If you're planning to play any online Switch games over the next nine hours (at the time of publication), then you're out of luck. Nintendo has kicked off a whopping nine hours of maintenance specific to the Switch, which the optimistic among us hope is preparation for something big from E3 and the Spotlight presentation on 13th June.
Below is the maintenance window, which affects online play on the Switch.
North America
From (approx.) June 11th at 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern until June 12 2am Pacific / 5am Eastern.
Europe
From (approx.) 12 June at 1am UK / 2am CEST until 10:00am UK / 11am CEST.
What is Nintendo up to? Hopefully something fun...

Stability.
Stability Ahoy!
Mario is Angry again... XD
virtual console preperation?
Hopefully this is for a huge announcement about virtual console. As much as I enjoy some of these ACA Neo Geo games nothing can beat N's big back catalog.
Must be making it strong and stable.
It's Shigsy tinkering around with a stealth release.
Mario Demo
@Baker1000 May- Day
@HappyMaskedGuy I would love that
Nintendo Switch Fit. Starring Richard Simmons!
Super stability incoming!
@Noonch
Probably maintenance that will be followed a system update so we can watch the Nintendo Spotlight and all the Treehouse streams on the switch.
Just give me that Breath of the Wild DLC...I want that upgraded Master Sword!
The timing is a little curious but it's probably nothing. May just be getting things in order ahead of E3.
Man that stability can't get here fast enough!
Dark Kermit: Awww yeah, VC ahoy! I'm going to be able to finally play Mario Sunshine!
Kermit: Sit down and relax, you know Big N likes their network stable as a mug 😝
They did promise that the capture button would be able to catch video footage as well as screenshots. Maybe they'll roll that out?
Longshot, Virtual Console.
Omg. That's the time! I need to go to bed :/
More likely: Stability and patches for any vulnerabilities exposed in that Nintendo system for hackers.
What I want: Apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Virtual Console.
More than likely a change up to the eshop UI in preparation for things later in the year. Surprises are welcomed though....
At the very least, a web browser, YouTube, and Netflix please
I have no idea, unless they're expecting a lot of online traffic after their presentation...?
Off topic, (tho its prob stability thingys), whatever happened to the sleep aid tech Nintendo was working on and the whole 'qol' (think that was the moniker)? I'm gonna do some research....
You don't need server maintenance to sell VC games on the eShop people. Come on now.
@dok5555555 they already said no VC till 2018 so won't be that.
I think we may see some indie games available for sale soon as E3 direct over.
That really isn't anything to do with server maintenance though
Well if they DID show off a new Metroid game, I'd bet there would be an announcement that Gamecube bc game(S) Metroid Prime/2 is available to download after presentation. For a hefty price of course....
My guess is that it means nothing, but I guess we'll see in a couple of days.
Outside what people have already said here, maybe some new themes coming our way? Maybe a bit more control over the layout of the UI or something...? Who knows! For now I will assume stability!
A big system update? Besides the commonplace wishlist, I hope for HDXC support arriving soon (unless I missed it being added already). Hoping to pick up a sizeable card in July.
Ok, it was a bedside 'Fatigue and sleep tracking device', but since last yr its been put on hold. It just came into my head because its nearly 2am here and I've to be up at 7.30 for doctors lol.
"A new theme was added...
It's gray."
(ツ)/¯
It would be funny if it was for Skyrim switch and VC honestly but who knows I'm busy getting into I am setsuna right now among others still.
Perhaps Nintendo are expecting heavy eShop traffic after the E3 presentation...
Its already been confirmed. Its for the Half Life 3 release.
Meh...Like every says here. It just bug fixes and nothing else. Nintendo won't excite but at least they're consistent.
@BIG45-70 don't joke about that lol Switch exclusive???
@N8tiveT3ch can you supply a source where a simple bug fix for stability took seven hours?
I'm not sure what they're doing since just know I was able to go on the eshop and play online Mario Kart.
Trying not to look too much into it but I can always hope for streaming services.
I understand when Nintendo says that the Switch is a video game machine first and foremost, but I can't deny that I utilized Netflix and Amazon Instant Video on the Wii U rather frequently.
@Zimon : And it'll cost $3 for the privilege.
@kobashi100 - Nobody said no VC till 2018. You are misinformed.
So far Nintendo is in luck, as neither EA nor Microsoft really had a compelling pitch beyond "look the best Fifa ever" and "look the best Forza ever" respectively.
Mother 3 for Switch confirmed?
/ducks tomatoes
hope they have something neat. maybe even some freebie E3 demos
Hope for more themes or something cool like that, but most likely just making it stable
Maybe this is related to the CS:GO rumor.
Keep moving folks, nothing to see just some Stability on the Horizon.
I predict it will be themes and maybe a new look UI.
Hopefully they are making thier online services...you know, work.
@invictus4000 Thats the most plausible reason for the update.
It could be in preparation for some sort of 'Nindies @ E3' thing like they did on Wii U a few years back, where we got to sample games from E3 at home. That was cool.
I'm glad that Paper Mario maintenance image is still relevant
Good ol' Paper Mario back with the stability articles!
My prediction is some indie game demos...
I am excited for this hopefully a surprise download after spotlight
@Noonch
When can I pre order?
@kobashi100
When did they announce no VC until 2018?
@Captain_Gonru
Yes, you are correct.
9 hour online shut down? Guess the lite version of their Switch Online mobile app is going to launch soon.
Saw Reggie on Youtube@E3 apparently there's "news" during the first hour of treehouse
Thanks for the warning, finally got some MK8D time too!
But fingers crossed for something big?
We're getting a couple of surprise releases aren't we...
9 hours of stability
or 9 hours of Metroid
Who knows??
Server prep for Arms surely?
Anyone else not get a server outage? My lady has been playing MK8 for hours now, and it's only a few more hours until the end of 'maintenance' . I guess they were just warning of potential down time.
Nintendo always wanting to be stable. The stability is just too stable though. Lol. 😂
Give us themes and badges Nintendo!!!!
VC as well and Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll, Amazon Instant Video and many others too please Nintendo.
@Ralek85 hmm i dunno, sea of thieves looked amazing to me , imagine that on the switch....damn.
I predict nothing. It will be nothing. No YouTube, no VC.. nothing. Maybe some stability but that's it.
Maybe they just have to fix some things they have sorted out after the Test Punch ahead of the Arms release this week. Guess it's nothing E3 related.
I see everyone saying oh its just stability. Somethings going down. A day before their conference. Yea man this aint just some standard stability. Peeps be saying that to not get ahead of themselves. But a day before e3 cmon yall lol. Something big coming. Or maybe a few big things.
Hnnngh!
Probably a new function that allow us to change the taste of the game cartridges 🤣😉😀
Probably fixing the credit card issues on eshop, stability and maybe, hopefully something regarding... Themes? Please?
They had to Switch off the servers for 11 hours? NOOOOOO!
I'm going with vc , nindies demo and a few surprises ready for launch after spotlight is over
Worms WMD for Switch would be nice, since it's already out on SHIELD.
While there is the remote possibility that it's just a coincidence, it seems likely that they will be releasing something during E3.
VC would probably be the best outcome, although they did do Nindies demos last year, so they could do the same again.
It could also just be the introduction of another feature that we're expecting... a web browser, the companion app, video capture/sharing... that sort of thing.
There's also the possibility that they could start to bring free-to-play games to the Switch.
Nintendo's main market is and will always be Japan.
Anyone thinking they would surprise announce something huge as VC for Switch at E3 is delusional.
The last years all major announcements happened via Nintendo Direct's and so far I have not seen any indication of Nintendo doing otherwise.
Unless Reggie has flown to Japan and has been kissing the Bobo's feet there for the last couple months begging them....LOL! /sarcasm
We have seen major online maintenances before with Nintendo, without introducing anything. So it's most likely a coincidence or at most preparation for Demo's on E3. That's it.
Paid Online services for Switch has been posponed till 2018 and I am 100% sure it's because of Virtual Console.
Everything we have seen so far points to the obvious! Switch console has been rushed to market and obviously a lot of features is just not ready. Web browser, Apps and the most prominent one.... Virtual Console.
My prediction has been that they will announce the Zelda DLC as being available after the conference. But this gets my hopes up for something else.
(So it's probably routine maintenence)
I dunno know about you guys, but Mario Kart 8 Deluxe played fine online all night. Maybe it was nothing.
Please bring VC!!!
Please bring VC!!!
Please bring VC!!!
That's a hell of a lot of stability.
I was trying to write some clever comment about Switch's coming to life and commencing global conquest only to realise its a few years too early but not in the right mindset for it.
So lets just say Nintendo is clearing all the questionable material some of their employees have been hiding in the severs.
Pornhub is mad that their traffic has been way down since the release of the Switch so they have partnered with Nintendo to bring the first streaming app to the Switch.
The servers are just being prepped for the onslaught of activity
@llamareborn "so we can watch the Nintendo Spotlight and all the Treehouse streams on the switch."
I watched the EA stream on my Wii U on the TV. I watched the MS stream on my Xbox b/c they offered us free stuff if we watched it on Mixer. I'll watch Ubisoft on my PC monitor b/c it's during lunch and it's Ubi. I'll watch the Sony stream on my Wii U on my TV tonight. I'll watch the Spotlight on my Wii U on my TV tomorrow. I'll watch the Treehouse on my PC.
As of this moment nobody will be watching anything on their Switch so I hope you're right.
@Powerballad Better not to imagine it, since it's never going to happen. Remember that Microsoft bought Rare, since Nintendo couldn't be bothered to do it. What of it looked amazing to you though?
I mean, I loved the water and weather effects, but even those felt at least as impressive in AC Blackflag. And the actual combat, incl. gunplay, swordplay and seacombat just looked mega simplistic to me. Felt more like a social hub to me, than a real game. I mean I love pirates, but what are we actually going to do in the game?
@Ralek85 yeah i get your point about the weather effects being on par with ac black flag, i guess i just enjoyed the thought of laughing at friends fails at boarding ships by canon shot etc. Simple things
I hope is VC, e-shop new look, OS new features. But since is Nintendo it must likely will be amazing stability.
@Powerballad Yeah, that was friggin cool, but I have to say, that was really the only point in the trailer that had me cheering, and I imagine that this will grow old after a dozen or so times as well.
I just had hoped for more actual meat on that bone, so to speak. I like the cute look, but it seems the mechanics were also build to be 'accessible' to every type of gamer of every age. That may be a good thing in some way, but I'm just not convinced yet, that I won't grow bored of what seems like rather shallow actual play incredibly fast.
It's one of those games I love the idea of, but then I see them played and I'm just left with the feeling of wanting something more substanial. Maybe I'm wrong though, maybe there is a bunch of mechanics that were not shown, but as far as fighting sea battles cooperatively with friends, this seemed TOO whimsical for me, equally, I really hope there is more to the combat than what we've seen.
I don't need a super complex systems with hundreds of combos and screen-filling skill trees, but ... well, something other than "slash" "block" "slash"
@Noonch oh my.... You know I would not doubt Nintendo would do something like this LOL.
@Ralek85 Agreed, it does raise a concern that they've been building the game for what feels like ages and didnt display any deeper mechanics to keep people farming away post launch etc.
I will be buying it for my xbone as its literally collecting dust , as im getting older (26) im enjoying fun, un serious games so much more. If thats making me more open to gambling on cartoonish games im okay with that to be honest , not that you asked lol but im fatigued with all the 'serious' games of the last few years.
P.s a button mash mechanic to reload a musket would be amazing, like poking the lead shot down in the barrel, that would make for some funny as hell 1 on 1 standoffs.
@Powerballad Oh I totally get that sense of fatigue, I feel the same way really. There are still "serious" games I enjoy - things like Bloodborne for example thanks to it's excellent all-around design, atmosphere as well as art direction - but generally, I find myself incredibly bored with the 'mainstream' of X1 and PS4 gaming.
Honestly, I see something like "Anthem" yesterday, and it actually makes me feel empty inside watching it - as weird as that may sound. I don't know, but many of these games feel like someone sucked the soul, the essential sense of joy and wonder right out of them, but couldn't really be bothered to replace that with anything but bluster and - admittedly - stunning, but still inherently superficial visuals.
I absolutely loved stuff like Life is Strange and Invisible Inc. though, for different reasons, but both were highly enjoyable games to play. I never felt obligated to be amazed by them for virtues other than the joy the narrative and mechanics respectively inspired.
It's actually the main reason I really want the Switch to succeed despite the issues I have with many of Nintendo's policies. Nintendo actually seems to care still, about how a game plays - and yes, I know that sounds corny and cliched, but having seen all these conferences so far, I noticed once more that basically none of the trailers were actually focused on mechanics of any sort. It's all about this mode and that mode, and 4K and HDR, and sharing and open-world, and cinematic, and immersive and yadada.
Still, having ranted thusly, I still hope to see some cool games from Sony. I'm excited for that Spiderman game for example (I love Spidey^^), as I really enjoyed the original Infamous games and Arkham Asylum (City and Knight as well as Second Son ... not so much though).
Tomorrow my Switch will arrive and I'm looking forward to trying Arms come Friday. I'm just glad there are still games build around having a fun time, without that incessant need to AWE people at all cost.
As for Xbox, Crackdown 1 was really fun, I'm hoping Crackdown 3 can live up to that once more, so I'm looking forward to that. Ashen and Cuphead also look enjoyable, plus that Dwarf game might be fun in coop, and bringing Xbox original games to the X1 is fantastic. I'd love to play some more Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future.
So yeah, I'm still totally willing to fall in love with Rare's take on pirates, I'm just not feeling it yet - certainly not as much as I hope I would at this point.
Btw, if you like I can leave my XBL ID, maybe we can hunt some treasure together at some point then
Absolutely agree with you on your take on Bloodborne , that game was special.
And as for Anthem, well, oddly i agree lol. That first scene looked very bioware with the npc issuing the mission which got me abit hyped , in a how big is this sanctuary city, i hope its properly explorable etc and then it spawned into the open world and i was instantly scepticle. It looked beautiful , and oddly , that worried me , it gave me a mass effect / destiny / division crossover vibe.
Now that of itself sounds promising, but for a company like bioware that is where it is due to its ability to craft a story, that reveal trailer seemed very, very light on dialogue i could sink my teeth into.
The world will undoubtedly look incredible , but if its worrying more about making me go oooo, aaaah than giving me a memorable experience then me and bioware have a problem lol. I have seen countless beautiful games, all vying to be the shiniest on the block, im fully ready for someone to WOW me with substance.
Congrats on your switch purchase, im sure you'll thoroughly enjoy it, it is my favourite system this gen by a long way, and i believe its achieved that while still being in a 'beta' phase.
Im hoping beyond hope that Nintendo come out with a metaphorical 21 gun salute and really deliver some excellent titles as im pretty sure they have a game changer both for them and the industry with the switch.
Microsoft went HARD this e3 and a ton of their stuff was indie titles, which shows you that it is possible to deliver compelling gaming without relying on AAA multimillion development.
Yeah i have steam, ps network , Xblive and nintendo (friendcode?) If your keen for a laugh.
Currently battering MK8D.
Also , how amazing did the new Ori game look !
@Jeronan Um... even though E3 may be an American event, it still gets worldwide coverage and worldwide announcements ARE regularly made there. Also, launches of eShop content worldwide already has a history of going up during past E3s. Chances are indeed quite decent that the free version of the online service (which by all indications appears to be the Switch's replacement for the VC). If you're expecting a continuation of the lineup of downloadable emulated games, playable offline as the VC titles on previous systems, you're likely in for a disappointment. The very fact that NeoGeo games are already on the eShop without the "Virtual Console" label is a pretty clear confirmation that Nintendo isn't going that route for Switch. The online service IS the new VC-- based on everything we know, there's no reason to think otherwise.
spaltoon 2, arms, pokemon
would they need good online for nintendo to have decent running at its E3 tournaments???,
will people playing at these events be using their own switch???
reason for 9 hours???
@thatawesomedude Dude seriously...ffs.
NeoGeo isn't Nintendo Virtual Console. You can't compare.
Downloadable Nintendo Virtual Console titles is going to be a monthly perk of the "Paid" Online service!
@Masurao thanks, good to hear. I just thought I read somewhere that particular HDXC support would come with a later system update rather than at launch, but perhaps my memory just trolls me.
@Jeronan NeoGeo IS part of Virtual Console on the Wii Shop... If they planned to continue VC on Switch, why would NeoGeo games suddenly no longer count? And no, that monthly game idea was ultimately dropped (look it up). The final version will be multi-games online only... And even when the monthly game idea was still planned, Nintendo specifically avoided the using the term "Virtual Console", instead calling them "classics" exactly the same word they're using now to describe the games on the online service. Definitely not a coincidence. It's a pretty safe bet they specifically decided to ditch the old "Virtual Console" model for Switch, probably to avoid the issues that would arise from people already owning them on 3DS, Wii, and/or Wii U.
This will be for the new Metroid game which is free on the eshop as long as you own at least one copy of Zelda.
Lots of games on the Eshop, and maybe smashbros related?
on the Aus eshop Nintendo has added Mario and Rabbids to the coming soon section!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soooo... nothing?
