i've never been interested in Pokemon, but i see it plays such a big part in the internet, so i'm curious what it's about, who it's about, and why people like it. how do the games differ from other installments? thank you.
I loved Pokemon since pokemon Red. And I've watched the Anime and played with the cards a little.
(the game) is about you becoming a Pokemon Trainer. you can catch pokemon in the wild And raise and train your Pokemon to be the best in the region (that your in and differs per game) then you go around battling other trainers.
but also Pokemon games are about exploration, that's one aspect I love about it.
I also love it because you can train and catch what ever Pokemon you want, how ever you want and play at your own pace.

...but if you want another answer i think what makes alot of people playing the games is all the Pokemon you can catch. What makes people continue to play can vary though. Some might stay because they like collecting Pokemon and other might stay because they enjoy playing competetive.
I've never known what the big deal is. Only thing I've been able to figure out is that it draws the kiddies faster than an unmarked fan with free candy.

how do the games differ with each new game? how are the new black and white games different from the old ones? is there any story other than "collect as many pokemon as possible"?

*sigh..... one question to answer your question, have you played any Pokemon game?
If you answered no, then go play it to find out.
If you answered yes, then my explanation is that is an RPG in which you train your own team from scratch by catching them, giving you the satisfaction that you caught something that you wanted, then bonding with it, raising it, evolving it giving it strong moves and use it to defeat your opponents.
Everyone has different tastes so you rarely see the exact same team with the same moves and strategy in another player's team.
Then go beat the Champ, then choose to capture them all or play online against other players where it's obvious that it's much much harder but competitive and fun.
Now even with all that, you still don't undertand, and still dislike it, I suggest you respect the opinions of those who like it and go play whatever you want. No one will hate you for not liking Pokemon. So don't hate those who do. It's just a game.
In all honesty, I love Pokemon but I prefer Shin Megami Tensei games a whole lot more. It's harder, awesome story and the human player fights as well. Plus you defeat Gods and Demons, there's no toping that!
Cheers.

@OSP Black and white and their sequels are heavily reliant on story, so that's what you want for a good story. But if you wish to experience pokemon bliss, go gen 3. :3

@Happy_Mask really,Gen 3? I loved Emerald, no hate, the best Pokemon game on GBA. But the perfect Pokemon game In my opinion was Gen 2. Cause you had the day/night clock thing going on, You could visit Kanto, red Gyarados, and you fight RED. Introduction to breeding, tons of legendaries,
Gen 3 was awesome in it's own right but Gen 2 was the peak of Pokemon games.
