If you've played the Switch version of Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package since it was released last week, you might have noticed the open-world sandbox is a bit rough around the edges. To make the experience more enjoyable on Nintendo's hybrid device, Deep Silver is issuing its first patch for this version of the game later this week. Below are the various fixes and improvements you can expect, courtesy of the Deep Silver website:
- added auto-matchmaking feature
- added low resolution particle rendering and related performance update
- added credits sequence updates to icons & names
- fixed an issue where audio would desync after switching to the main menu and back
- subtitle fixes for female character customization
- fixed user confirmation pop-up to reconnect to Nintendo Switch Online after connection loss
- fixed auto matchmaking for public game play
- fixed DLC Russian & Japanese localization
- crash fix: forced termination may occur after selecting “End game” on the pose screen
- general iterative bugfixes and performance optimizations
- infinite loading screen fixed
- user confirmation popup to reconnect to Nintendo Switch Online after connection loss
- fixed International & Japanese subtitles and lip sync
- subtitle fixed (subtitles for female character)
This patch will be ready for you to download to your Nintendo Switch from Thursday 16th May at 3AM CEST/ 4AM BST/ 9PM PST (15th May).
Deep Silver also mentioned how any "unusual issues" could be reported to the technical support team. This covers the following:
- Input lag
- Default low sensitivity in controls
- Slider sensitivity in character creation
- Texture and graphic bugs
If you encounter any of these problems, you can use this form to report the issue. You'll also be required to provide as much information as possible (along with your Switch system number and SD card) so the tech support team can replicate and resolve the issue.
How has your experience with Saints Row been? Have you encountered any technical issues? Tell us below.

Sounds good if they are trying get on top of issues.
Would be cool to see SR4 Complete on switch.
I’ve played it all weekend and have found it to be a superb experience anyway without the patch
All that stuff is good but can they please add (optional) gyro aiming.
Until it matches the 360 original—which is eight years old—I’m going to sit on the $40 I have set aside.
You shouldn't have to patch a port of an old game, post-launch. Isn't that what development time on the port was for?
I’m enjoying Saints Row: The Third a lot for my Nintendo Switch! It’s a fantastic game!
@RainbowGazelle Like any other kind of development, porting an old game to a new system isn't a straightforward and hassle free process; there will be bugs. There will be old bugs that they didn't catch previously in the old code (hopefully, not too many of those). There will be new bugs in whatever new code they have to add or modify to make the game run in the new hardware. And there also will be new bugs caused by unexpected interactions between the old code and the new code, and between the old code and the new hardware. And with open world games being as complex as they are, it's highly unlikely that any development team will be able to catch and fix all bugs before release, no matter whether it's a completely new game or a port of an old one.
So to me, it makes perfect sense that they couldn't squash every possible bug in this port before launch. Kudos to them for fixing some of them post-launch instead of going: "Yep, good enough!"
The game shouldn't of had all these problems to begin with.
No gyro aiming = not interested.
I've not noticed any major issues on my playthrough so far (at least not anything major I'd gripe about or game breaking). Some of the online qualms may be valid but since I'm single player only it's not my concern.
Glad they are patching it. Still on my list. The eshop sale got all of my money.
Wait is there matchmaking with randoms in this game? I wasn't aware that there was.
Patching bugs in a game is good. But a patch like this in a port of an old game just screams lazy port. I don't buy for a second that the game cannot run on Switch. It runs on older, weaker hardware.
I'm tempted to buy it and support relatively big releases like this. Is there anything that should keep me from buying this game?
"added low resolution particle rendering"
On an 8 year old Xbox 360 game - 🙄
Switch: Metacritic 6.8 User 4.1
PC: Metacritic 8.2 User 8.1
I already have the better version for home. I can play/do something else on the GO.
By the time it is "fixed" it will be in the bargain bin for $19. At that point worth a buy for someone who has never played it.
Have the limited edition game exclusive version ordered (and hopefully delivered) but I’m unable to go home for a bit so hoping when I finally get home this will be sorted and running nicely. Looking forward to it
No mention on a straight up performance fix? It chugs terribly and is heavily pixelated. Especially docked. They should’ve let this one cook for a little longer. I almost regret my purchase. Luckily, it’s still fun. Whilst being simultaneously disappointing.

For those that want specifics, Digital Foundry
My son and I are have a blast with this.
Having this game portable is amazing and it will be even better after a patch!
@JayJ Have you played it docked yet? If so does it run as badly as many are making out? I have it downloaded and plan on playing it docked but all the comments I've read about how badly it runs in docked mode have put me off from playing it. The patch will supposedly arrive on Thursday but looking at the patch notes and the comments by the developer, I think the performance improvements will be negligible. I didn't know until after purchasing that Deep Silver Games are owned by THQ Nordic. If I had I probably would've waited to see how it turned out. Nearly every game THQ Nordic puts out has performance issues.
The Digital Foundry analysis just released is quite damning.
Saying it's just above Ark is a bit awks!
Honestly thought this game was going to be ported with a bit more care like Darksiders with the options between 60fps performance and 30fps quality modes. Silly me!
The game looks fun, especially in portable play, but I'll await post patch re-evaluations before I consider buying this.
@OorWullie - I'm nine hours in, playing docked. I honestly can't say the framerate has bothered me, it seems perfectly serviceable. Neither have I seen much slowdown yet, certainly nothing as bad as certain areas in LA Noire.
I'm not particularly 'high maintenance' when it comes to framerate and pop-in etc, so maybe I'm more tolerant than most. (As someone who started out on a Spectrum and Amiga.) OK, the graphics aren't state of the art, but moments like standing on your penthouse balcony, looking over the city at night and down at the cars and pedestrians moving around are still impressive to me.
There is a lot going on at street level, and the driving can be frantic so there isn't a lot of time to find fault with the scenery when you're tearing around.
I'm enjoying the game, it's a giggle and I don't regret the purchase.
I've had two crashes, both when accessing my crib, so my advice is always save first!
I've been having fun playing this. It runs smoothly and looks great in handheld mode.
I never use my Switch docked so I've been lucky regarding the poor perforance when it's played this way.
Ran decent enough for me. Ya, I've noticed some drops. But it's been playable. And honestly I wouldn't waste my money buying any other version anyways. If I can't play on Switch I just dont want it.
Played on handheld and no issues. Saints Row 4 will be great but SR2 is my personal favourite completed twice with all DLC.
@Mii_duck Cheers for that. That makes me feel better about my purchase. I'm not particularly high maintenence either, I've been at it since the 2600 and also the Spectrum..I'm playing Dragons Dogma just now and that doesn't exactly run perfectly and can look pretty rough in places, yet a lot of the game still impresses me. I'm sure I'll get on fine with Saints Row.
Yeah because just good enough should be ok for you when paying full price for a aged game that just launched but yet needs a month 1 patch... No! why do people accept this garbage ?? Dev's used to play-test games for up to 3 years or more before launch, now it's a barely playable game and the publishers just dump and run...You want this to stop, then stop pre-ordering games and stop buying day 1, wait until they make it a playable game, then maybe they'll learn..
@TTgowings - in which way have you found it "barely playable"?
@Kochambra I suppose that is fair in a complicated game. However, going by the list of fixes for this gamr; many shouldn't have got through with some basic testing.
@TTgowings It's not full price though.
But but but it runs really well on Switch, Dom even says so in his review "As a port, the Nintendo Switch version of Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package looks and runs really well – especially for a game as old as Skyrim. The frame rate only ever stutters during cutscenes, and runs super-smooth during actual gameplay." Or did he just make all of that up? 😉
@OorWullie My experience is largely the same is @Mii_duck
I've played about 6 of the 10 hours in handheld, but the docked hours were almost in one straight go early saturday morning. I did have two freezes, both in a crib as well, involving a sub menu.
The game definitely handles all the stuff going on around you much better than LA Noire. And the world is more populated, too.
I've noticed a few sound desyncs in one two missions, and both involved using a minigun, it just involved the gun 'chain' noise dropping out for less than a second. Otherwise, I'll blow things up left and right and can't stagger the graphics or performance.
I think you'd enjoy it.
Is the game old? Yes. So are LA Noire, Darksiders, Dark Souls. Games weren't perfect then, or now. I've played Ark on Switch, this is nothing like it, performance-wise.
My switch is mainly played docked unless the family want to watch something on TV.
So reading the reviews this game is not recommended to play in docked?
So has this/will this patch rectify the ‘unplayable’ docked mode that review sites like IGN have stated?
I’ve never played this game ever and would like to have it but I’m not going to spend money on a game I can’t play on my big screen via the dock.
@Perryg92
This game runs fine and I honestly can’t see what all the moaning is about
@Laxeybobby
I’ve found no issues whatsoever running this game docked at all
@TTgowings
This is more than playable. What is wrong with it?
@Perryg92
This game is absolutely nowhere near as bad as Ark. Whoever said that is quite frankly a moron and shouldn’t be aloud to spill utter crap on that level
SR4 is an even more demanding game, it was sub HD on PS3 with poor performance, so I cant see it working well on Switch. I still enjoyed playing it back then. Even the PS4 version of SR4 didnt manage a consistent 60fps. Agents of Mayhem ran poorly too on PS4, be suprised if they fix this.
@Woosh193 well the guy who said it makes a living out of testing games in such a manner so he probably knows what he's talking about. You can deny the issues exist to your hearts content but the video evidence suggests otherwise as does the developers own actions.
That being said it's still perfectly possible to enjoy games that run as they basically did last generation but I'd be hoping for more from such a port and for a reviewer to say that its super smooth is laughable, which makes him look either incompetent or a liar.
@BanjoPickles
I don't know how this comment got downvotes. It makes perfect sense. Maybe if they get it all worked out they will have a team that can port more successfully to the Switch in the future.
@AlohaPizzaJack Cheers for that. I'm looking forward to getting stuck into it now. I think the last GTA style game I played was Scarface on Wii over 10 years ago.
That’s great news. I’ve been having a great time with the game, but it’s been a bit of a struggle with the controls. I just chalked it up to the price of admission for an open world game on the switch, but if they can make it run smoother that is much appreciated.
@Perryg92 The digital Foundry analysis is excellent. Yeah, this game would really benefit from a performance mode.
I wish Wipeout HD would get ported to Switch and run at the same resolution and frame rate as it did on PS3! It would also be amazing to get Gran Tourismo 5 and 6 on Switch running at PS3 levels. Ridge Racer 7, Driver San Francisco, Zone of the Enders 1 and 2, Virtua Tennis 3 and 2009, Soul Calibur 4, Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction and A Crack In Time all run at 60 fps on PS3 and look fantastic. I wish developers would port 60 fps PS3 games to Switch! Oh, and I want to randomly mention that Mutant Blobs Attack on Switch targets 60 fps and looks and plays way better than on Vita! It has little drops, but generally looks great and I'm glad I picked it up.
@carlos82
It’s a handheld game console at the end of the day. Anyone that expects ps4 or xbox one graphics are deranged.
@Woosh193 not according digital foundry. Bashed the port saying it is as bad as ark. It’s sad but negativity like that seems to only hit Nintendo games for them. They could have waited until after the patches to do their video. They purposely wanted to get it out to tarnish the switch. Saying basically the console isn’t good enough to handle games like this.
People complaining about performance are playing docked. This game was optimized for portable.
@Woosh193 nobody is expecting that, we just want a smooth ride. Skyrim is a great example of a game that ran poorly on PS3 but is a dream to play on the Switch. This however just has the same dodgy performance it always had and when you have the likes of Doom and Wolfenstein 2 running better on this hardware something is wrong.
@Qwertyninty they love the Switch, just see the videos on Hellblade and Doom for example or even Mortal Kombat 11, it's not their fault somebody releases a dodgy port and I suspect they'll do a follow up video if any patch miraculously fixes its performance
@carlos82 every now and then and maybe it’s certain writers for DF they do a completely negative Switch/WiiU piece. Prior to the DF article we knew there were some issues but still the game was overall playable and fun. Now I’m seeing so many articles written completely negative saying the game shouldn’t be purchased. All those article are citing the DF video as their source. They knew what they were doing when they compared this game to ark. They also could have just waited until after the patch was released to analyze the game. I have seen many games from them take weeks if not months for their analysis. The reason they had to do this one so quickly is questionable to me. Knowing it had a patch coming this week.
@Qwertyninty
“ according to ....”
Have you played the game yet or are you being fed an opinion?
@carlos82
Hellblade is a fantasy achievement but as for doom, I couldn’t get used to the fuzzy graphics required to play the game
@nintendolie
It’s ok In docked. Really can’t see any issues
When you read some of the comments on here it’s so easy to see where the next generation of flat cap grumpy complaining old men is coming from. Some of them should be writing comedy scetches at 60 letters per second lol lol lol
Just fix the input lag pleeeeease!!
@IHateTombs
Thanks for the honest advice. Unfortunately I don’t have any other console as believe it or not I’ve only ever owned Nintendo consoles. So this will just remain in the shop until I hear something positive that would suggest it’s now worth purchasing.
@Woosh193 No it doesn't. I get really bad framerates and really bad input lag now even after the patch.
It's now 3 weeks after launch.. where's the damn fix?`the 1.4 patch did nothing for me. Still bad framerates and horrible input lag.
When there are lots of enemies on screen and you try to shoot some them. That is when the frame rate suffers a bit but the game is so much fun when it is chaotic. So many different things to do and it's exciting to knock people over with your car!
