If the "select a mode" screen, doesn't allow you to play on the Mario mode, and you can only play on the Mario & Luigi mode. It is because Mario has 0 lives. To fix you just need to
-Start a game with the Mario & Luigi mode selected.
-Move around the world map until you are on the space with the red M. (Either the first space of the world or the last level Mario played)
-Press the B button on your controller or handheld to swap lives between Mario and Luigi.
-You can give all of Mario's lives to Luigi if you want to play exclusively as Luigi.
If your wondering why I mentioned this is because Google search AI keeps pulling a Nintendo Life forum post that says it's impossible to change modes. I'm hoping this post will correct that.
