Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water - called Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water in Europe - is a hugely promising upcoming arrival that should be perfect for Halloween, even if most fans (outside of eager pre-order shoppers in Europe) will be limited to downloading the title. While it's not getting the full retail release its advocates may demand, it's a welcome localisation to bring some horror to the Wii U.
It's not shy of being slightly silly, either, with Nintendo of Europe now confirming alternative costumes that will be unlockable in the game. Yes, Miu and Yuri can dress up as Princess Zelda and Zero Suit Samus.
What a time to be alive.

Ha! This is awesome. Can not wait for this game!
...Weird. I have nothing more to say...
its awesome but it will make thimgs less scray i think because the zelda suit looks funny.
I love the costumes are Koei related. That's clearly Zelda's Hyrule Warriors costume and obviously Samus has popped up a few times with Koei with Other M and the ZS appearing in one of their Warrior 3ds games
INB4 they replace the lingerie underwear outfits from the JP version.
Well that won't break the atmosphere or anything
This might make it bearable to those of us who suck with horror.
Lool, so random, but still, awesome.
This game is like a year old, how is that news? Or are these added specifically to the Western versions?
I thought this was horror. Not fetish Cosplay. Fatal Frame, not Senran Kagura.
Awesome! I pre-ordered the special edition a few days ago, and now, I know I'll be playing in style!
@Zelkardaim ....me thinks he likes Robot Dogs a bit too much.
Lol! Zero suit is hot! and I say that as a gay guy!
Damn I can't wait for this game!
@manu0 I think these are new costumes. The Japanese version had some bikini ones.
Gotta love those Nintendo costumes like they did with Bayonetta and Monster Hunter and now this. I'll definitely be using the Zero Suit Samus outfit.
This is awesome but it still bothers me that NOA will not do a physical release after all this Nintendo love to Fatal Frame...i will wait patiently and hope for a physical release until then i will enjoy my backlog
@WanderingPB
I've said this a lot to people who have said the same thing. If you really want the series to continue in NA, you need to just buy it on the eshop. Obviously NoA is skeptical. If it doesn't sell well, then I doubt we'll get another opportunity, at all. If you are going to wait for a physical release of this, you'll be waiting a mighty long time, probably forever.
If hard drive space is the issue here, well then, no, I can't blame you for wanting a physical disc.
A neat idea, but... why? This kind of cameo stuff really doesn't fit in a horror game, since the obvious visual dissonance takes a lot of atmosphere and throws it out of the window. Of course, it's up to the player to use these costumes in the first place, but I'm having a hard time taking a horror game seriously that offers this nonsense to begin with...
I mean, it couldn't have been that hard to pick more believable cameo costumes, right (nods towards Mario-as-an-animé-girl fanart)? Hell, even a few amiibo figures scattered around the mansion as collectibles (and just for an extra laugh, a random few could always be unobtainable as a punch at the state of the amiibo market) would've been a funny nod that doesn't detract from the overall atmosphere.
EDIT: Aaaand I realized it's the Other M Zero Suit. All of my NOPE!
I would have liked the Luigi suit of FF4 better, those feel really out of place.
@Lilith93: you'll unlock those costumes after having beaten the game. Fatal Frame has an action element that increases replay value, replaying the game with costumes is a way to put a fresh spin on another run.
Loool @ seeing a Princess Zelda outfit in a horror game.. Not as ridiculous as the duct tape outfit, but still...
It's a bit sad the Nintendo has to put Nintendo costumes in this game to have more people interested in it, instead of releasing a physical version in America and better marketing. I don't mind because they are just extras, it's fine, I've already seen Mario, Luigi and bunny costumes in the series before... Anyway, the only thing that you should care about is getting this great game!
I freaking knew it. In fact, I called this months ago.
Nintendo is going to foist this crap on the west in a misguided attempt to compensate for their demanding the lingerie costumes be cut. Puritan Bill and PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN committee at Nintendo of America strike yet again.
A little too much crack on Zero Suit, but the costumes look great.
Well, they gotta sell the game somehow...
is ayane still going to be in the game or are they replacing her with this for the western version?
I have to say, this is the first game I've wanted on the Wii-U.. Actually, it's the first Nintendo game I've wanted since the 90's lol..
No, not cuz of the sexy outfit there.. But because I loved the first one on ps2 even though it felt like I was the only person in the world playing it..
Ghosts freak me out, man!
Nothing but disappointment if they replace the swimsuits. Too much cowardice because they're under 18. I mean, I can understand since even virtual it's illegal in some European countries/Australia but it's not illegal in North America so I hope they're not too scared. If they're just going to port it from the UK version, I understand. Not really cowardice but I probably won't buy it.
Dat Samus ass.
Wish they'd given her Samus' hair style also, but ah well.
@Simbabbad
ah ok...thats actually a nice idea.
quistion:can you choose to replay chapters you already played or do you have to replay the entire game to get the difrent endings???
This is a nice bonus. I'm more of a zelda fan tbh but this zero suit looks way better than the zelda suit.
Wow, why is it now I'm suddenly more interested in the game than I was before. Reminds me of Hyrule Warriors, I wouldn't have purchased the game if it wasn't for having Zelda characters in.
That zero suit is not out-of-place at all... Yeah, I will probably see how they look but will definitely be playing with the less ridiculous outfits on.
As optional costumes go... damn. (; 'A') Not quite as cool as the Nintendo themed Bayonetta costumes, but what could be? Not going to use on my first playthrough, but for messing about in? Hell yes.
@FierceRagnar
That is some serious buttcrack. Maybe more emphasis on the cleavage next time
Thats the way to appeal to the system holders !
Id play regardless but thats whats up ~
Got to admit she's pretty attractive
@Fee Really? Because bikini outfits are being replaced? You are playing fatal frame for the wrong reasons if that's your deciding factor on getting the game or not.
As for others complaining about "digital only". We never got FF4 or FF2 Wii edition. I'm just grateful for finally getting a game localized, here in the states, in any shape or form (without Homebrew assistance).
Whenever I see her in that Zero Suit Samus outfit of hers, and see that particular enviroment she's in, it makes me think of a really, really, REALLY gritty, dark, and mysterious version of Metroid.
My game of the year (not becomes of these outfits though, but they are a nice addition).
It is a cute little easter egg. I like the zelda dress the best. However I likely won't use them...
@MoonKnight7 I completely understand your sentiment and agree whole-heartedly but the reason for me not getting day 1 is unfortunately hard drive space...plus i personally prefer physical copies as it soothes my psychological delusion of actually owning my games...especially since it seems that we are moving towards an all digital future...but like i said before it just means its not Day 1 for me but eventually i will get it but you do bring up good points my friend
@WanderingPB
Yeah, that's why I threw that point in there at the end. I know it may not be easy for people to buy a good external hard drive. It certainly took me a long time to finally get one.
@DiscoGentleman
Amen.
Unless hard drive space is the issue here, people just need to get over it and buy it if they want to see the series localized again. Being strictly on the eshop tells me that NoA is very skeptical. If it doesn't sell well this time, I don't think we'll have the pleasure of another one.
Regarding the costumes, yeah, I agree, people complain about anything these days. Even optional things! Crazy...
@hcfwesker maybe its time you asked yourself what it is you want to support with your money.
Do you want to support censorship?
Do you want to support corporations deciding for you what you can and cannot see?
Do you want to support region locking and the brain dead committee thinking that created and enables it?
Stop being "grateful" a game was translated for you and start demanding better.
@hcfwesker I've never played Fatal Frame before. I'm not invested in the series so I have no reason to support its localization if they're gonna shaft me. Now let me be real. The bikinis make me more interested but the removal of the bikinis makes me much less interested than I'd be if they never existed in the first place. It's cowardice I can't stand.
Still a better Samus than Other M Samus.
unlockable in the game
Unlockable? Aww. Horror games are usually not my thing but I might have been willing to give it a go for the silliness or running around in completely out of place Zelda and ZSS costumes.
These costumes are optional so why the concern about losing the immersion in the game? And if sexualization of women in media offends you then you may want to live on an island because that is everywhere. This game is a day 1 purchase for me. The costumes are a cool bonus.
@KO-Cub Way to make mountains out of molehills, bub. Nukes out of flashbangs.
I just bought Bayonetta 1&2 for my brother's birthday yesterday, and we were just admiring the Nintendo costumes today, and now ANOTHER game is getting the same treatment? I hope they add more. I feel like the main character here could wear Link's costume almost as well as Bayonetta does.
Thats awesome!
@Ryu_Niiyama I'd use them on a second playthrough, for the LOLs, but my first? Nah, I'd rather go vanilla (for the immersion).
all i can say other then this is wow.
dayyaaam looka dat a..... lol
Where's Birthday Suit Samus?
For people living in NA. Fatal Frame series has newer sold that well because piracy and used games sales. Having Fatal Frame 5 as download only is pretty much only way to see if people actually want to pay to play games likes this in Nintendo platform. If you want to see another Fatal Frame games in NA at future then just buy digital version if you enjoy "demo" and want to see more.
this game
will be great
Anyone know how much space this game will take up?
It's too weird. Kind of fun, but weird...
@amiiboacid
Please don't quote me, but I did look at this yesterday, and I think it was around 11 GB.
@Fee ...The removal of bikinis makes you less interested? That's very brave of you to admit. Personally I sit up and take notice when bikinis are removed
@KO-Cub "Fetish cosplay" are you mentally handicapped or naw
@Technosphile @Technosphile We don't even know if they're replace and even then, not buying the game won't make Nintendo realise "hey we should stop censoring crap" it'll make them realise "this series sells like hot garbage". I've never understold the speak/vote with you wallet thing, it just doesn't make sense.
@Zombo begging for scraps and having your intelligence insulted just doesn't make sense, either. So what if Nintendo doesn't localize any more of these games? If they censor "adult content"--which, by the way, is ridiculous in this context--in a game clearly meant for adults, why would you want any more of that, anyway? Go play any of the three (four?) Fatal Frame games on PSN if you're that desperate to play one. Or import the uncut version somehow, though in another brilliant move Nintendo makes that difficult these days.
If the game bombs then Nintendo is free to interpret why in any way they choose; but one look on any forum could clue them in. This is a niche game and if you're going to appease its niche audience, don't jerk with the product too much or you'll find we will be happy to have made Nintendo waste their time and money.
@MajinCubyan
Gotta beat the game in less than 20 minutes after hitting the third tree in the second stage 50 times with an unbreakable deku stick, which you get by beating the first boss in 3 minutes without getting hit and never jumping. Of course after you soft reset your game 3 three times and enter the Konami code backwards on the title screen.
@Miiamoto Oh XD. That took me a few minutes...to be honest it depends. Sometimes bikinis can be better than full disclosure.
A nice little extra. After number 4 was restricted to a Japan, I'm glad this one got localised for us. Project Zero is such an underrated horror series. Time to buy some spare trousers.
@Technosphile I'm sorry, I don't play video games for digitized fetishes. Bikini, ALTERNATE costumes, are not going to offend me if they're removed ... and I like the newly added unlockable costume choices much better than generic bikini wear. You and I, sir, have different opinions on this matter. Deal with it.
Zero suite actually works here. It's almost like a resident evil outfit and that's a survival horror game too so that works.
Wow for once including the Zero Suit in this game actually makes much sense now, I mean c'mon the Fatal Frame game series is called Project Zero so it makes sense to have a Zero Suit.
So stoked for this. I bought my ps2 back in the day for fatal frame, metal gear and a couple of other titles. So this is my Halloween! Love the Zelda costume
@Technosphile Well, I very lightly researched this so I could be wrong, but in the UK they have no choice because the girls are underaged and it would be illegal even though they're not real girls. It's not their fault it's the government. What's worse? It's also illegal in Canada, and Canada gets the same version as the US...so they could just give the US a different version, but there's not enough incentive for them to bother. So...while I agree with you and this makes me less likely to buy...it's not really their fault. The censorship is imposed not only by Nintendo but by multiple governments. I know others have gotten away with it, but I can't really blame them for blocking it, even though I don't like it.
@Sampras Yeah, it's kind of like Jill's wetsuit in Revelations.
@Fee so change their ages in dialogue. That's what they do with every localization of Senran Kagura. All that's being changed there is a number and a couple lines of dialogue, definitely preferable (and less work) than cutting the buttcrack costumes.
@Technosphile Well really they just eliminate age references altogether,(at least I never saw any) but I don't really like that approach. It is preferable to censorship though. It's also pretty obvious the Senran Kagura girls are still high-school age and they get away with it so, yeah. I still don't really blame them but I do agree that your idea is a lot better than what they did.
I hope no one buys this now because Nintendo is stupid. It would be nice if for once we didn't have other Nintendo franchises shoved down our throats. Nintendo is like the Star Wars of video games, they just keep rehashing their same stupid characters thinking people will buy into it.
Before people freak out and fanboy/girl on me. I love the Zelda and Metroid franchises, I am just sick of being treated like a kid and having things decided for me. Especially when those things don't even fit within the game. Running around as a Zelda wannabe doesn't exactly make me feel scared.
