage, Lucy Heartfilia; the ice-make mage, Gray Fullbuster; the fairy queen ‘Titania’, Erza Scarlet; and the young sky dragon slayer, Wendy Marvell. With a wealth of guild members to recruit to their party, players can form their own dream team – even including an unlikely group of allies for their own unique adventure.
The fiery and intense magical battles from the series are breathtakingly brought to life in FAIRY TAIL’s environment; with a diverse range of magic available for the extraordinary characters to wield. Renowned moves from the series light up the screen, with some characters such as Natsu being able to take advantage of mode changes – like utilizing the eye-popping Lightning Fire Dragon Mode. In addition, some guild members will be available to support in battle; including the Fairy Tail Guild Master, Makarov Dreyar, who can be called in to provide powerful aid on the battlefield.
In FAIRY TAIL, completing battles and quests will not only level up party members, it will lead to character bonding scenarios, provide options to upgrade the guild, and eventually raise the ‘Guild Rank’ – enabling players to take on more challenging missions in their quest to become the greatest guild in Fiore.
The game is scheduled to arrive on Switch and other platforms in 2020; we'll make sure to keep an eye out for any more specific information while we wait.

Not a fan of Fairy Tail at all but at least it's not an arena brawler for the fans out there, eh?
Not a fan of Fairy Tail also.
But... I only have interest with Shirtless Gray Fulbuster from Fairy Tail.
He looks very sexy in shirtless and six pack. 😘
The rest just Meh....
It looks okay, i want to see more gameplay footage before i judge.
Will reserve a spot in my library for this one, but def not my first priority this time.
am i remembering right, was every arc the same, random group with the number of members in the name gets friendship PAWNCHED?
Looks pretty decent, albeit way too short of a trailer to actually be able to get any idea about the game itself. Liking the cell-shaded look, though. Kinda reminds me of the Tales series.
As a massiv Fairy Tail fan I have been waiting for years for a big budget game based on it. I really hope this will live up to my personal hype. The chosen arc is a great fit and the game looks promising
Also, any game where I can play as Erza (aka one of the most badass females in all of manga/anime) is nothing but a plus!

Was already extremely excited when I saw the PS4 announcement... now that I know that it's coming to Switch, I'm even MORE excited... Sure, I would've preferred a fighting game kind of like a current version of the DS titles (actually, I think I'm ALWAYS wanting a fighting game), but definitely no complaints about it being an RPG, as well... hmmm... thinking about it, a Warriors rendition of this game would work VERY NICELY!!!
While I did enjoy the Grand Magic Games Arc, it really was just a fighting tournament so I think they are going to do a brawling centric game which is a let down.
@Luigi-number1
Well...
Gray Fulbuster was just the only one thing that stole my attention.
The other characters were just not really interesting to getting know.
I recently got into fairy tail, a d this game looks really good, definitely gonna look into this
@Luigi-number1 Hey, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to thump a six-pack shirtless guy but unless you have an... active imagination it’s rather difficult to accomplish with 2D fellas.
@Luigi-number1 I'll admit I agree with you here. But what about the people who talk about the female characters too? If you're calling him out, you should be calling everyone else out too.
@ThatNyteDaez really. Where. I haven’t read anywhere in any Nintendo life comment sections talking about shirtless busty six pack girls
@ThatNyteDaez you are right, but no one was talking about them, at least not because of their appearance.
This trend is getting really boring about six packs and sexy boys. Game looks good tho
Nice! I love fairy tail and I'm happy it's not a fighting game!
Keeping an eye on this one. I love the Fairy Tail characters but I've only read the first arc. The characters and the world they live in are good enough to make an excellent game, but I'll need a few more details before I commit to it.
Id never even heard of Fairy Tail before this game presentation but already I'm super excited for it.
I'm interested but I need to see more before I'm sold.
I have a friend in school who's hard into Fairy Tail, I'm sure he'd lose his mind over a game like this existing
I've read a few volumes of the manga passively but I haven't really had the time to dedicate to reading to it purely. I might get back into it and get this game since I liked Koei's Attack on Titan games a lot.
@Anti-Matter @Luigi-number1 @ThatNyteDaez I agree, in part with both you and Luigi. Though, Anti Matter, your response about the only character being interesting because of aesthetics sounds a little shallow. Surely, an interest in personality should be prioritised, no matter sexual preference? I personally believe that, but I guess that's not what everyone thinks.
Careful NL, it’s an anime game with some very chesty girls in it.
@PBandSmelly I want a jojo fighter from capcom in the style of marvel vs capcom 2. Like that jojo’s game from the 90’s. TBH I want any license I like to have a 2D fighting game in the style of either marvel vs capcom 2, skullgirls or darkstalkers. I miss pixalart fighters with highly detailed sprites and animations.
@Jayofmaya
I have ever watched some episodes of Fairy Tail (just only first season).
Actually, there were two characters caught my attention after i remembered.
They were Gray Fulbuster and Lyon Vastia.
Both of them like to take off their shirt before use their Ice power.
I didn't really follow all the episodes since i only paid attention on Gray and Lyon from the episode of their duel and after battle.
@Anti-Matter Why do people downvote your comments often? Do they have some sort of vendetta against you? Your comments don't offend and you're quite hilarious at times IMO. Keep being you!
That aside, I could never get into Fairy Tale. It has too much fanservice that makes it a cringe fist for me. But this news is good for its fans!
Tecmo and Gust, so....an Atelier game in a Fairy Tail skin?? 😙
@Arcamenel There was much more to the Grand Magic Games Arc than just the tournament. Does the Eclipse Gate ring a bell? On top of that, there were the machinations of the Raven Tail and Sabertooth Guilds. Plus, I appreciate it as a rare example of a manga/anime tournament arc where the tournament was actually fully completed rather than prematurely cancelled or downgraded at some point.
Anyway, I really like the look of this, especially with Hiro Mashima himself supervising.
@graysoncharles I agree the payoff was terrible, but they still served to deepen the plot of the early portion of the arc.
A Fairy Tail JRPG!? Oh heck yes! Sign me up! Day 1!!!!
I get that there seem to be a lot of people who don't like Fairy Tail but I am not one of them. Fairy Tail and Bleach are the only "mega long" anime that held my interest all the way till the end, and unlike Bleach, I'm still mostly enjoying Fairy Tail right at the end of the anime! Naruto, One Piece, Detective Conan, Pokemon and Dragon Ball all lost me for one reason or another.
Never really clicked with Fairy Tail, but it had its moments, so it's kinda nice seeing it get what looks like a quality adaptation.
Now, if only Bleach can get similar treatment....
