@kkslider5552000

I used to be a wrestling fan up until about 2017 or 2018 & I got to the point I just stopped watching it & never looked back mainly because I felt like they took it from being fun to just to dark after a while in comedy. I started watching it originally with my dad in the early 90's back when it was NWO & WWF. I miss the NWO days personally when Stone Cold Steve Austin came out in the army truck smashing beer cans in the air. Great memories~ 🤣 How does the game relate to being Christian unless your talking about the wrestler named Christian which is not the same thing but I think I got the joke. 🤦‍♀️

Happy Gaming! (^_^)

@VoidofLight Barbiegurl777 is definitely missing out, but I wouldn't take offense. Unless... she reprises this matter at a latter date to advocate for Persona.

Dragon Quest is mostly fine, but there's definitely some skimpiness and weirdness in certain games. There's usually a casino with bunny girls (still not sure why). Dragon Quest 8 is probably the most egregious (not on Switch, but its on 3ds). 11 is mostly fine, one of the girls gets cursed to wear the aforementioned bunny suit and the boss of that chapter ogles her, but pretty darn tame (especially cuz you immediately beat them up).

While I agree that they're mostly Catholic, the God/Goddess (depends on the game) can be a bit Japanese folklore where the God can "lose", Dragon Quest plays with this idea. So it's less Abrahamic omnipotent God, but the virtues and priesthood is definitely a thing throughout the series.
Not on Switch, but Dragon Quest 5 is a masterpiece, and definitely my favorite of the series.

@CANOEberry Its just funny because if it is "I don't do SMT because it has demons in it," Shin Megami Tensei unironically is the most accurate media depiction of biblical figures, along with the abrahamic religions. It's the closest you'll get to things being based off of the original texts lol. You can't exactly say the games are demonic when they're as close as they are.

Like for example, the way that Satan is portrayed is far more accurate to the actual figure in both Judaism and Christianity than it is to the version of Satan from Paradise Lost and Dante's Inferno (which are the two works that popularized the idea of hell and the idea of Lucifer along with his fall from grace. Works that aren't exactly biblical canon or even related to the actual scripture. Effectively just biblical fanfiction). That isn't to say Lucifer isn't in SMT, because he also is- but it explains why Lucifer exists as an entirely different thing to Satan.

But yeah, if Binding of Isaac is a no-go, Shin Megami Tensei and Persona probably are as well, given that even though there's pretty much literal biblical scholars working on SMT, it goes against the popular beliefs in Christianity (the ones that miss the entire point of the written word and interpret it in a way that lacks all context behind it or around it).

@DuckInAPond All forms of Christianity are the same to me. Whatever minor differences they have, they all tend to ignore most of the context around scripture and negotiate with the text. I grew up as Catholic (forced into religion from a young age), and I knew multiple different Catholics that held multiple different viewpoints on the scripture depending on the area which they were from. Same goes for Baptists, Evangelicals, etc. Whenever the book becomes inconvenient for them, they negotiate that away. Whenever it doesn't fit the world view they were instilled with, they find ways to make it fit. The books of the bible contradict themselves as is, and so everyone has their own take or idea about what the books end up meaning in the end. Most of which end up ignoring the historical context, or the circumstances around which was found where, or when what was written.

For example, some people think that the Book of Revelations is an actual doomsday prophecy, and that the entire book details events that have yet to happen. However it isn't. Historically the book of Revelation was written around the time that Christians were persecuted by the Roman empire, and everything it details is a message against the Roman empire, and how believers were meant to live in order to avoid that persecution. It takes the form of apocalyptic literature, but it is not meant to be a literal prophecy, nor does it actually pertain to anything revolving around the time which we currently live- outside of just detailing the general downfall of society and the birth of a new world within the absence of that society.

The inherent issue is just that no matter the sect, there's always going to be something in the Bible that is negotiated or ignored. People will use the bible to uphold reasons for why gay people shouldn't exist by using the Old Testament (and a poorly translated verse at that), but then ignore things like how the bible tells one that they shouldn't wear mixed fibers in their clothing, or that they shouldn't eat shellfish by saying "well, that's the old covenant, not the new one!" It's all arbitrarily hand-picked, and it's somewhat by design.

"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."

I am not religious but I love media that incorporates religious themes and or imagery, especially video games because of the ways symbols can both be used in the most accurate fashion possible, yet can be given new meaning. For example, I found it so funny to find out that all the crosses and biblical depictions of Angels in Neon Genesis Evangelion were just put in there because they looked cool, yet they make perfect sense in the context of the narrative. I also love the way JRPGs in particular speak out against the dangers of (fictional) organised religion from a power point of view while some also depict instances of it being a positive force in people’s lives.

People have mentioned SMT and Persona, which offer more nuanced and accurate depictions of real world religion and mythology than most other “Christian or Catholic games”, and Dragon Quest, which incorporates Catholic elements in a pretty tasteful way buy and large. I’d also offer up the three mainline Xenoblade Chronicles games, because religious symbolism and such are depicted in a way that if you’re looking for it, it’s there, and if you’re not looking for it, it’s not there.

@CANOEberry

No. Games I don't play & don't think I ever will:

Final Fantasy
Zelda
Dragon Quest
Persona

It's nothing personal against the games so much as I looked into the gameplay & storylines & just not into it. Zelda I did try years ago when I was little in the early 90's when the original NES came out. We got a Zelda game as a rental from blockbusters. I remember wanting to try the game then after a hour I ended up hating it & it was quickly taken back to blockbusters. As for final fantasy the only thing I really know about it it gets into magic & crap. My older step sister before she passed loved it & had all the final fantasy games years ago. I never played Persona so really couldn't judge it one way verses another. Saw a few videos of it on YouTube gameplay videos not my cup of tea.

As for the bunny girls being in Dragon Quest. I think I might be able to answer that. The same people who made & designed Dragon Ball / Z also made & designed Dragon Quest If anyone remember Bulma from Dragon Ball she wore a bunny costume thinking in Dragon Quest it's thrown in as a comedy skit or throw back to Dragon Ball. Also in Japanese culture dragons have been a big thing for thousands of years in there culture so it makes sense to have dragons in games. 🤷‍♀️

@VoidOfLight

Ahh my dad was Christian & my biological mom was Catholic. When they were still married before the divorce my dad was trying to raise me Christian & my grandparents on my biological side when they babysat me took me to mass 7 days a week for a while. I love worshipping God so for me it didn't matter if I was in a Christian or catholic church I will give praise & honor to God regardless of what church I am in. When I was at my grandparents house one day & my dad came to pick me up he over heard my grandparents saying they thought I was close to converting to the Catholic religion~ 🤷‍♀️🤣 I had nothing against either religion one way verses another. My dad didn't either but didn't want me being converted at the same time as well. My grandparents one day when babysitting me when I was a baby had me baptized in the Catholic church. They took pictures my dad was not thrilled to say the least was later baptized in the Christian church as a teenager but accepted God into my heart when I was 5 eons ago in the early 90's.

@VoidofLight You've got me curious. I've only played a bit of the demo of SMT V and thought it was pretty good but I'm generally not a fan of Pokemon-esque creature/demon/whatever collecting gameplay. But as a pastor with Ph.D. work in Biblical Studies, I'm wondering what you are talking about in this forum. Like, you've mentioned the portrayal of Satan, but there is remarkably little in the Bible actually describing him to say the game is accurate to the Bible. If there is a link or something you know about talking about all of this so we don't have to derail this thread with long exposition that would be fine, but I must admit the concept of partnering with demons has also put me off of the series so I'm interested in the things you are mentioning here and what the game actually contains.

For me even I prefer girlie games like Barbie, Cooking Mama, Imagine / My Universe games, etc, but I still can handle some Final Fantasy games such as FF 8, FF 9, FF 10 & 10-2, FF 12, FF 13. They are still tame enough for rated Teen games and you are already grown up same like me. I can handle very pageant story like Barbie until very scandalous false religion narrative like FF 10.
And of course, RPG games will always have battle system either Turn Based or Real time or Action based like Kingdom Hearts.
If you have issue with them because of their storyline or gameplay or character design, I will say thru are still tame enough for you.
I also have no interest with Dragon Quest games long time age, but after I played Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2 and Dragon Quest Heroes 1, I slowly have curiosity for other Dragon Quest games that I have never played before.
I personally not a big fan of Akira Toriyama art style from Dragon Ball, but there are some other characters from Dragon Quest games have more appeal design for me after I played certain Dragon Quest games. It grew slowly my interest from curiosity.
You can try cute looking RPG games like Fantasy Life I or Chocobo Mystery Dungeon or Dragon Quest Builders games so you will get used with their new looking for you before you get into more serious games like FF 8 until 13 or main Dragon Quest games.
Also, listening the story about false religion with oppression and lies then the heroes figured it out if they were living in lies, for me it was very interesting plot twist.
Btw, back to topic, what are you looking from Christian games?
The Jesus ? the Bible story? Or any Biblical moments?

How has no one mentioned Christian Kirbo??

Jokes aside, that’s actually an interesting idea looking for Christian games, I’m Christian too and I think that’s a great idea. Maybe I’ll have to try some of these suggestions!
I guess technically any game can be Christian depending how you look at it-

Games that are actually biblically based for the Nintendo switch are:

Adam Venture Origins
Jesus Simulator
Parables Of Jesus
Synaxarion: Acts Part 1 (getting when goes on sale later)

I can say the top 3 with certainty because have played them on my switch there accurate to God's word. As for some of the other games mentioned in this thread who knows~ 🤷‍♀️

@Anti-Matter

I get it your saying you can play Barbie or final fantasy & enjoy both. I get it. 🤷‍♀️✌️ I did try final fantasy as a rental years ago to try it but I usually know pretty quickly if I like or dislike or a game. Akira Toriyama isn't for everybody I love Dr. Slump with Arale Chan & Dragon Ball with Goku there characters make me laugh. When they started doing sequel after sequel of of dragon ball though I did feel like they were milking it after a while... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Dragon Ball & Z are great after that it's kinda mehh... 🤦‍♀️ Ohhh to answer your question ones that directly depict the Bible like tell stories / parables of Noah's ark, Cain & Able, Revelations etc Sort of like the Bible game for PS2 talking directly about the Bible. 🤷‍♀️ The closest I found was the Jesus Simulator game ironically. It's weird they haven't put super Noah's 3D ark SNES on virtual console on the switch since it is a SNES game unless there only doing 1st party games for virtual console. 🤷‍♀️

@Barbiegurl777 They do have 3rd party games on the Switch NSO, but Super Noah's Ark seems a long shot. It was unlicensed. The developer never got permission to make it or release it for the SNES. While legal, it meant it could only really be sold in Christian bookshops. Most stores had agreements with Nintendo that meant they could never sell a game that had been made without Nintendo's permission. Though, I guess they could finally release it properly with their permission if they did come to agreement for NSO. 😆

This is a good topic anyway. 👍

@Mana_Knight

Your right. 🤷‍♀️ That is where my dad got several Christian video games but it never dawned on me as a kid only Christian book stores could sell these types of games. I went in with my dad to look around & usually found the games. To my credit before knowing this as a kid back then I thought at the time they were sold everywhere just like other games but it does make sense. I can't go to Christian book stores anymore mainly because they all closed down in the area I live yet ironically I will be out in public seeing people wearing Christian tshirts guessing they got online or homemade because the stores aren't around anymore at least not here. 🤷‍♀️

Here is where I have a question for you, and it's one I would pose to other religious people as well, not Christians only.

I believe you are describing games that are squarely and solely about Christianity, that focus explicitly on defined beliefs. Yet that cannot be all that is out there, surely?

Despite becoming a mass market franchise which has suffered various degrees of mishandling, Lord of the Rings is pretty Christian, as Tolkien himself would have told you. It doesn't wear its religion and philosophy on its sleeve, but the themes are strong and consistent throughout the book (and I suppose you could mention C.S. Lewis here as well). If you're focused solely on literature that self-identifies (and self-markets) as Christian, though, you could easily miss that.

I can't imagine that there aren't "Christian games" in the same vein. LOTR features war, Orcs and magic, but forgiveness and mercy as themes and turning points are pretty damned clear in the books if you actually read them. Shin Megami Tensei and DOOM (heh heh heh) might not quite hold up in the same way, but there must be narrative-based games that have a similar core message.

I'm not saying you necessarily disagree with me here, it's just a question that comes to mind when reading this thread.
