If you were hoping the Super Nintendo game Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden would eventually be added to the Switch eShop or upcoming online service, we've got some unfortunate news to share. Bandai Namco reportedly has no intentions of making the classic fighting game publicly available on Nintendo's latest system.
When Nintendo Everything reached out to Bamco and asked if the 1993 game would be widely distributed at a later date, it was confirmed the title was a pre-order bonus only. If you want this nostalgic dose of Dragon Ball on your Switch, you'll need to pre-order Dragon Ball FighterZ before its big launch on 28th September. Alongside Super Butoden, those who pre-order the new game will also receive early access to SSGSS Goku and Vegeta.
What do you think about the decision to make this retro game exclusive to pre-orders? Would you like to be able to purchase the Super Nintendo classic as a standalone game and then wait until Dragon Ball FighterZ goes on sale or drops in price before you pick it up? Have you already pre-ordered? Tell us below.

I always hated stupid decisions like that and I've had that rom (and hundreds of other SNES, Gens, TG16, NES etc) for 15+ years now. Poop on them as well, for not giving me the same deal for preordering it on Steam earlier this year.
Its a super subpar fighter (the SNES game mind you) anyway, so really no reason for me to be salty.
That is just ridiculous, but I’d buy it in a heartbeat if it was the 2nd game.
Can you get it from pre purchasing it from the eshop or is it exclusive to store pre orders only?
But ya, me and someone was actually talking about this earlier, even brought up the time that this game was on the 3DS. It's really stupid to bring a game that not everyone can get, if it's a timed exclusive, that's another story.
@Undead_terror I just preordered it from the eshop, and yes, super butoden popped up right away.
@Undead_terror If you pre-order from the eShop you'll definitely receive the Super Nintendo game.
As for in-store, I had a look on the GameStop website and it says following:
Pre-order Dragon Ball FighterZ and receive Super Butoden and early access to SSGSS Goku and Vegeta!
Get the classic Japanese version of the DRAGON BALL Z: Super Butoden videogame that debuted on the Super Famicom and early access to SSGSS Goku & Vegeta playable characters!

Just realized that Dragon Ball FighterZ is gonna be locked behind the Nintendo online. Sigh... that can't be good for its player base. Its like one of the only fighting games I'm willing to play, but now this?
I'm whining. I get that, I understand. Guess I'll just become the best Super Butoden player on the planet. But wait, I can only get it with a preorder? My life is ruined.
Writing funny comments are hard. The fine line between sarcasm and whining is thin and dotted. Very excited for this game, and it's one of the only reasons I am getting the online. Hope others are able to play with!
Edit: Also, I remember that Steins;Gate is doing a similar thing with pre-orders. What is this and why is it spreading? Fire should help.
Is that SNES game even any good?
Meh that Super Famicom game was garbage anyways. I would had been super mad if it was Hyper Dimension but would care less about Super Butoden 1.
Typical Bamco decision. I have a pre order anyway but damn that sucks.
I could buy a real copy for like $5 if I cared anyways.
@Liam_Doolan @Undead_terror It’s showing up as part of the pre-order bonus at Best Buy as well, here in the states
Does it even have the original soundtrack?
Because if not then I'm not interested.
Dammit, I’ve no choice....
If it wasn’t for this pre-order bonus I’d totally wait it out for a sale price
I just can't get hyped for FighterZ so close to the release of Smash, especially since we're still getting new characters in Blazblue Cross Tag. This is a pretty neat incentive though.
I played Super Butoden at a friend's house years ago and comparing my times with that game to FighterZ, those who miss out aren't missing anything, to be honest. The controls are excruciatingly stiff to allow easier inputs to use special moves, the mechanics are bare to the bones (heck, you can't even charge up your Ki normally and being knocked down takes way too long to recover from), and the Story Mode is way too short. Now, I'd be able to give this a pass for being the first fighting game in the Dragon Ball franchise, but since then the franchise has evolved in the fighting department, making Super Butoden very difficult to go back to.
Super Butoden may also have a nostalgic appeal to those who grew up with it, but for me the only reason I see to investing this as a preorder bonus would be for "bragging rights", therefore it's best to just stick to the far superior FighterZ.
I don't like things like thing, nor do I understand it. They could make more money re-re-releasing it later. Why not give it as a preorder bonus cheaper and at least offer the option to buy it separately later? Not everyone always has the money to spare to buy things via pre-order, but would have the money to buy it later on even at a slightly higher price. They've ported the game, it's digital only. So what harm would there be, listing it on the eshop? This sort of thing is very anti-consumer. I fear it becoming more and more common.
I hope we get to see all the classic Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z games re-released for the Classic Game Selection even if they will only be Japanese exclusive.
holy crap, I just checked and the fighter edition bundle is $94.99 and the ultimate edition is $109.99. Can't believe there was going to be a more expensive bundle than NBA 2K18
Balls! I don't even have a Nintendo Switch yet! I was going to get the Nintendo Switch version when I finally got one some time next year, but now I have to miss out on Super Butoden again? C'mon...
From the way I see it, there’s still a chance they could release it in the future. Oh course they wouldn’t come out and tell us that because the whole point of it is to push pre-orders.
Already pre-ordered DragonBall Fighterz fighterz edition ($95) the day it went live. It's sitting on my Switch desktop along with the SNES game ready to play on launch day.
Fighterz is such a good fighting game that it was an easy decision to preorder it.
However I understand that not everyone can buy it now missing the chance to get the Snes game.
I wonder if GameStop will print the code on a receipt like they do for other pre-order bonuses or does it come in the box. I know in the past when I've wanted other exclusive pre-order DLC the manager that I've gotten to know, gladly gives me a code even when I don't spend anything that trip.
Edit: didn't they do the same thing when Extreme Butoden launched for the 3DS? I think it was a SNES game that came with it and never was released for the mainstream.
Sounds like to me, at least from the comments, that the pre-order bonus game is hardly worth getting mad about. I don't think I can get hyped for Dragon Ball Fighter Z anyway, with SSBU almost out. I typically don't enjoy any fighting game besides that one. Except Killer Instinct (new version) on Xbox One that is.
Hyper Dimension would've been a far better bonus.
@adh56 @Liam_Doolan @SMBSS Thanks for the heads up, fighterz looks fun, I might consider, but at the same time, I'm not really in the rush to get it. Got so many other games, yet I don't even bother to play them because thats just how I am.
@jtmnm
Wow that title brings me back. In high school with used to play that game online through emulators. That must have been 15 years ago.
I really hope hyper dimension will be a classic within the switch online subscription one moment in time, but I'm not counting on it.
Even worse, in my country it remains exclusive to one store, which is not the one I buy my games from.
Anyway, I don't need to have it day one. Bandai Namco games' price eventually drop, even on Switch. And in the meantime maybe we'll see the ultimate edition announcement with all DLC, something that happens with 90% of fighting games with additional contents. No rush.
Am I the only one who thinks this is a nice move by Bamco? Anyone who preorders a game is ultimately taking a punt, even on a well-reviewed nine-month-old game like FighterZ. Do we really know how well it's going to run on Switch? My experience with the beta was not 100% smooth. I actually applaud Bamco for trying to reward customers who are taking a risk by preordering. More companies should do the same.
if anyone gets a code and don't want let me know.
The preorder bonuses were what sealed the deal for me to get this day 1, I was really tempted to anyway
@edgedino After this news, I truly doubt people will pass the opportunity to make money out of it. Really sad, because I was hoping for the same.
@retro_player_22 lol I guess in your head the snes was garbage.it had some of the best games ever made lol just some facts
I much prefer the third game anyway. Much snappier action!
@Slim1999 I believe what @retro_player_22 meant to say is that he would have been mad if Hyper Dimension came as a preorder bonus only and was not made available to other Switch owners. However he's not mad in this case since it's Butouden 1 we're talking about, thus meaning he loves Hyper Dimension much more over Butouden 1 (with good reason I might add, the latter not being very good indeed) and still thus he doesn't hate the Super Famicom at all.
Meh. Would prefer if it was Super Butoden 3 with the awesome “Goten Vs. Trunks” theme.
@CanisWolfred ...Just buy it now and upload the game to your system later....?
@SMBSS now when you say "it popped right up" does this mean I can play it now if I preorder or the game just shows up as available for release date of Fighterz?
@Magrane Why would I do that? That's $60 that could go towards saving up for a Switch system, and playing it sooner. Plus, I'd be able to buy it at a reduced price, since it'll probably be 6-12 months before I plan to get a Switch. Not to mention I'm tired of Bamco locking major content behind pre-order bonuses to strong-arm customers into buying games they're on the fence about. It's a really scuzzy tactic that has led me to quite a bit of buyer's remorse, personally. There's just no good reason for me to pre-order a game for a console I don't own just so I can get a download code for a Super Famicom game that they could've easily released as a standalone product twice now, but instead they keep holding it for ransom.
...................I mean, I pre-ordered it anyways, but I'm just saying, I'm probably gonna regret it.
@NOOGA You have to wait for Fighter Z to actually be released, so I'll have to wait til the 28th.
Awful decision. Give it away to anyone that owns Fighterz.
Charge some paltry $5 for it on eShop otherwise.
"We like money, but like... we don't necessarily want it." Uhh... Ok.
What y'all whinin' for? Not like you pay anything extra for pre-ordering. You pay the same amount in the end whether you pre-order or not, only this time pre-ordering gets you a free game.
@Slim1999 Just cause there are some garbage games on it doesn't mean the entire console library itself was garbage. There are many great games on the system, Super Butoden 1 wasn't one of them, it's just an okay game.
A bit off topic but Nintendo did this with Zelda Four Swords 25th Anniversary release and it’s super frustrating that they never rereleased it. I don’t think it would diminish its value to people who got it as a free gift back then if people were allowed to purchase it now.
In my case I did get it back then but I’d like to get another copy so we can play it 3 player as a family. And I don’t think I’m alone in not seeing a problem with having more people to potentially play it with.
Since I doubt you can play against other owners of this dragon ball release it doesn’t have the same consequence of limiting multiplayer opportunities but I really just think no one who gets something for free has a problem with other people getting it later for money.
Make it $20 or something so the people who preordered feel good about getting such an expensive gift. Even if most scoff at the price those that didn’t preorder at least have the opportunity to buy it if they want.
Super Butoden holds a special place in my heart and I really do wish we could have just bought it as an E-shop game.
It was the FIRST fighting DB Game and the FIRST game I ever bought when I moved to Japan in 1993 and played the F## out of it since allowance was scarce then. To me it'll always be better than Hyper Dimension which I thought was mediocre and not really worth my money (To be fair, it was released late when the DB Manga ended and the DB Boom was fading in Japan.)
I may look for a second hand with code still intact since I've already played DB FighterZ on the PS4 and this version offers nothing extra outside of portability.
So I've pre ordered the game as I am very much looking forward to it.. but had to purchase a physical copy why is this not on the E-shop as a digital download of its out on Friday?
@StephenYap3 Of course it only goes up to the Imperfect Cell and Perfect Cell Sagas. Unlike the first Budokai game, it is very forgivable here due to the fact that the Cell Games Saga literally just aired a few months ago. At least, the games have always appeared to take more notice from the anime than the manga, which is why they didn't go farther than the anime. That always seems to be the case with anime games as well.
And it's really dumb to bring up the obvious fact it doesn't have elements from Super in it. People aren't brain dead around here. They're well aware it's a nineties game and that Super only aired a few years ago.
@Notshane Alright, I removed the references from Super from my post. Hopefully things are smoother here...
The pre-order bonuses should be made available to everyone who pre-ordered the game, digital or physical. I went physical purely because it was £10 cheaper than the digital version so have missed out by trying to save a few quid for what will be an expensive Siwtch-related-October.
