Horror has found a new home, and it's got Joy-Cons, HD Rumble and a penchant for carrying scary games around in handheld mode. Yes, games that make you leap out of your skin are all headed to Nintendo Switch and Those That Remain looks to keep that fear-inducing trend on track.
Set in the fictional US town of Dormont, you'll find the sleepy setting is gripped by a supernatural darkness and stalked by creatures that kill anything that walks in shadow. You'll need to stay in the light to survive, while using a series of portals that will help you step through into a twisted alternate dimension. Decisions made in one will affect the other, so there's a survival horror aspect at play mixed in with consequence-based decisions and environmental puzzling.
It's certainly an intriguing little curio with a vibe that's really shooting for a Silent Hill/Stranger Things vibe. Check out the announcement trailer below and let us know what you think...

Another one too look forward to it seems. Layers of Fear today, Detention next Thursday, Outlast 1&2 still down for Q1 and now this. The only real horror games Wii U had were the RCMADIAX games.
Looks alright, but I wish we'd get a AAA horror title soon... Heck I'd settle for a remaster of the WiiU Fatal Frame game.
I kinda wish Climax Studios (the guys behind the awesome, Wii timed exclusive, Silent Hill shattered memories) would make another horror title for the Switch!
@OorWullie there was that wiiu exclusive Fatal Frame game, and there have been rumors that the Steam indie title Project Scissors was supposed to come to the switch... But no word on if that is ever coming.
@MagnaRoader I reallybl wouldnt mind that either. Just wondering how they would implement it since you used the Gamepad as the camera. They should also redo part 4. I DO have the Eu version, but it never got officially released in the US
Meh, after playing horror games in PSVR nothing is scary on a screen anymore.
Just a heads-up for the editors, it's Those Who Remain, not Those That Remain.
They WAS also a kickstarter for a game called Cult County for Wii U and other consoles. Wish they'd try again. or hecj, maybe an HD version of Dementium 1 and 2!!!
@Nincompoop funny you say that, it's just a personal preference to me, but 1st person horror (even in VR) just dont scare me, for some reason. Will still play it, but they dont scare me like the old fashioned, 3rd person Res Evils, and Silent Hills.
Here is a great looking multiplatform game and people still complain about switch not getting certain games. Just enjoy the great ones we getting. I’m not a horror fan, but I play the occasional one and I’ll be getting this. I haven’t played layers of fear yet but it’s sitting there next to Bayonetta.
@QwertyQwerty I believe it's out tomorrow, we're chasing review code so we'll have you covered.
I don't play horror games other than Resident Evil personally so these indie horrors aren't for me but it's good to see the genre getting some games on Switch.
I know it would never ever ever EVER happen but a mainline resident evil collection zero to six on Switch would be incredible.
Love first person horror when it's done right. I absolutely loved resident evil 7 biohazard. It gave me the same feel and atmosphere like the first one did when it was first released. This looks like it has potential. I will probably pick this day one.
@JedRock You gave yourself away, you're lying. I truly doubt that you even tried VR.
Looks cool.
@Nincompoop What makes you think he's lying? he just said he didn't find VR experiences scary.
@Nincompoop i wish i WAS lying, but I played Affected on my Samsung VR, and RE7 and the Until Dawn game on the PSVR and, although interesting, it 1st person horror just doesnt do anything for me... over the shoulder works a BIT better, but prefer the old fixed camera angles, or slight camera movement like in RE:CV and Dino Crisis
My bro in law doesnt understand my logic in why 1st person doesnt scare me, but for me, the fear comes in controlling the fate of the character... I dont want to BE the character or see thru their eyes, because if that's the case, the fear of me being harmed (in real life) is taken out.. same reason why i dont find haunted houses or horror movies scary... I'll still GO to them amd enjoy it, they just don't scare me (like a 3rd person horror game would).
@JedRock It's not about 1st or 3rd person, when you are in VR you are inside the game, not looking at a screen. When you said a horror game in 3rd person on a screen is scarier than horror game in VR you are just lying. No one will believe you.
It’s games like this that make me wish Switch had a VR setup.
@Nincompoop I think you're just trolling me at this point. for what reason would I need to lie, or would someone think. was lying about it... I even said in a previous statement that being immersed in the game doesn't make it any more scary to me... same reason why I don't find haunted houses or horror movies scary... unless I'll somehow get hurt or killed in real life from it, the fear (for me) is taken out of the equation. And btw, VR IS 1st person... you're STILL looking at a screen (if even through a headset).
look, just because it doesn't scare me, doesn't mean that I discount it at interesting or fun... it just DOESN'T SCARE ME... would it make YOU feel better if I said it DID scare me? because THEN for sure, I'd be lying
@JedRock Looking at a screen is like looking at a window.
What you're saying is that a monster in front of you is less scary than a monster outside the window?
@Nincompoop why are you so caught uo on what I should find scary or not? And to answer that question, the main factor on my fear isn't based on what I can or can't see, it's whether my actual life is in danger or not. So, if the monster is just there to be there, and not trying to attack or kill me, why would I be scared? So back to the argument of VR, 1st person, or 3rd person... I find 3rd person scary, not because what I see on the screen, but the fear of the fate of the character rests on my hands. But when playing in 1st person or VR, the horror they're trying to convey is to YOU, the player, experiencing it. For me, however, even if I'm "in" the game, the knowledge that I can't ACTUALLY get hurt in real life takes away the fear factor to me.
@Nincompoop if you find VR scary, then good... that means the developers did a successful job in portraying the horror they're trying to convey... To you, 3rd person horror may not be scary to you at all, or it might be AS scary.... to ME, I just feel tha 3rd person is scarier.. that's MY opinion. I don't speak for every person or gamer out there. Heck, some people don't find ANY horror games scary, VR, 1st person, 3rd person. Some people find all 3 to be equally scary... it's all based on how THEY perceive terror and how they choose to react to it. So, to end this, like I said... don't know why you're so caught up on why VR doesnt scare me and that I'm obviously "lying" about it....
"For me, however, even if I'm "in" the game, the knowledge that I can't ACTUALLY get hurt in real life takes away the fear factor to me."
So you think you can get hurt in 3rd person game huh?
@Nincompoop I'm pretty sure I've mentioned multiple times already that in 3rd person, the character's life is in my hands... the fear of THEM getting hurt or dying from my decisions is what scares me. Dude, I know that you're intentionally trolling me at this point. over it
